From Old Norse hjarni (the brain), whence the Old Norse hjarnamænir (the skull) from Proto-Germanic *hirzniją, *hirsniz (brain), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂s- (head). Cognate with Old High German hirni (brain), Swedish hjärna (brain), Latin cerebrum (brain, skull), Ancient Greek κάρα (kára, head), and Old English hærn (brain) (whence English harns).
