Etymology
From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch (deprecated template usage) ruuch, (deprecated template usage) ru, (deprecated template usage) rou, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Dutch Template:term/t, Template:term/t, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic Template:term/t. The original stem ended in -h-, which disappeared between vowels, giving Template:term/t in the inflected forms in Old Dutch. This then gave rise to an alternative uninflected form Template:term/t, which developed into Middle Dutch (deprecated template usage) ru, (deprecated template usage) rou, modern Dutch (deprecated template usage) ruw, (deprecated template usage) rouw. The original uninflected form was back-formed to (deprecated template usage) ruig based on other words with -ch in the uninflected form and -g- in inflected forms, similar to what happened to (deprecated template usage) hoog.
