Alan White (born 22 March 1976) is an English former footballer who made over 400 appearances in the Football League. He is currently the assistant manager at Darlington.[2]

Career

Born in Darlington, County Durham,[1] White began his career as a trainee at Middlesbrough in 1995, but his only first-team appearance came in the Anglo-Italian Cup[3] before joining Luton Town in September 1997 for a fee of £40,000, where he made over 80 league appearances in three seasons.[4] He had a one-month loan spell with Colchester United in December 1999[4] and later joined Colchester on a free transfer in July 2000.[5]

White made 166 appearances for Colchester in four seasons, scoring four goals, and was voted player of the year in the 2003–04 season.[6] He rejected the offer of a new contract with the U's and instead joined Leyton Orient in June 2004 on a two-year deal.[7] However, he was allowed to leave nine months later and joined Boston United in March 2005 on a one-year contract, with Boston manager Steve Evans stating, "I'm delighted to get Alan on board. He was outstanding for Colchester United last season and is a great competitor."[8]

At the end of his Boston contract in June 2006, White joined Notts County on a free transfer,[9] where he was made club captain.[10] Nine months later, he joined Peterborough United on loan for the remainder of the 2006–07 season[10] and then was one of six players released by Notts County at the end of the season.[11]

White joined his hometown club Darlington on 15 May 2007.[12] By the end of the 2008–09 season, White had made 85 league and cup appearances for Darlington.[4] Darlington entered administration in February 2008, and White was told he would be free to leave the club at the end of the season.[13] He subsequently re-joined Luton Town on a two-year contract on 8 June 2009.[14] He played 24 games for the club before being placed on the transfer list at Luton on 12 January 2010. Three days later he re-joined Darlington on loan for the rest of the 2009–10 season.[15] He made 24 appearances as Darlington were relegated from The Football League, picking up just 30 points from 46 games.

On 27 August 2010, White was released by Luton.[16] He was picked up by Stalybridge Celtic and made his debut against Alfreton Town on 2 October 2010.[17] White made 8 league and cup appearances for Stalybridge before signing for Gateshead on a monthly contract on 18 November 2010.[18] White made his debut for Gateshead on 20 November 2010 in a 1–1 draw with Forest Green Rovers.[19] White scored his first goal for Gateshead on 14 December 2010 against Southport in the FA Trophy.[20] On 8 February 2011, Gateshead announced that they had released White.[21]

On 11 February 2011, White signed for Blyth Spartans.[22] He made his debut on 15 February 2011 against Alfreton Town, scoring an own goal in a 2–1 defeat.[23]
