From {{inh|lv|bat-pro|*žō}} (with an extra formative ''a-'': {{m|ine-bsl-pro|*a-źō}} > {{m|ine-bsl-pro|*ažuo}} > {{m|ine-bsl-pro|*ažu}}), from {{inh|lv|ine-pro|*ǵʰō||behind, under, out of, because of}}, itself perhaps a pronominal instrumental form from the {{m|ine-pro|*gʰe}}, {{m|ine-pro|*gʰo}}, a stem found in several particles, like {{cog|lv|nedz||neither, nor}} < {{m|lv|*ne-gi}}. In
[[w:Latvian language|Latvian]], the final vowel was lost, yielding {{m|lv|az}}, still dialectally attested, and also in some place names (Azpurve) and as a prefix in some words in the literary language ({{m|lv|azaids||meal}}, {{m|lv|azote||bosom}}). Some dialects have a longer, and more recent, form {{m|lv|āz}}. The standard form, {{m|lv|aiz}}, has an unexpected ''i'', possibly the result of convergence between {{m|lv|az}} and {{m|lv|iz||from}}.
