In oracle bone script, it was likely a {{liushu|psc|nocap=yes}}: semantic {{zh-l|*凡}} + phonetic inverted {{och-l|由}}. It's also possible that the phonetic component is instead an ancient form of {{och-l|鏃}}. In bronze inscriptions, {{zh-l|*凡}} corrupted into {{zh-l|*舟}}, and the bottom-right subcomponent gradually corrupted into two lines (now written {{zh-l|*刂}}). The upper-right subcomponent ({{zh-l|*亼}}) moved to the top of the character in bamboo slips, and {{zh-l|*舟}} was further corrupted into {{zh-l|*月}}, arriving at the modern form.
