Edward Rapallo (March 1, 1914 – February 6, 1984) was a Gibraltar first Bishop of Gibraltar who was born in Gibraltar.

Biography

Rapallo was born in Gibraltar in 1914 and he was a priest by the time he was 23. He served 46 years as a priest with over ten of them as a Bishop in Gibraltar.[1] Rapallo's ceremony to establish him as a Bishop had been conducted in an aircraft hangar.

Rapallo died suddenly in Gibralter in 1984, causing Michael Bowen who was an Archbishop of Southwark who had assisted at his consecration as a Bishop in 1973. Bowen was also from Gibraltar to return to the Rock for his funeral. Bowen praised Rapallo's pastoral skills and his ability to bring together the Jewish, Indian and Christian communities on Gibraltar.[2]

Legacy

Rapallo was responsible for establishing Our Lady of Europe as the patron saint of Gibraltar and he petitioned to have her feast day to be moved to 5 May because it was Europe Day. Rapallo had the honour of announcing the reconsecration of the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe.[3] There is also a street in Gibraltar which is named Bishop Rapallo's Ramp.
