Marc Kevin Albrighton (born 18 November 1989 in Tamworth, Staffordshire) is an English professional footballer who plays for Premier League side Aston Villa as a right winger.
Club career
Aston Villa
Albrighton started his career at hometown club Mile Oak Monarchs,[4] before he was offered a trial at Villa's local rivals West Bromwich Albion. He was rejected by Albion, then subsequently signed for Villa at the age of eight.[2]
After impressing in the under-18 squad and playing in the reserves,[5] Albrighton's first taste of senior action came on 10 July 2008, playing 17 minutes as a substitute in the 6–0 pre-season friendly victory over Wil.[6] He made his competitive debut in the UEFA Cup game away at CSKA Moscow on 26 February 2009.[2][7]
During the 2009–10 pre-season, Albrighton was included in the squad which played in the pre-season friendly tournament, the 2009 Peace Cup, in which he scored his first goal for the club in a 3–1 win over Atlante.[8] He played in the Peace Cup final in which Villa beat Italians Juventus 4–3 in a penalty shootout.[9]
Albrighton made his Premier League debut on the opening day of the 2009–10 season against Wigan Athletic at Villa Park, coming on as a second half substitute.[10] On 24 September 2009, Albrighton extended his contract with Villa, his boyhood club, by three years.[11] On 29 December 2009, he made his second top flight appearance for the Villa first team, coming on as a second half substitute against Liverpool. Shortly after the game, former Villa boss Martin O'Neill admitted that Albrighton along with fellow youngsters Nathan Delfouneso and Ciaran Clark were the subject of many loan offers from clubs throughout the season. However, he went on to state his belief that the trio were good enough to learn their trade in the fringes of the Aston Villa side.[12]
After a good pre-season, Albrighton made his first Premier League start in the first game of the 2010–11 season against West Ham United on August 14, 2010. In this game he assisted two goals in Villa's 3–0 win. Albrighton also made a run which led to the assist of the goal by Barry Bannan in Villa's 1-1 draw against Rapid Vienna in the 1st leg of their UEFA Europa League qualification tie on 19 August. He scored his first Premier League goal for Villa against Tottenham Hotspur on 2 October 2010. He was sent off against Burnley in the League Cup on 27 October 2010 therefore missing a chance to play in the following game against local rivals Birmingham City. On 5 November 2010 Albrighton signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2014. On 6 November Albrighton scored his second goal of the season in a 1-1 draw away at Fulham. On 13 November 2010, Albrighton scored his third club goal for Aston Villa against Manchester United. He started the game alongside fellow academy products Barry Bannan, Jonathan Hogg and Gabriel Agbonlahor. After putting Aston Villa 2-0 up, the game ended 2-2.
International career
On 2 April 2009, Albrighton made his debut for the England under 20s.[13] He made his debut for U21 team in September 2010 during their Euro 2011 qualifying play-offs and scored just fifteen minutes after coming on as a substitute.[14]
Personal life
In addition to being a player for the club, Albrighton has also been a supporter of Aston Villa since a young age. He has named David Ginola and Benito Carbone as two of his footballing role models.[15]
