In hydrology a lens is a layer of subsurface freshwater that floats on top of denser sea water. They arise when rainwater permeates down through the soil surface and then pools over a layer of saltwater at or below sealevel. Freshwater lenses are commonly found on small coral and limestone islands and atolls. [1][2]
