First attested in the early second century CE, of {{unc|la|nocap=1}} provenance: It is no doubt a borrowing, but it could be from {{bor|la|gmw-pro|*burg}}, {{bor|la|grc|πύργος}}, or rather a lost Balkan cognate: it is a word that travelled far, even to earliest {{cog|ar|-}} as {{m|ar|بُرْج}}. The [[:en:wikipedia:Teutoburg Forest|forest of Teutoburg]] appears mentioned as early as Tacitus ([[:s:la:Ab excessu divi Augusti (Annales)/Liber I#LX|''Annales'', I, 60]]: “Teutoburgiensis saltus”), who describes the events that occurred more than half a century earlier (9 CE).
