Why can't I edit some particular pages?

Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them. If this is not the case, you may have been blocked or your IP address caught up in a range block.

How do I create an article?

See how to create your first article, then use the Article Wizard to create one, and add references to the article as explained below.

How do I create citations?

Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like <ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>, copy the whole thing).
In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:

Thank you for your contributions: it's great to see work getting done about our coverage of the languages of Himachal. Just a few notes though. Here you changed the text from At the time of the 2011 census, census, 44% of the population in the district declared Kullui as their first language, 23% opted for Pahari, 10% chose Seraji,^[a] to At the time of the 2011 census, census, 54% of the population in the district declared Kullui as their first language, 23% opted for Pahari. After your change, the sentence was factually wrong: it is not the case that 54% said they spoke Kullui. Only 44% did, you've just added the 10% who said they spoke Serazi. Given that Serazi is a Kullui dialect, there are situations where it makes sense to add up the two numbers, but we can't do that when reporting the primary census data. Maybe you can have a look at WP:OR and espeically WP:SYNTH for some of the reasoning at work here?

Similar siutaitons arise in other articles, so it pays to be careful. I wish the articles could say "N% of the district's population speak the X language", but for Himachal we can't really do that: when asked during the census, speakers of one and the same language variety may identify it variously as either the specific dialect (like Serazi), the language (Kullui), a bigger regional group (Pahadi), or occasionally something even broader (like Hindi). So in most cases, the only option is report those various identifications from the census and make sure we're explicit that we're simply reporting the census data. – Uanfala (talk) 12:38, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics
