Coed School (Korean: 남녀공학, "Namnyeo Gonghak") is a South Korean idol group formed by Core Contents Media in 2010.
The group originally debuted with 6 male and 4 female members[1]: Soomi, Kwanghaeng, Yoosung, Taewoon, Kangho, Chanmi, Noori, Hyoyoung, Hyewon, and Sungmin. Their first single "Too Late" was released in late September 2010; followed by "Bbiribbom Bberibbom" and later by their debut mini-album Something That is Cheerful and Fresh. The female subunit, 5dolls, made their debut in 2011 and the male subunit, SPEED, in 2013.
The group has gone through many line-up changes since their debut; the current line-up consists of 7 male and 6 female members. The group is rumoured to have split completely into the two subunits, with rumours that a brand new Coed School will debut in the future with all new members.[citation needed]
Career
Debut and Something That is Cheerful and Fresh
All ten members used a four-character stage name during their debut: Smile Soomi (미소수미), Star Light Chanmi (별빛찬미), One Light Hyoyoung (한빛효영), One Star Hyewon (한별혜원), Rascal Kwangheng (악동광행), Sky Earth Yoosung (천지유성), Sage Taewoon (지혜태운), Hot Blood Kangho (열혈강호), Balance Noori (가온누리), and Solid Sungmin (알찬성민). By February 8, 2012, the group no longer used a four-character stage name.
The group's 2010 debut single was "Too Late", followed three weeks later by a second single, "Bbiribbom Bberibbom" in October. The music video for "Bbiribbom Bberibbom" featured [[T-ara|T-ARA's] Ham Eun-jeong. "Bbiribbom Bberibbom" peaked at number 61 on the Gaon Chart.[2]
The group's debut mini album, Something That Is Cheerful and Fresh, was released on October 28, 2010. Core Contents Media claimed that the album had received 50,000 pre-orders.[3]
A halt was put on Coed School's activities after separate photos of Kangho and Noori, both who were considered minors at the time, at a bar drinking with friends surfaced online.[4][5]
2011: 5dolls debuts and line-up changes
The four female members of the group along with a new member, Seo Eungyo, became 5dolls.[6] Eungyo became the 11th member of Coed School.
On January 20, 5dolls released two promotional videos featuring Jay Park, one called "Lip Stains" and the other one called "It's You". 5dolls released their first mini album on February 16, 2011 and debuted on Mnet's M! Countdown on February 17.[7]
Kangho left in November of 2011 to focus on acting and was replaced by Shin Jongkook, with Coed School remaining as eleven members.[8][9] The five remaining male members, plus Jongkook, debuted under the name SPEED the year after.
2012: SPEED's pre-debut song and continued line-up changes
In February 2012, Coed School was moved to Mnet Media's sub-label, GM Contents Media. Coed School's leader Soomi decided to go solo and withdrew from the group, staying with Core Contents Media. She was replaced by Nayeon.[10][11]
About a year later, SPEED released a digital single "Lovey Dovey Plus" and two versions of the music videos for the song. Former T-ARA member, Hwayoung and her sister, Hyoyoung from 5dolls made a cameo in the music video. "Lovey Dovey Plus" is a remake of T-ARA's [Dovey], in which the Coed School members appeared in the zombie version of the music video. Although it is not considered the offical debut of SPEED, the male unit group has promoted this song on various broadcasting stations.
Later that year, another male member, Sejun, was added to the male subunit.[12]
2013: SPEED's debut, more line-up changes and 5dolls comeback
It was revealed in early 2013, that Chanmi, Noori and Kwanghaeng left Coed School and its subunits.[13] Three new members were then added in October of 2012: female member, Shannon Pix, and two male members, Yuhwan and Taeha.[citation needed] In February 2013, new female member Jihyun was added.[14]
In December of 2012, it was announced that SPEED would be making their official debut in early 2013 with the single "It's Over". On January 6, two music videos were released for the song "Sad Promise" featuring labelmate Davichi's Kang Minkyung—a dance version and a drama version featuring Park Bo-young, A Pink's Naeun, Ji Chang-wook, and Ha Seok-jin.[15] The drama version is a two-part music video based on the Gwangju Democratization Movement. Part two of of the music drama was released on January 14 along with the dance version of "It's Over". The group made their debut stage on Mnet's M! Countdown on January 17. SPEED released a repackaged album, Blow Speed, and continued promotions with their follow-up song "Pain".
5dolls is planning for a comeback in April with its six female members.[16]
