Please add a subcategory to point to Care Guides

[edit]

Please add the switch "CG" to point to care guides/notes. An example of one needed is http://www.drugs.com/cg/oral-polio-vaccine.html; no other information is available on drugs.com for the oral version of this vaccine. Changes, 7 June 2016

[edit]

I have added these changes, after sandbox-testing:

  1. Show the external link symbol (ie, do not suppress it)
  2. Default accept parameter 2=blank to 2=parent
  3. Add css-title showing target site (mousehover effect)
  4. Accept lc/uc input
  5. Link to httpS: not http:
  6. Change "parent" text shown into drug name as entered
  7. Categorise all articles with input not "parent, monograph" into tracking cat Category:Drugs.com link with non-standard subpage

Tracking category

[edit]

@DePiep, Anypodetos, Boghog, Doc James, Globernnr, AGK, Frietjes, and Vagobot:

  • Template transclusion count reports 3218 transclusion(s) found.
  • Category:Template:drugs.com link with non-standard subpage reports approximately 2,599 total.
  • If I understand correctly, that means that over 80% of all uses of this template on English Wikipedia are considered erroneous.
  • Template documentation includes a table of 17 example uses.
    • The first example use, actually two ways of omitting the webpage type, do not trigger the tracking category.
    • The other 16 example uses all trigger the tracking category.
  • If this is an error, it should be fixed.
  • If this is how it's supposed to work, it should be explained better in the template documentation and in the category documentation.

A just did some spot checks. A few of the category members appear to be genuine errors which I have corrected (diff, diff, diff). But most seem OK. Are there errors in the script that generates this category? I agree that the documentation of this category needs to be improved to make clear what this category contains and how to fix the errors. Even the name of the category is opaque. Boghog (talk) 06:01, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
re Boghog: these 3 errors are in article input, not for the template to correct. As I wrote below, I do not see errors as described in OP. -DePiep (talk) 06:18, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Monthly data as of 2020-06-01
Template: Drugs.com
Page count: 2640
Transclusion count: 2788
These are in mainspace. I've experienced no issues with this counting before.
re the countings you mention, I don't know their working details. Anyway, I would not call usage on non-mainspace "considered erroneous". I just ignore them.
Then, Category:Template:drugs.com link with non-standard subpage (0). As the name says, these are the "non-standard subpage" ones only: a subpage code is entered (parameter 2). When input is default (omitted), the 'parent' page (for that drug) in the drugs.com site is linked to, and no categorisation takes place. There is no error in there. I'll add this to the documentation. -DePiep (talk) 06:13, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) OK, reading the section directly above (Changes, 7 June 2016):
  • Categorise all articles with input not "parent, monograph" into tracking cat
These are not non-standard subpages. These are standard subpages. The problem is with the misleading name of this category. Boghog (talk) 06:16, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No. Sure, if you change the content, then the name is incorrect. There is no need or request to change this (and I oppose it; OP stems from misunderstanding not from noting an error). -DePiep (talk) 06:20, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sidenote: since categories started doing numerical sorting (into "0-9"), I will prepare & propose a new sorting-code (letter) set. -DePiep (talk) 06:32, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Merely stating that is the category name is correct does not make it correct. Why is it correct? You need to justify the name. When you include "non-standard" in the name of the tracking category, it implies that there is something wrong in the members of the category that needs to be fixed. The OP thought so and I thought so. I created the {{drugs.com}} template. If the creator of the template does not understand the meaning of the tracking category associated with the template, that clearly means there is something wrong with the name of the tracking category. I propose that
be moved to something like
This makes it immediately clear that there is nothing wrong with the members of the category and nothing needs to be fixed. Boghog (talk) 10:03, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, what is the purpose of Category:Template:drugs.com link with non-standard subpage? More useful is to track invalid section codes (i.e., codes not currently allowed by {{drugs.com}}). These are errors that should be fixed. As noted above, I found a few myself that I just fixed. Boghog (talk) 10:03, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, Boghog (esp re 'non-std subpages' ;-) ).
I will prepare & propose a wider improvement here (cat name, population, ...). -DePiep (talk) 21:35, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New setup

[edit]

To redesign this category, some questions/ideas:

  • Keep? Yes IMO, this tracking cat serves a function giving an overview + checkoption for all articles that use {{Drugs.com}}.
  • Scope? Scope-A: List all articles that have {{Drugs.com}}. So includes those outside of {{Infobox drug}} (as is today). No problem with me.
Scope-B: also, start including the "parent page" articles ({{Drugs.com|parent|lisinopril}}, {{Drugs.com||lisinopril}})?
  • Error checks: As Boghog noted above: [1]. These errors (with page code/ prefix) can be detected atomatically, and cat-sorted separately (under different letter). That is: in the same category, or a subcategory. Other errors tha can be detected?
  • Category sorting by letters (catsort): Prevent 0–9 sort codes; add Parent-page to index.
  • Documentation: more clear, follow changes.
  • No Wikidata link: drugs.com (Q5308945) is not available as a Property, so no WD connection exists.
  • Category name: Follow changes; change to: Category:Articles having Drugs.com, Category:Articles linking to drugs.com? Can be simple. No need to mention {{Indobox drug}} in cat name.

I don't care if the category exists or not, and if it exists I don't care what it tracks. All I care about is that if it is a category of non-problematic uses, its name should not in any way imply there is a problem. I believe most templates do not have their own personal, or should I say templatorial, category, and I don't know why this one should, but if there are good reasons so be it. —Anomalocaris (talk) 07:00, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Template:drugs.com_link_with_non-standard_subpage has been nominated for possible deletion, merging, or renaming. A discussion is taking place to decide whether this proposal complies with the categorization guidelines. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at the category's entry on the categories for discussion page. Thank you. -DePiep (talk) 16:34, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
