The Potts model is a generalization of the Ising model and one of the many highly simplified models in the branch of physics known as statistical mechanics. The Potts model consists of spins that are placed on a lattice. The spins take on values ranging from where defines the number of states. The Hamiltonian of the Potts model is given by:


where indicates a summation over all neighboring spins, and is the spin value.
