Article Evaluation: For the most part, everything in the article was relevant except for the section titled “Climate cycles” – in the second paragraph, a clear distinction was made between migration and nomadic movements such that nomadic movements are not categorized as migrations. However, if nomadic people are not considered to be migrants, then this section serves very little purpose to the topic of human migration. The third sentence in the third paragraph under the section titled “Migration statistics” used the phrase “the most significant” which is a value statement and this phrase made me question the neutrality of the article. Therefore, I clicked on the citation only to find that the website had a small summary from a report published by the UN and the statistic that was referenced in the article making the claim that over half of the 57 million migrants in 2013 were women was no where to be found in that summary. I then tried to download the article by clicking the download button and could not successfully download the article. As I continued to read, I found more statistics that aren’t properly cited. Under the same section titled “Migration statistics” the top ten receiving and sending countries are listed and there is a citation at the end of these lists – when I looked up the citation on the references page, it was missing and this information is therefore not verifiable. Any fact cited with the number [8] and [10] should be updated or thrown out altogether. Another thing that caught my attention is the source titled “The Evolution of the Human Migration Determinants” – this article, as stated in the citation itself, is a draft paper which makes me question how reliable this source may be. I am not sure whether or not this draft paper has undergone peer review and has been published, but this may be something that should be looked into and updated if necessary. For the most part, the remaining references seem to be reliable and neutral, however, there are a lot of theories that have missing information and many more theories that can be added. In adding more theories, the Wikipedia page could then cover a broader scope of reasons why people migrate as we have discussed thoroughly in class, helping to make the article more neutral and stray away from the assumption that it is over representing certain theories by not including others. After looking at the talk page, I read many suggestions on how the article could be improved by adding a section for 20th and 21st century migration in order to include a more modern representation in addition to adding updated graphs and potential video sources, with everyone reaching the consensus that the article in its current state is of very poor quality. The article is apart of seven WikiProjects and has been consistently rated as a C-class article.
