Adentro is the tenth studio album released by singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona on December 6, 2005. Recorded in the United States and Mexico, the album was produced by Arjona himself, as well as Dan Warner and Lee Levin under their stage name Los Gringos, and Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Tommy Torres. The album marks the first collaboration between Arjona and the latter, who will later become a regular contributor in following albums by the singer.

Arjona proved new sounds in Adentro. On this album, Arjona included more Latin sounds, like some Mexican and Tejano music on "Mojado", a song about immigration; as well as some colombian and bachata elements on "Adiós Melancolía". Adentro was named "Arjona's most personal album", and his performance style was classified as "confident", with a "relevant-as-ever lyricism." It was named best Latin Pop Album for 2007 at the 49th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Commercially successful, Adentro became Arjona's fifth consecutive album to reach the top ten on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, peaking at No.3. On the Latin Pop Albums chart, it reached a peak of No.2. Adentro was certified two times Platinum in Mexico, five times Platinum in Argentina and two times Platinum (Latin) in the United States. As of february 2006, the album has sold more than one million copies worlwide.[1]

Five singles have been released from the album. American lead single, "Acompañame A Estar Solo", became Arjona's fifth number-one single on the US Billboard Latin Pop Songs chart, and reached No.7 on the Latin Songs chart. Mexican lead single "Mojado", featuring Mexican band Intocable, became a moderate success, as well as second American single "Pingüinos En La Cama", which single version features spanish singer Chenoa. "A Ti" followed as the fourth single, peaking at No.3 on the Latin Pop Songs chart. "De Vez En Mes" was released as the fifth and final single from the album. To promote the album, Arjona embarked on a world tour, which he titled the Adentro Tour.

Recording

This was the first time Arjona collaborated with Tommy Torres. On an interview, the singer commented that he first "tested" Torres by sending him the "hookiest and darkest tracks" on the album, "Acompañame A Estar Solo" and "Iluso".[2] Torres said that he "went all out on the first demo, hiring a full band that included a string orchestra", which grabbed the attention of Arjona.[2] Arjona further commented that Adentro was "a very representative and tremendously complete album," adding that "having different producers made it rich in possibilities."[2]

Fundacion Adentro

The Fundación Adentro is an organization founded bu Guatemalan singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona to help provide music and singing education to poor child in Guatemala.[9] Arjona commented that the main objetive of the organization "isn't becoming and important foudation internationally, but to help child reach their dreams."[9] The organization begun in 2005, prior to the release of Adentro, from which the foundation receives its name.[10] It was officially launched in July 2008, and its headquarters are located in Mexico City.[9]

Promotion and release

Singles

"Acompañame A Estar Solo" was released as the lead single off Adentro on October 2005. The song became his fifth No.1 hit on the US Billboard Latin Pop Songs chart,[11] reaching its peak on the week ending 7 January 2006, and staying at the top for three consecutive weeks. On the Latin Songs chart, it reached No.7, becoming his twelfth top 10 single on that chart.[12] "Pingüinos En La Cama" was released as the second single on January 2007. Spanish singer Chenoa is featured as a guest artist on the single version of the song. It became the first song by Arjona not to chart inside the top 25 of the Latin Songs chart when it peaked at No.44.[11] The song was more successful on the Latin Pop Songs chart, reaching No.19.[12]

"Mojado" was released as the lead single in Mexico due to its more regional style, while served as the third single on other music markets.[2] It is the first time Arjoan releases two lead singles from an album, as it was recommended by his label.[2] It peaked at No.34 on the Latin Songs chart,[11] and No.30 on the Latin Pop Songs chart.[12] "A Ti" was released as the fourth single of the album in March 2006. The song proved more success than its two predecessors, reaching No.14 on the Latin Songs chart,[11] and No.3 on the Latin Pop Songs chart.[12] "A Ti" was later included by Arjona on his compilation album Quién Dijo Ayer, as a duet with Italian singer Eros Ramazzoti. Arjona released "De Vez En Mes" as the fifth and final single from the album.

Tour

In 2006, Arjona started the first leg of his world tour, named the Adentro Tour, to promote his tenth studio album, Adentro. The tour resumed on 2007 for a second leg, in which he visited more countries. Approximately, two million people attended his concerts throughout his world tour.[13] The tour was officially closed on 14 September 2007 on the mainland city of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, during the International Fair, in front of more than 100,000 people.[13] On the United States, the tour had an attendance of 134,000 people, grossing $8.2 million.[14][15]

The album was critically acclaimed, with Evan C. Gutierrez from Allmusic giving it four starts out of five and commenting that "Be it for the stripped, natural production value, the confident performance of Ricardo Arjona, or his relevant-as-ever lyricism, he's got both his loyal fans and the execs at Norte smiling. While the instrumentation, performance, and overall sonic palette of this project are minimalist and unassuming, there is a depth and brilliance to them. The listener's ear does not tire or want for more, humble as Adentro is."[3] Billboard gave a positive review of the album, commenting that lyrically, it was "Arjona's most personal album", and that arrangements had "more rock elements", calling them "more cohesive" than past albums.[21] The review closed stating that "It is hard to be touching, relevant and musically compelling all at once, but Arjona pulls it off."[21]
