History
In 2006, CoCoMelon was created under the belief that a newly budding website called YouTube could be used as a potential platform to provide the world with free education. Then known as ThatsMEonTV, CoCoMelon uploaded their first two videos, two versions of the Alphabet Song, to YouTube on September 1st, 2006. The channel uploaded their third video 9 months later, titled "Learning ABC Alphabet – Letter "K" – Kangaroo Game"[2].
''Super Simple Songs'', another respected children's video channel, was created 7 days after CoCoMelon on September 8th 2006. These two channels were the co-pioneers of quality educational content on YouTube.
Early videos used a unique "picturebook" aesthetic, combining 2D animation, classical-influenced music production and a slow-paced storyline. Most videos on the channel taught a single alphabet with a typical length of between 1-2 minutes. The picturebook aesthetic proved popular with viewers, and developed a loyal fanbase of children and parents. The channel continued to release ABC themed videos under the promise of sharing educational content with everyone.
The ABCkidTV era featured a new intro, jingle and logo. The logo shows a TV with a ladybug on the upper left corner. The channel began remastering older videos due to progress in animation technology, followed by a transition from alphabet videos to nursery rhymes and a longer video length. Nursery rhyme videos were uploaded more frequently while older alphabet videos were combined into categorical compilations. Longer videos on YouTube lead to the increase of online video consumption, allowing CoCoMelon to become an alternative to TV. The channel began transitioning into 3D animation, with their first 3D character being used in Twinkle Tinkle Little Star on April 8th, 2016[3]. The video featured a 3D flying star guiding 2D characters through the sky. 3D animation video uploads became more frequent and longer, with some videos even using motion capture technology. Animation and music production continued to improve, and a reoccurring cast of characters began to form.
Rise in Popularity
After 9 years on YouTube, CoCoMelon reached 1 million subscribers on May 15th of 2016. One month later, the channel reached 1 billion views. The following two years continued to see growth with nearly 400,000 subscribers per month to 10 million subscribers and gaining 7 billion views until August 18 2018 where the company would rebrand for the final time.
CoCoMelon's new logo features a watermelon TV with a ladybug on the top left corner. The channel mainly focuses on Nursery Rhymes for children and high quality 3D animation and catchy, educational children's songs. CoCoMelon's website promises to create "Beautiful 3D animation, educational lyrics, and infectious, toe-tapping music"[4].
