[edit]First attested as appoldro in 790-793. Derived either from Old Dutch apuldra- (“apple tree”) or apuldron, or from a dative plural version of Proto-Germanic *apuldra- (“apple trees”). Compare Aperloo, Appeltern, Ter Apel, Apuldram, Apeldorn and Appeldorn.
