Etymology 1

ભાત (bhāt, “rice”)

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀪𑀢𑁆𑀢 (bhatta) with semantic shift, as rice was distributed among close ones, from Sanskrit भक्त (bhaktá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰaktás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂g-tó-s, from the root *bʰeh₂g- (“to divide, distribute”). The food sense is a semantic loan from Pali bhatta (“food, meal”). Doublet of ભક્ત (bhakt) and બખત (bakhat). Cognate with Assamese ভাত (bhat), Bengali ভাত (bhat), Dhivehi ބަތް (bat̊), Hindi भात (bhāt), Marathi भात (bhāt), Sinhalese බත (bata), and Sindhi ڀاتِ (bhāti).
