pargana (plural parganas)

  1. (British India) An administrative unit of British Raj, consisting of a number of villages. [from 17th c.] Since Indian independence, replaced by the block or tahsil.

      ‘I shall advise His Highness to sanction at least a high school in the capital, and if possible another in each pargana.’
    • 2017 April 20, Times of India:
