The Ministry of Economic Development (Manatū Ōhanga in Māori) in New Zealand has an overarching goal of promoting the development of New Zealand's economy. However, it deals with policy in a wide range of different areas such as: energy, communications and the radio spectrum, industry and regional development, intellectual property, consumer issues, tourism, international trade, and the regulatory environment. The Ministry serves seven Ministerial portfolios and six Associate Ministerial portfolios to a total of 11 Ministers and Associate Ministers (some of which have multiple portfolios) and The Chief Executive for the Ministry of Economic Development is David Smol.

Organisation

The Ministry is divided into seven branches focussing on specific areas, each with its own Deputy Secretary:

  • Economic Strategy - [Chief Economist - Roger Procter];

  • Business Services - Neville Harris;
  • Competition, Trade & Investment - Andrew Jackson;
  • Tourism, Events, Consumer Affairs (including the Ministries of Consumer Affairs and Tourism) - Liz MacPherson;
  • Energy & Communication - Bruce Parkes; and
  • Organisational Development and Support - Gaye Searancke.
