Ambush Bay is a 1966 war film filmed on location in the Philippines.
Plot
Prior to the 1944 American invasion of the Philippines a hand picked team of U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious reconnaissance is landed by a PBY Catalina with the mission of contacting an intelligence agent. Each Marine is not only experienced but has a special skill with the exception of the radio operator, PFC James Grenier (James Mitchum) who was taken off the air crew when the original radio operator suddenly became medically unfit for the mission. Grenier serves as a narrator to the audience.
After the patrol commander (Lieutenant Colonel Clement J. Stadler who had been awarded the Navy Cross[1] in World War II who was the film'stechnical advisor; a function he also performed in Hell to Eternity, The Outsider (1961 film), Ambush Bay and The Lieutenant television series) is killed, 1st Sergeant Steve Corey (Hugh O'Brian, recognised as one of the youngest Drill Instructors to have served in the USMC) takes command.
Grenier's inexperience and incompetence arouses anger amongst Corey and the other members of the patrol, especially when his radio his destroyed when he disobeys orders. His only friend is Gunnery Sergeant Ernest Wartell (Mickey Rooney) who acts as a mediator between 1st Sgt Corey and Grenier.
The patrol loses several members before linking up with the Philippine Resistance movement and meeting their contact a Japanese American, Miyazaki (Tisa Chang). Miyazaki explains that the Japanese have learned the location of the American landings and have planted the invasion area with Naval mines that are controlled from a nearby base.
At last discovering the Marine principles of mission accomplishment, altruism, and Self sacrifice Grenier becomes a squared away Marine as he and his First Sergeant infiltrate the Japanese base to contact the invasion fleet with the Japanese radio transmitter.
