The flags of French Regions, Departments and territories are for the most part based on the coat of arms of the provinces of the Ancien Régime. Most of them bear no legal status, as territorial collectivities usually fly flags emblazoned with their logos.

Alsace Historical Rot un Wiss (« red and white »)
Based on the flag of Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen. Created in 1912, it was forbidden between the two world wars. It is widely used by regionalist and autonomist movements.
Based on the coat of arms of Upper-Alsace and Lower-Alsace.
Created in 1949, it is still sometimes used by official establishments, such as the Gendarmerie.
Current Based on the coat of arms of Upper-Alsace and Lower-Alsace.
It is the flag used by the Alsace Regional Council since 1990.
Departments Unofficial flag of Bas-Rhin. Based on the coat of arms of Lower-Alsace.
Unofficial flag of Haut-Rhin. Based on the coat of arms of Upper-Alsace.
Aquitaine Historical Based on the coat of arms of the Duchy of Aquitaine. It is not officially in use.
Department Unofficial flag of Dordogne.
Auvergne Historical Based on the coat of arms of the Duchy of Auvergne. It is not officially in use.

Historical Based on the coat of arms of the Dukes of Burgundy. It is not officially in use.

Historical Flag of the Duchy of Brittany.
Kroaz du (« black cross »).
Naval flag of the Duchy of Brittany.
Flag sometimes flown within the Duchy of Brittany.
Current Gwenn ha Du (« white and black »).
Created between 1923 and 1925, based on the flag of the United States. The white lines represent the regions of Lower Brittany (Léon, Trégor, Cornouaille, Vannetais), the black lines the regions of Upper Brittany (Rennais, Nantais, Dolois, Malouin, Penthièvre). It is widely in use.
