Summary

Description
English: Thomas and Anne Shakeshaft swearing the Dunmow flitch oath in 1751. This was the final award of the oath for over a century; the custom was revived in 1855. In the centre, the Shakeshafts kneel on pointed stones to swear the oath; the background with its Corinthian columns is a product of the artist's imagination and does not depict Dunmow Priory.
