Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mjal (face); cognate with Mizo hmêl (face), Jingpho man (face). (OC *menʔ, “to turn; to violate”) is probably cognate (Wang, 1982), perhaps its endoactive (Schuessler, 2007).
