Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) is a public medical school located in Camden, New Jersey. It was created as a partnership between Rowan University and Cooper University Hospital in 2009 by the executive order of Governor Jon Corzine.[1] CMSRU opened in summer 2012. It is the first new medical school in New Jersey in over 35 years and the only four-year MD-granting medical school in South Jersey. Rowan University and The Cooper Health System partnered in June 2009 to establish CMSRU. Located in Camden, NJ, CMSRU will help address the physician shortage locally and nationally, and improve healthcare throughout the region. New Jersey governor and Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie spoke at the school's opening. Its charter class was admitted in May 2012, and a second class matriculated in the Fall of 2013. CMSRU boasts an innovative curriculum focusing on small-group interactions and extended clinic time with patients for first and second-year students.

Facilities

The Cooper Medical Education Building is on South Broadway on the Cooper Health Sciences campus. It opened in July 2012 and contains a 250 seat auditorium, a 140 seat multipurpose room, 25 Active Learning Rooms, a Clinical Simulation Center and a satellite medical library. It is a Gold LEED certified building.[2]

Accreditation

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University has received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Provisional and full accreditation will occur as the inaugural class moves through their education [3]. The medical school was upgraded to provisional status after being found to be in full compliance after a March 2014 LCME review. It is the fourth of the five accrediting steps.

Rowan University is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
