Thenature of the ground prevented the besiegers from usingmines or constructing covered ways {sdbdts). The siege,therefore, became little more than a blockade, and mereblockading operations directed against a fortress so amplysupplied with food, water, and munitions offered littleprospect of success within a reasonable time. Two divergentand irreconcilable accounts of the manner in which Akbarultimately attained his purpose are on record. The officialhistorians aver that the surrender of Asirgarh was due toan outbreak of deadly pestilence. The Jesuit version, basedon unpublished letters from Jerome Xavier, who was in attendance on Akbar, state that possession of the fortresswas gained by wholesale bribery of the officers of the garrison,and that earlier in the proceedings Miran Bahadur, the[king, was lured into Akbars camp and made prisoner byan act of sham
