Ha*Ash (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈɟʝa ˈash]) is an American Latin pop duo[8][9] formed in 2002 by sisters Ashley Grace (born January 27, 1987) and Hanna Nicole (born June 25, 1985). The duo's name is a combination of their names.[10]

Combining a mixture of Latin pop, rock, country and singer-songwriter style, the duo is an international success.[3][4] Their hits include: "Lo Aprendí de Ti", "Perdón, Perdón", "Te Dejo en Libertad", "¿Qué Hago Yo?", "Ex de Verdad", "Sé Que Te Vas", "100 Años", and "Eso No Va a Suceder", among others. The duet released released six albums: Ha*Ash (2003), Mundos Opuestos (2005), Habitación Doble (2008), A Tiempo (2011), Primera Fila: Hecho Realidad (2014), and 30 de Febrero (2017).[11]

Life and career

Early life

Ashley Grace and Hanna Nicole were born in Lake Charles, Louisiana,[12] to American parents, Antonio and Mathilda Pérez. They have two siblings and two half-siblings.[13][14] Their grandfather is Mexican, and their grandmothers were of German and Spanish ancestry. The family had been living in Lake Charles for generations.[15] Because their father worked outside of the United States, they were raised half the year in Mexico City and half in Lake Charles.[14] Hanna and Ashley speak both English and Spanish.[8]

They began performing in church at the ages of 4 and 5 years respectively.[8][16] When they were 14 and 15, they sang in the music festivals "Railroad Festival" and "The Louisiana Music Cavalcade".[17] The duo's first co-written song was "Odio Amarte" (in English), which was featured on their debut album. Sony Music Latin released their first album "Ha*Ash" which was produced by Áureo Baqueiro.[18]

Although reticent concerning their private lives, they mentioned the divorce of their parents, who separated in early 2005, while the sisters were recording their second album,[19][20] "Sé Que Te Vas", released as a single for the album Primera Fila: Hecho Realidad in 2016, addressed this topic.[21][22]

2002-2004: Ha*Ash

They recorded their self-titled first album Ha*Ash with the Mexican producer Áureo Baqueiro in 2003.[23] It was officially released on May 11, 2003, under the label Sony Latin. The album peaked at #3 in the Mexican album charts and #19 in the US Billboard Latin Pop Albums.[24] In February 2003, received their first gold record for more than 75,000 copies in Mexico.[25] In March 2004, Ha*Ash received a platinum record for sales of 140,000 copies.[25] The album eventually was certified platinum and gold in México.[25][26]

In April 13, 2003 they released their first single, "Odio Amarte", which was a hit on Mexican radio stations, TV channels and festivals.[27] The second single was "Estés en Donde Estés" which was released in July 21, 2003.[28] The song was used as the main theme of the telenovela “Clap, el lugar de tus sueños” of Televisa, which provided wider dissemination of their music. It peaked at #9 on Billboard Latin Pop chart and #14 on Billboard Hot Latin Tracks.[29][30] In February 1, 2004, a third single was released: the ballad "Te Quedaste". It peaked at #17 on Billboard Latin Pop chart and #28 on Billboard Hot Latin Tracks.[29][30] The fourth single from their album debut was "Soy Mujer" which was used in the third version of Big Brother VIP Mexico.[31][32] In November 2005, a fifth single was released "Si Pruebas una Vez".[16]

After the success of their first album, a special edition of the album was released.[16] It features videos of their first three singles: "Odio Amarte", "Estés en Donde Estés" and "Te Quedaste"; behind the scenes of the videos, karaoke and an interview with Hanna and Ashley about the promotion of their album.

After this, they performed in the Teatro Metropolitan in Mexico City and prepared the release of "Mundos opuestos", their second album in Puerto Rico and USA.[26]

2005-2007: Mundos Opuestos

Their second album, Mundos Opuestos was also produced by Áureo Baqueiro.[33] It was published under the label Sony BMG on September 27, 2005. The album features a cover of the song from 1935 "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart". The album peaked at #8 in the Mexican album charts.[34] In 2005, the album was certified as gold in Mexico.[25] On August 24, 2006 the album was certified as platinum in Mexico.[25] The album eventually was certified platinum and gold in México.[25] "Amor a Medias" was the first single and reached number four on the Mexican Chart in April 2006.[35] The song was chosen to promote Sony's products. "Me Entrego a Ti" , the album's second single was released on November 27, 2005, and was written by Colombian artist Soraya. It, too, was successfull.[28][36][37] Both singles have videos that reached #1 on many television channels.[33]

The third single, "¿Qué Hago Yo?", was also written by Colombian artist Soraya.[36] and was released on March 2006.[38] The track peaked at number 50 in the Latin Pop Songs charts in the United States.[39] In Mexico, the song peaked at number 1 in the Monitor Latino and 36 in the Mexico Espanol Airplay.[40][41] This single reached #1 on the Mexican Chart and beat Shakira's Hips Don't Lie. In 2007, was certified Platinum (Format rigtone).[25]

They been successful on TV, as well as on the radio. "Tu Mirada en Mi" was released in the United States and the video has a high rotation on MTV Tr3s, in Mexico. It was released as the album's fourth single on April 2006 and peaked at #50 on Billboard Latin Pop chart.[39]

2008-2010: Habitación Doble

Early 2008, they recorded their third album, Habitación Doble, in Nashville, Tennessee.[16] This album have a collaboration of the singer Brandi Carlile with the song "Already Home",[42] their first English song recorded by them (like officially).[43] Even when "Already Home" wasn't a sinlge officially, was picked as the iTunes Single of the Week in late September 2008 in USA. Ha*Ash counted with the collaboration of Kany García, Gian Marco and Leonel García. The album was released on August 1, 2008.[44] The album peaked at #6 in the Mexican album charts and #14 in the US Billboard Latin Pop Albums.[24][45] The album eventually was certified gold in México.[25]

The first single from the album was "No Te Quiero Nada", released on July 8, 2008.[46] It peaked at #6 on Billboard Latin Pop chart.[39] In Mexico, the song peaked at number 1 in the Monitor Latino,[47] and 31 in the Mexico Espanol Airplay.[40] Was won for The Bes of Spain at the Premios Dial and Favorite Song Year at the ASCAP.[48][49] Was nominated for Favorite Song Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.[50] On November 24, 2008 "Lo Que Yo Sé de Ti" was released the second single. The track peaked at number 1 in the Mexico Airplay, Mexico Espanol Airplay and Monitor Latino charts in the Mexico.[51][40] "Tú y Yo Volvemos al Amor" it was released on February 6, 2009 as the third of the single. The song peaked at number 20 in the Mexico Español Airplay and 31 in the Mexico Airplay.[40][51]

During 2009, they continued their disc promotion throughout America offering different concerts. Additionally, they worked on film projects such as Disney's Tinker Bell and lent their voices to the IGOR film.[52][53] They performed for the first time in Spain on July 5 in Barbera del Valles, a small town next to Sabadell, on Dial Day promoted by the municipality of Barbera del Valles and Cadena Dial. The same week they were visiting the Operation Triunfo academy.[54][55]

2011-2013: A Tiempo

Three years passed between the last album and this Ha*Ash production titled A Tiempo.[56] The album peaked at #4 in the Mexican album charts.[57] Just as it is called the fourth item of the two sisters who decided to make it easy to launch a renewed work that could feel his evolution and maturity. A Tiempo is a primarily a synth-pop sound and electric album, consisting mainly of stripped down instruments such as the synthesizers, piano and acoustic guitar.[58][59][6] Ha*Ash worked with producer Áureo Baqueiro and invited Michele Canova. Ha*Ash, with help from of Leonel García, Natalia Lafourcade and Alejandro Fernández, created one of the best albums of his career and becoming so successful that they released a special edition, a deluxe edition.[60] The album eventually was certified Double Platinum and Gold in México.[25]

Of this material have detached four singles: "Impermeable", reached #1 on iTunes sales in Mexico and #1 in the Mexican radio charts,[26] The song peaked at number 1 in the Mexico Español Airplay and 6 in the Mexico Airplay.[40][51] The song was certified gold in Mexico.[25] "Te Dejo en Libertad" is chosen as the album second single released on July 11, 2011.[61] It peaked at #29 on Billboard Latin Pop chart and #1 on Mexico Español Airplay, Mexico Airplay and Monitor Latino.[40][51] Is released to U.S. radio this upcoming August 8. Song with great success created because of an experience of Ashley.[62]

The third single "Todo No Fue Suficiente" was released as the third single from the album on January 2, 2012.[63] The track peaked at number #2 in the Mexico Español Airplay and #11 in the Mexico Airplay charts in the México.[40][51] ¿De Dónde Sacas Eso?" theme created by Hanna experience, it was released as the fourth single from the album on July 11, 2012. The song was certified gold in Mexico.[25] But being "Te Dejo en Libertad" the most significant theme of the album, because reached number one on the Mexican Chart in 2011 and a large number of views on YouTube.[64] In 2013, it was announced that "Te Dejo en Libertad" had been certified Platinum and Gold.[25]

In 2012 they participated in the Talent program La voz... México as co-coaches of the Beto Cuevas team.[65] In August 20, 2013, Ha*Ash is featured on Leonel García's single "Te Voy a Perder".This collaboration will be included on Leonel García's "Todas Mías" album.[66]

2014-2017: Primera Fila: Hecho Realidad

At the end of the A Tiempo tour in 2013, Ha*Ash began the production of their first live album, Primera Fila: Hecho Realidad, released in 2014.[67][68] The album includes material from her past four studio albums as well as 8 newly recorded songs. Ha*Ash is the youngest group to record a Primera Fila concept album.[69] The album features collaborations by several performers, including Julio Ramírez, Maluma, Joy Huerta, Matisse, and Axel, among others.[70] The album was recorded in Lake Charles, Louisiana and Ciudad de México on July 7, 2014.[71][72] The album peaked at #1 in the Mexican album charts and #14 in the US Billboard Latin Pop Albums.[24][73] Ha*Ash worked with producers George Noriega, Pablo De La Loza, and Tim Mitchell. The album has been certified Quadruple Platinum and gold in Mexico for sales exceeding 240,000 copies.[25]

"Perdón, Perdón", was released as the lead single in September 2014. The track peaked at number 17 in the Latin Pop Songs, number 36 in the Hot Latin songs and at number 35 in the Latin Airplay charts in the United States.[29][30][39] In Mexico, the song peaked at number one on the Mexican Singles Chart, and Monitor Latino.[40] The song was certified triple platinum in México.[25] The second single, "Lo Aprendí de Ti" was released in March 6, 2015. The track peaked at number one on the Mexican Singles Chart and Monitor Latino.[40][74] In United States the songs peaked at number 19 in the Latin Pop Songs, number 32 in the Hot Latin songs and at number 59 in the Latin Airplay.[29][30][39] The song was certified doble platinum in México.[25] The other songs released were "Ex de Verdad", "No Te Quiero Nada" and "Dos Copas de Más".

On November 13, 2015, after the success of their first live album, a special edition of the album was released. Including three new tracks ("Quédate Lejos" featuring Maluma", "No Soy Yo" and "Pedazos"), a documentary about what has been his tour. It features videos of their songs "Si Pruebas una Vez" and "Quédate Lejos" and new versions of their songs "Ex de Verdad" and "Perdón, Perdón" accompanied by the Big Band Jazz of Mexico.[75][76]

In April 25, 2016, they released their six single from the album "Sé Que Te Vas". The track peaked at number 28 in the Mexico Espanol Airplay and at number 16 in the Monitor Latino on México.[40] A music video for "Sé Que Te Vas" featuring Matisse was released on May 6, 2015. The second music video for "Sé Que Te Vas" (solo version) was released on June 10, 2016.[77] The song (solo version) was certified Gold in México.[25]

On 2016, Ha*Ash is featured on Los Ángeles Azules's single "Mi Niña Mujer".This collaboration will be included on Los Ángelez Azules "De Plaza en Plaza album".[78] In June 2, 2017 Ha*Ash was also featured on Melendi's song "Destino o Casualidad", included on Melendi's "Quitate las Gafas" album.[79]

The project has enjoyed much success with a tour that started in late 2015 and has continued through much of 2017. Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Republica Dominicana, Uruguay, USA and Venezuela are some of the countries visited during Ha*Ash Primera Fila tour.[80][81] During the last leg of their Primera fila: Hecho realidad tour, the duo dedicated 3 days of the week to give concerts and the rest traveled to Miami, to prepare their new record material. The tour ended on September 30 at Guadalajara, Mexico.[82]

2017-present: 30 de Febrero

In 2017, they issued 30 de Febrero, which features collaborations with Prince Royce and Abraham Mateo on the title track. It was released on December 1, 2017 by Sony Music Latin.[83] Ha*Ash assumed an integral role in the album's production and collaborated with several producers including George Noriega, Matt Rad, Joe London and Edgar Barrera.[84] The album peaked at #3 in the Mexican album charts,[85] #11 in the US Billboard Latin Pop Albums and #11 in the US Billboard Latin pop sales.[24][86] The album eventually was certified Platinum and Gold in México.[87]

The first single from the album is "100 Años" with Prince Royce; launched in October 13, 2017,[88][89] The track peaked at number 50 in the Latin Pop Songs, and number 24 in the Latin Airplay charts in the United States.[30][39] In Mexico, the song peaked at number one on the Mexico Espanol Airplay, and Monitor Latino.[40][90] The video for this single was released on October 20, 2017.[91] "100 Años" was certified platinum and gold in México and gold in United States.[87][92] Then as for the month of November Ha*Ash released "Ojalá" lyric video.[93][94] Same month of November they released the song "30 de Febrero" which featured Abraham Mateo and 3th lyric video "Eso No Va a Suceder".[95] The 4th, 5th and 6th lyric videos came out on December 1, which were "Paleta", "No Pasa Nada", and "Llueve Sobre Mojado", which were all released the same day the album dropped.[96][97][98]

To further promote the album, Ha*Ash embarked on a world concert tour during 2018 and 2019. The "Gira 100 años contigo" is a concert tour performed by Ha*Ash. The tour was announced by Ha*Ash on her social media on November 2017.[99][100] On January 13, 2018 it was confirmed that Ha*Ash will be holding concerts for their new recent album. The tour, began on February 24, 2018 in Viña del Mar International Song Festival.[101] Ha*Ash won the Silver and Golden Seagull after their presentation.[102][103]

The second single "No Pasa Nada; was released in March 8, 2018,[104] The track peaked at number 13 in the Mexico Airplay, number 4 in the Mexico Espanol Airplay charts in the México at number two on the Monitor Latino.[40][51][105] In August 8, 2018, they released the third single from the album, "Eso No Va a Suceder".[106] The song peaked at number 34 in the Latin Pop Songs charts in the United States.[39] In Mexico, reached number one the Mexican Espanol Airplay and Monitor Latino.[40][107]

On October 2018 Ha*Ash they became the first singers latin music to was released the concept "Spotify Singles", publishing a new version of "No Pasa Nada", and a cover of "Adiós Amor".[108] In November 4, 2018 Ha*Ash won the Best Latin America North Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards.[109][110] The "Gira 100 años contigo" visited South America, North America and Europe.[111] Footage from the concert at the Auditorio Nacional on November 11, 2018 in México were recorded and i will released on a DVD in 2019.[87][112] Included the participation of Miguel Bosé, Melendi, Prince Royce on stage and Dhasia Weska and Renata Notni, in the behind the scenes.[113] On November 11, it was announced that "Eso No Va a Suceder" had been certified gold in México.[87]

"¿Qué Me Faltó?" it was released as the fourth single in January 4, 2019.[114] The track peaked two on the Monitor Latino in Mexico.[115] On February 1, 2019, it was announced that "No Pasa Nada", "30 de febrero" and "Ojalá" had been certified Platinum in Mexico.[116] In June 7, 2019, Ha*Ash is featured on María José's song "Rosas en Mi Almohada".This collaboration will be included on María José's "Conexión" album.[117]

Philanthropy

In August and September 2005, they lent their home in Louisiana, United States to some affected by Hurricane Katrina. They also participated in an event for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the United States for the support of victims.[118]

In December 2007, they joined charities in launching the Fondo Ha*Ash, which supports children suffering from VIH/SIDA and immigrants. This was publicized by a charity concert at the Teatro Metropolitan. They performed "Hoy rezaremos por ti", a previously unpublished song, accompanied by a chorus of some of the children benefited by the foundation. The song became an identifying anthem.[119]

In 2010, Hanna and Ashley were named ambassadors of the Save the Children Foundation.[120] They also recorded the song "Latente" to capture the experiences lived in the visit that the sisters made to Haiti in August of that year, after the earthquake that hit that country, and whose profits will be donated to the children of Haiti through of said foundation.[121] They have actively participated since 2010, collaborating with the # NiñezMigrante project in Chiapas and Puebla, as well as supporting the humanitarian response of Save the Children after the September 2017 earthquakes in Mexico.[122]

In 2016, they carried out the project "Barriga llena, corazón contento", where they brought food to people in street situations, for this they launched a call to their peers of the program "Me Pongo de Pie" and their followers to also perform this noble cause.[123] They were recognized as "Agents of Change" in the KCA Mexico, for this social work.[123] On December 7, 2018 Ha*Ash appeared at the Coliseo Centenario of Torreón as part of his tour, to promote a charitable cause. The proceeds from the show were donated to the association “Sonríe… Solo tienes cáncer”, which supports the prevention and treatment of this condition.[124]

Hanna & Ashley frequently visit children suffering from illnesses, responding to requests made through social networks and by followers.[125] During the visits, they perform songs and give gifts.[126][127] The duo traveled to Torreón to fulfill the dream of Paola a woman who suffered from leukemia and who wanted to meet them.[128] She died days after the visit of the sisters.[129]

Musical style and influences

Ha*Ash's music style has generally been regarded as country, pop country, pop and ballad.[3][4][5] Ha*Ash 's first album Ha*Ash had an arguably more "country and pop" sound that was "delivered particularly well" and the combination of the two had created a "pop/country album".[130] The band's later albums, such as A Tiempo and 30 de Febrero, included more of a new wave and synth-pop sound, urban and electric.[3][6][131] Instrumentally, Ha*Ash bring a mix of piano, synthesizers, drums, vocals, organs, bass, and guitar. Ha*Ash has expressed appreciation for Shania Twain, Loretta Lynn, Dixie Chicks and Patsy Cline.[132][133]
