Summary

Description Rev. Bernard A. Maguire, SJ was born in Edgeworth, Ireland on February 11, 1818. The Maguire family moved to the United States in 1824 and settled in Frederick, Maryland. After receiving his early education at St. John's Literary Institute in Frederick, Maguire enrolled in Georgetown College (present-day Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.). He entered the Society of Jesus on September 20, 1837 and was ordained on September 27, 1850. Maguire began teaching at Georgetown and was made Prefect of Discipline. In August of 1852, he was appointed president of the College and served in that position until October 1858. Maguire was responsible for leading a building and renovation program that greatly expanded the College. In January of 1866, Maguire was once again appointed as College president. During his second tenure, Maguire assisted in founding the College's law school. He left Georgetown in July of 1870 to serve as a missionary. Maguire began working at St. Aloysius Church in Washington, D.C. and later moved to Boston, Massachusetts. On April 26, 1886 Maguire died at St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
