Ryan Peter Skinner (born 13 March 1970) is a English football manager currently in charge of Second League side Pinhalnovense, after taking over the then National Championship - H third division, now second division, side in November 2020.
Pinhalnovense is Skinner's third job in management. He managed Northern Irish side Larne between July 2013 and July 2016, and again between May 2017 and May 2020. In between spells at Larne, he also managed English non-league side Dover Athletic between December 2016 and May 2017.
During his time at Larne, Skinner won three honours: One Irish Intermediate Cup (2014), One Steel & Sons Cup (2017) and promotion from NIFL Championship 1 into Northern Ireland's top flight NIFL Premiership (2015). However, Skinner has also suffered relegation in his career. He and Dover Athletic were relegated from the English Conference Premier in May 2017, Skinner resigned soon after to rejoin former club Larne. He left Larne again in 2020 after a poor league campaign, six months later he joined National Championship - H side Pinhalnovense on a two-year contract.
Managerial career

[edit]Skinner took control of his first managerial appointment on 1 July 2013, joining NIFL Championship 1 side Larne on a one-year contract following a successful job interview a day previous. He made his club and managerial debut on 10 August 2013, in a 4-0 home win against Coagh United. Skinner drew his first East Antrim derby meeting with Ballyclare Comrades on 9 November 2013. Although Skinner lost Larne's main derby 2-1 to Carrick Rangers at Taylors Avenue in December 2013. On 19 April 2014, Skinner won his first trophy as a manager by beating non-league side Dunmurry Recreation at Seaview in the final to win the Irish Intermediate Cup. Eight days later, Skinner signed a new one-year contract extension, keeping him at Inver Park until June 2015.
Skinner began his second season in charge of Larne in style, winning all five of his opening five league fixtures. Due to his start to the season his was named the NIFL Championship 1 Manager of the Month for September. Larne were top of the table for the opening eleven league fixtures, during the following five fixtures they were knocked off top spot but stayed around the top three in that time and returned top on 10 February 2015 after beating first place Harland & Wolff Welders 2-1 at Inver Park.
Skinner and Larne stayed top for another five fixtures but were again knocked off the top four games from the end of the season following heavy defeats to Bangor and Dergview, defeats which allowed Harland & Wolff Welders to go on and win the NIFL Championship 1 title. Nevertheless Larne made it into the NIFL Championship 1 Promotion Play-Off in second place thanks to a final day win over third place Dundela. They faced rivals Carrick Rangers in the final. Larne went onto win the play-off 5-1 on aggregate and therefore gained promotion to the NIFL Premiership, Skinner's first promotion of his career.
One month previous, Skinner signed a new one-year contract with the club, keeping him with them until June 2016 at least. In May 2015, he won his second NIFL Championship 1 Manager of the Month award, this time for April.
On 8 August 2015, Skinner made his NIFL Premiership managerial debut in a 2-0 loss away at Glentoran. His first top flight victory came three days later in a 2-0 home win over Crusaders. On 29 September 2015, Skinner and Larne beat fifty-one times Premiership champions Linfield 3-2 at Inver Park. On 13 November 2015, Scottish League Two side Airdrieonians approached Skinner to become the clubs new manager, but Skinner rejected the chance to attend an interview with the Airdrie club. Just over three weeks later on 3 December, fellow NIFL Premiership side Harland & Wolff Welders also approached Skinner to become their new manager, this time Skinner agreed to attend an interview with the club but eventually was overlooked for the vacancy in favour of Eddie Patterson.
On 5 April 2016, after a 2-3 away win at Ballinamallard United that secured Larne's NIFL Premiership status, Skinner announced he would leave at the end of his current contract. He did so on 1 July 2016, sighting a change of scenery as his main reason for leaving. In his final season in charge Larne finished 10th in the Premiership, a place and twelve points above the Relegation play-off spot and thirteen points above last place. In total, he was in charge of 116 Larne matches, winning 50, drawing 20 and losing 46, while also winning the 2013-14 Irish Intermediate Cup and gaining promotion from NIFL Championship 1 to NIFL Premiership in 2015. He won the NIFL Championship 1 Manager of the Month on two occasions.
Dover Athletic
[edit]After applying for numerous managerial roles, and after six months of searching after leaving Larne, Skinner agreed to join Conference Premier side Dover Athletic on a contract until the end of the season with the club sitting in the relegation places of the Conference Premier table. Skinner won his first match in charge of Dover, beating Salisbury City 2-1 on 3 December 2016 at Crabble Athletic Ground. Although, after picking up just three wins in his next eighteen matches, Dover sat in twenty-first place with six league matches left. On the final day of the 2016/17 season, relegation was confirmed despite Skinner and Dover losing just one and winning four of their final six matches. Dover finished twenty-first, two points from safety and off Hayes & Yeading United. Skinner resigned from his role at Dover on 19 May 2017 and subsequently rejoined former club Larne.
Larne
[edit]After resigning from his role at Dover Athletic on 19 May 2017, Skinner rejoined former club Larne on a two-year contract four days later. Since leaving Larne in July 2016, the club were relegated from NIFL Premiership back into NIFL Championship 1. His first match back in charge of the side was against Bangor on 12 August 2017, a match which ended 0-0 at Clandeboye Park. His first win back at the Northern Irish club came just under two weeks later, a 3-0 home win over non-league side Seapatrick in the Steel & Sons Cup Second Round.
In December 2017, Skinner and Larne done exception in the Cup competitions. Firstly, reaching the semi-finals of the Northern Irish League Cup, although suffered a defeat on penalties to reigning NIFL Premiership champions Portadown despite taking keeping them quiet throughout normal time and extra time. Better luck was to come six days later when the club reached the Steel & Sons Cup final, which was played on Christmas Day 2017; which is a tradition. Larne faced non-league side Cookstown Olympic in the final, a match they comfortably won 3-1 in front of 938 supporters at Seaview. The triumph was Skinner's third major honour at the club.
Despite the Cup success, it was a disappointing first season back with Larne for Skinner. The board's expectation was to win the NIFL Championship 1, but the team finished in a unsatisfactory fifth place; nineteen points off first place Ballymena United. Throughout the summer of 2018, Skinner's job was continuously under the spotlight. However, chairman Paul Anderson decided to keep hold of Skinner for the 2018/2019 campaign.
In the 2018/2019 season more disappointment was to come in the league. Despite being inside the top two from matchday nine to matchday eighteen, the team collapsed in the final eight matches to finish in a respectable, yet discouraging, fourth place. The Cups also offered no joy for Skinner's men, being knocked out in the opening two rounds of all but one of the five competitions they participated in. The only Cup run was in the Steel & Sons Cup, incidentally which they won the previous season. They made it to the semi-final stage before losing 4-2 after extra time to fellow NIFL Championship 1 side Donegal Celtic at The Oval.
In spite of another substandard season, Larne chairman Paul Anderson awarded Skinner with a new two-year contract at the club. However Skinner resigned one-year into his new contract, this was due to another poor season in the league. Larne and Skinner finished just one place and one point above the relegation zone, even with a 1-0 away defeat on the final day of the season against Wakehurst. Only staying up due to Queen's University Belfast drawing 2-2 on the same day with Institute.
Seven day previous to the final day drama, Skinner still managed to guide the club to another Cup final. On this occasion it was in the Irish Intermediate Cup, but there was to be no jubilation in the trophy he and Larne won in 2014 as they lost 8-9 on penalties to Wakehurst; which came after a thrilling 5-5 draw after extra time.
Skinner resigned on 14 May 2020.
Pinhalnovense
[edit]A full six months later, after months and months of applying for jobs, Skinner finally received an approach from Portuguese National Championship - H side Pinhalnovense on 3 November 2020. He attended the job interview with chairman Duarte Teixeira and was offered a two-year contract two days later on 5 November. Skinner accepted the contract offer and officially took charge on the same day.
His first match in charge of the Portuguese club came three days later on 8 November 2020 against Louletano at Estádio Algarve, they won the match 1-3 thanks to a goal from Pedro Silva and a brace from Ronaldo Monteiro. In his next fourteen matches in charge, Pinhalnovense only suffered defeat four times in that spell, winning six and drawing four. Skinner managed to finish the club third in the First Stage of the league campaign, four points and one place off entering the Promotion Stage. As a result of the format in National Championship - H, clubs placed from third to tenth dropped into the Relegation Stage.
In the Relegation Stage, Skinner and Pinhalnovense continued their fine form together. After playing the fourteen matches left of the season, the club finished third in the Relegation Stage table. Winning six, drawing five and losing just three. On 14 April 2021, Pinhalnovense were at the point of a board takeover. Then chairman Duarte Teixeira agreed a deal with local businessman Nuno Pinheiro to take over the Portuguese club, the new chairman assured Skinner his job was completely safe and even made extra transfer funds available for Skinner.
In his first full season in charge Skinner and Pinhalnovense continued to flourish, Skinner guided them to First Stage success by finishing top of the table with an impressive forty-one points, which was seven points ahead of second place Porto B. Therefore the club qualified for the Promotion Stage, however they failed to continue that form into the next stage. Pinhalnovense finished third from bottom in sixth, nine points off a promotion play-off place and twenty-three points off promotion itself.
On 1 April 2022, Skinner signed a new one-year contract at Pinhalnovense, keeping him at the Campo de Jogos Santos Jorge until June 2023 at least. In his second full season at the club, they missed out on the Promotion Stage after finishing in fourth position and subsequently dropped into the Relegation Stage. In the aforementioned Relegation Stage, Skinner and Pinhalnovense eased through it. Finishing in first place, eleven points ahead of their closest challengers Grijó in second. During the Relegation Stage, uncertainty over Skinner's position at the club came about. At the beginning of the second stage it was reported he could be sacked with a bad opening result against Lus. Vildemoinhos, but after a 2-3 win at the Campo dos Trambelos his position was not questioned again.
On 27 February 2023, Scottish League Two side Clachnacuddin approached Skinner to make him their new manager, Skinner asked to delay his decision until the end of the National Championship - H season, however on 1 April 2023 Skinner signed a new one-year contract at Pinhalnovense and therefore ending talks with Clachnacuddin. Also, in April 2023 Skinner was awarded with the Portuguese National Championship Manager of the Month award for April.
In the 2023-2024 season, Skinner guided Pinhalnovense into the Promotion Stage for the second time in three seasons after finishing in second place in the First Stage on goal difference ahead of Louletano, who incidentally they faced on the final day of the season to guarantee Promotion Stage qualification. In the Promotion Stage Pinhalnovense finished a respectable fourth, but nine points off the play-off spot and fourteen points off automatic promotion.
On 22 May 2024, Skinner signed a new two-year contract at Pinhalnovense, keeping him at the club until June 2026 at least. In the first season of that new contract, Skinner and Pinhalnovense done the unthinkable. Skinner guided the Portuguese club to National Championship - H promotion success by winning the Promotion Stage by one point and therefore earning promotion into the Second League for the following season.
This was after Pinhalnovense had finished second in the First Stage and advanced to the Promotion Stage in which Pinhalnovense topped their group after being in first place for all but one of the fourteen matchdays. In the end, they only just snatched automatic promotion away from Tourizense by one single point. The 2025-2026 season will be the club's first ever season in Portugal's second tier.
In the midst of all the promotion celebrating, Pinhalnovense broke a club match winning record after Pinhalnovense beat Maria da Fonte 9-1 at the Campo de Jogos Santos Jorge with the previous record being set in 2023-2024 with a 6-0 win away to AD Nogueirense.

Honours

[edit]Skinner has currently won five career trophies, his first honour was the Irish Intermediate Cup in 2014 with Larne; which was won in his first season in charge of the Northern Irish club. His first individual honour to his name came in September 2014, picking up the NIFL Championship 1 Manager of the Month award for that month. He won promotion from NIFL Championship 1 into Northern Ireland's top flight NIFL Premiership with Larne in 2015. Two years he won the Northern Irish Steel & Sons Cup with Larne in the 2017/2018 season. During that time also picking up the NIFL Championship 1: Manager of the Month twice more.
His first honour with Pinhalnovense was the National Championship - H: First Stage title in his first season with the club, he has also won the April 2023 Portuguese National Championship: Manager of the Month award for the Portuguese club. Skinner guided Pinhalnovense to promotion in 2025, winning the Portuguese National Championship - H: Promotion Stage by one point.

Ryan Peter Skinner (born 13 March) is an English footballer who plays as a striker for Crewe Alexandra, on loan from Queens Park Rangers, in the English League Two.
Skinner started his career at English club Queens Park Rangers, having signed for them in July 2013. His first squad number allocated was the number 41 shirt, chosen by himself whilst at QPR.
Club career
[edit]Queens Park Rangers
[edit]After having trials with numerous clubs, his first professional club was confirmed on 1 July 2013. That club would be Queens Park Rangers, then manager Harry Redknapp gave Skinner the chance to impress at Loftus Road.
2013–14 season
[edit]Seventeen days after joining Queens Park Rangers, manager Harry Redknapp confirmed that his intentions were to send Skinner out on loan to continue his growth and development. Three days later an offer came in from League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge for a season-long loan. While Skinner was away, QPR finished top of the English Championship and therefore won promotion back to the Premier League, winning the league with ninety-nine points. Skinner returned to Loftus Road on 30 June 2014.
Dagenham & Redbridge loan
[edit]On 20 July 2013, Skinner joined League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge on a season-long loan deal, manager Wayne Burnett allocated him the number 13 shirt. He made his club debut on 28 July 2013 against Lokomotiv Moscow in a pre-season friendly at Victoria Road, he played 89 minutes in a 0-0 draw. Skinner scored and got injured in Dagenham's third pre-season friendly, playing 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Viking. It was announced after the game that Skinner had pulled his hamstring and would be out of action for three weeks, meaning he'd miss the opening match of the season against Hartlepool United.
Skinner missed Dagenham's opening four domestic fixtures, in which the club failed to gain a point and were knocked out of the League Cup. Skinner made his competitive debut for Dagenham against Accrington Stanley on 24 August 2013 in the league, a game in which he scored his first professional goal and won the man of the match award in a 1-1 draw; Accrington's first league point of the season. On 27 August 2013, Skinner was included in the team of the week due to his performances at the Crown Ground. However, in his second match back on 31 August 2013 Skinner picked up another injury, this time much serious. It was announced after a 0-0 draw with Northampton Town that Skinner had torn his hamstring, meaning he'd be on the sidelines for three months.
Skinner returned to action on 5 November 2013 against AFC Wimbledon, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0-1 victory which was Dagenham's first win of the season after sixteen attempts. The club followed that victory with a 0-2 away win at Cheltenham Town, with Skinner assisting Billy Bingham's opener. Skinner scored his second Dagenham goal on his FA Cup debut away to Sheffield United on 7 December 2013, equalising to earn a replay which Dagenham won 1-0 at Victoria Road. Skinner received his first red card of his career on 15 February 2014, receiving two yellow cards in the space of five minutes against Oxford United.
On 4 March 2014, Skinner scored a brace in Dagenham's 2-0 win over Burton Albion, whilst also picking up his second man of the match award. He followed that with a goal and an assist on 11 March 2014 against Cheltenham Town, who incidentally were the recipients when Skinner got his first career assist earlier in the season, in a 2-0 victory. He continued his fine goal-scoring form by grabbing another goal this time against Wycombe Wanderers on 18 March 2014, scoring a first half penalty in a 1-1 draw.
In April 2014, Skinner achieved another goal and assist combination against Bristol Rovers in a 2-0 win on 12 April, he followed that by scoring his first career hat-trick against Wycombe Wanderers on 19 April in a 4-0 success where he also collected his fifth assist of the campaign. He picked up an additional assist in his next match, a 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on 26 April thanks to a Zavon Hines hat-trick. On his final appearance for Dagenham, Skinner grabbed his eleventh league goal of the season to earn the club a 0-1 victory away at Mansfield Town on the final day of the 2013/14 season.
Dagenham ended the season in thirteenth place, twenty-four points off the League Two play-off spots. Skinner himself finished seventeenth in the League Two goal-scoring charts with eleven goals and thirteenth in the assists chart with six. In his time at Dagenham he also achieved six man of the match awards and was included in team of the week on four occasions, he was yellow carded four times while receiving one red card during his time at Victoria Road. He returned to QPR on 30 June 2014.
2014–15 season
[edit]Manager Harry Redknapp confirmed on 1 July 2014 that his intentions were to loan Skinner out once more to continue his development. On 3 July, Skinner received an offer from League One side Shrewsbury Town but he rejected the opportunity to join the Shropshire club on 16 July. Instead, he chose to join recently relegated League Two side Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan deal.
Crewe Alexandra loan
[edit]On 16 July 2014, Skinner joined League Two side Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan, manager Steve Davis allocated him the number 28 shirt. He made his unofficial debut for Crewe in a pre-season friendly on 27 July 2014, playing the full ninety minutes in a 0-0 draw with Sturm Graz. Skinner scored twice and picked up the man of the match in Crewe's second pre-season friendly against Union Berlin on 31 July 2014, the club won the match 0-2 at Stadion An der Alten Försterei. He scored again in the clubs final pre-season friendly, scoring a 38th-minute goal in a 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld at Alexandra Stadium.
Skinner made his official Crewe Alexandra debut on 9 August 2014, in a 0-0 draw with Northampton Town. He followed up with two assists in consecutive matches, in a 1-0 home victory against Southend United and a 0-2 away win at Accrington Stanley. After failing to score a single goal during August and September, manager Steve Davis left Skinner out of the matchday squads in the following five fixtures, including a meeting with his former club Dagenham & Redbridge.
He made his return on 25 October 2014, picking up an assist in a 1-0 home win to Bristol Rovers.
