Removed Statement re county number

[edit]

I'm not sure how prior to 2008 La Porte county was the 45th county alphabetically in Indiana. If you're counting the space in the word, then presumably La Porte would have to be number 44, as Lagrange county (typically never having had a space) would be 45 and Lake 46. In any case, it was a confusing, unsourced, fairly irrelevant statement which I think may have been connected somehow to the county numbers that used to appear on license plates, hence the 2008 reference. These numbers still exist on license plates (although smaller and hard to read) and Indiana judiciary uses the county number system when assigning case numbers for courts eg. La Porte circuit = 46C01 etc. So if La Porte was and continues to be #46, I don't see the need to confuse. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.167.110.28 (talkcontribs) 21:41, 13 September 2009

Name

[edit]

What is the consensus with the name? People keep revising it from 'La Porte' to 'LaPorte' and vice versa. I think both are acceptable, but should there be some consistency? I understand that 'Laporte' is not acceptable, however as an interesting note, many early people in the county used this spelling. If you review the first commissioners record dated from 1836 (located in the circuit courthouse), they frequently use 'Laporte'. Personally my vote would be for 'La Porte'. If you break down the word in an etymological sense, then in French the phrase is two distinct words. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.167.110.28 (talkcontribs) 21:41, 13 September 2009

LaPorte County, IndianaLa Porte County, Indiana – The sources I am seeing such as here spell it La Porte. That's also how the city article spells the name. Relisted Armbrust The Homunculus 14:04, 12 January 2014 (UTC) Candleabracadabra (talk) 17:07, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, although the county website you site lookd like a cheap contract job and the other two sources don't look much more definitive. Several other reliable sources spell it with a space, including Google Maps. I guess it's not even a problem limited to this community see here for example. I do think it's amusing that the city is spelled one way and the county another. The arguments and sources for La Porte seem more convincing to me, but unless others agree I suppose it can remain as is. Candleabracadabra (talk) 22:49, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adjacent Counties

[edit]

Material has been added three times by IP(s), reverted three times by two different editors, that Cook county, Illinois is adjacent to La Porte County. This is fundamentally untrue. In one of the edit summaries adding the material, the editor said that:

Cook county, Illinois can be viewed from Lake Michigan in Michigan city. You can see on the berrien county Page that is says the same thing

In the original reversion I made, I pointed out that:

Cook county is not an adjacent county. The reason Cook county is adjacent to Berrien county is that they share a water boundary on Lake Michigan. La Porte county does not share a water boundary with Illinois

I would ask the editor(s) to please consider the above explanation as to why the material is being removed, and please join the discussion here before adding the material again. RandomGnome (talk) 02:18, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
