Cleanup and expansion

[edit]

This page is a modified copy of the Cambridge Blues page that generalises the information to cover Oxford University and other places that award Blues. The Cambridge Blues page is unaltered but I would hope that people interested in that page might care to change it to a redirection to this more general page.Bduke 03:02, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That has been done. Thanks.Bduke 00:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a separate page on Cambridge & Oxford blues. At the moment this "universal" page only talks about Cambridge & therefore it's doubly inappropriate. Why didn't you leave it as Cambridge Blue & instead wrote a seperate & new universal page~??

The page may need tidying up, but a lot of the information is in common between Oxford and Cambridge. Also material on Oxford (amd the Australian National University) has been added. Note that while I suggested redirecting the Cambridge page, I did not do it. I merely reported that it had been done above. I did not want to write about Oxford Blues separately, as I know nothing much about them. I just wanted a sensible link from an Oxford College page. Please try to modify the page to get the Oxford stuff correct. Bduke 22:49, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This page still suffers from the same problem as the old Cambridge Blue page in that it describes the system used for male athletes as if it covers both genders, without referencing the Women's Blues Committee or the Ospreys. It also mentions the Quarter Blue - this is not a "real" award, just something the Tiddlywinks club made up as a joke... Murleen 12:41, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the reference to Quarter Blues. The article does need more on female athletes and the Ospreys (and maybe a separate article on the Ospreys). Why don't you add stuff? Bduke 21:21, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging

[edit]

I have just found the page University Sports Blue which mentions university sporting awards in general but contains very little content. I propose merging it into this article, if any of it is not already included, as the subject matter is basically the same. Rmbyoung 21:23, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I had already added something about Blues at the Australian National University which are given somewhat along the lines of University Sports Blue. Bduke 21:28, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Likewise Oxford blue. Rmbyoung 23:41, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I wish people would search a bit more before creating new articles. They would often find it is already done. Bduke 06:16, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Note Oxford Blue redirects to University Sporting Blue. We are discussing Oxford blue. Bduke 06:20, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, Oxford blue is actually a colour, as opposed to Oxford Blue, an award, so maybe the page should just be edited to reflect that, with a link to University Sporting Blue at the top for people who type it in incorrectly. Rmbyoung 11:22, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Both pages have now been merged and redirected. Rmbyoung 15:49, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rename

[edit]

I propose renaming this page to University Sporting Colours as it is now covering more than the "Blue" universities.

I'll second that. Could one more knowledgeable than myself please include a piece on the Durham University 'Palatinate'?

As the person, who broadened it first from being just Cambridge, I agree. Moving it will leave this page as a redirect and also move this talk page, so use the move button. Please sign you comments here. --Bduke 22:18, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, there is specific interest in the Oxford and Cambridge sporting awards, over and above that of other universities. It is fair to say an Oxbridge Blue is world renowned. A page on university sporting awards pagemight reference this page and this page might reference it but I feel there is a clear distinction. This isn't just Oxbridge snobbery - I hold a Blue from Oxford and a Palatinate from Durham. ~Ash Rust 20:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have a point, but I have reverted for now to allow more debate on this. Certainly the information on London and Durham should be left until a general article on sporting awards is started when that material could be moved. If such an article was written then this article should be moved to Oxbridge Sporting Blue. --Bduke 22:11, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Ash Rust, don't just delete information. If you must, then set up separate pages for the other universities' awards.134.226.1.136 12:22, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My concern with leaving this information is that although it is of general interest, it's not concerned with Sporting Blue's; I left the information from other universities which do award blues. If there were no article on whiskey, you wouldn't put information on whiskey on the wine page until someone created a whiskey page. ~Ash Rust 23:46, 15 December 2006 (GMT)

Entitlements

[edit]

It would be useful if contributors could describe what the holders of each university's colours award are entitled to: a blue scarf, for example.213.202.133.136 16:22, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cambridge Blue HTML code

[edit]

The CUBC and CUWBC websites use a different HTML colour code than is used here - they have #A4D7BB whereas this page gives #96C8A2 Gingekerr 10:35, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is a blue?

[edit]

Is it a scarf, or a certificate, or a jacket, or a trophy, or some abstract thing which cannot be physically held?

It is an abstract thing, which gives you the right to wear the jacket, scarf etc. Gingekerr 15:39, 18 April 2007 (UTC) (Half-Blue in Lightweight Rowing 2007)[reply]

So, is this more or less the same thing as a "letter" in the US? Wschart (talk) 14:12, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
