From Pre-Lithuanian *dēvas, from Proto-Baltic *deiṷas, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *deiwás (compare Latvian dievs, Old Prussian Deiwas), from Proto-Indo-European *deywós. Cognate to Latin deus and Sanskrit देव (devá).
