Help with references

Hi Ed. I was wondering if you could help me with something to do with references. I have seen articles before where the same reference is used more than once and it is listed once in the ref list with its uses listed (a,b,c) etc beside it. How do you get that to happen? I have used a {{cite web}} ref twice but in the list of references it shows up twice. Do you (or anyone else) know what to do? Thanks. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 02:00, 1 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

TPS - well, you know how when you create a new citation you always have to name the reference? To get the same thing, do <ref name="NAME OF REF YOU USED ALREADY GOES HERE" /> ... like that. And it does itself. Test it out, if it doesn't work, someone'll look at it. Icy // 02:08, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A quick poke through Alaska shows that Eddie used <ref group=A> in much the same way as Icy outlined for "ref name." So you could say <ref group=B>, <ref group=C>, and so on. —La Pianista (TC) 02:18, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that works. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 02:23, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ed, if you've got time, could you have a quick look through here and tell me what you think so far. Thanks. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 03:30, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't look too bad so far! I took a quick MoS run through it, but it wasn't bad. :) Did you see my 00:24, 30 December 2008 (UTC) post? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 04:00, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I took a look at Google Books but couldn't find much for what I wanted. I'll look again when I expand the article. Also, I'll make sure I always add an 'access date' to the refs from now on. And it's punctuation before refs. Did you change anything else? Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 04:07, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Make sure that you've got a page number for that book ref, and you need a source where I added that {{fact}}.
Humph. Do any newspapers near Buckinghamshire put up their old archives?
(after) What're you doing Pianista?!? :P —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 04:17, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Being an idiot...one would think I have no life, the way I cling to you people... —La Pianista (TC) 04:19, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a ref for the {{fact}} and am able to go to my library to find out that page number. I've put another source for the text in question anyway, but I don't want all the sources to be websites.
I've never seen my local paper, the Bucks Free Press ever put up any really old archives, even though it was founded in the 1850s. I may be wrong, but I can't see a link on their website. Thanks. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 04:28, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(out) That is good thinking. :)
If you are really dedicated, you may be able to request specific papers from them...or your library may have microfilms of them. Just throwing ideas out there... —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 06:03, 1 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

*confetti*

<baby talk>Awl donnnnnne! I did good job, Eddiee? —La Pianista (TC) 06:54, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LOL yes, yes you did. Only couple more content additions, and off to FAC. :) Thank you, thank you, thank you! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 07:01, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! It was actually pretty fun. :) —La Pianista (TC) 16:28, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fellow gnome, I admit that I could never have thought of that ...but I got the last edit in of 2008 on that page! Which means nothing ...but bragging rights, bien sûr. Happy new year, Ed! Icy // 17:24, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Lol! Happy New Year to you too, Icy. Thanks! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:31, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Soooo...shamelessly hogging the limelight, are we? Jk - see my comment on your blog, Icy. :)La Pianista (TC) 05:55, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly have no idea. I'm not a night person, and neither am I a morning one...but excuses don't work. Fail. ;) —La Pianista (TC) 06:56, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Lol no big deal, just had to raz you.
And keep c/e'ing Alaska whenever you see something please (don't declare something to be your "last edit" =[ )! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 07:09, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know - the more I see of it, the more tempting it is to change it, even if nothing's wrong at all. Gnome syndrome, technically chronic but in acute waves... —La Pianista (TC) 07:11, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah ...Lately, I've been forcing myself to not reword something "just 'cause it makes me happy" ...so odd. Icy // 17:01, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can I add you guys as co-noms at FAC? (You both did a ton of work on it.) If yes, I will be nominating tomorrow after work, or on Sunday when I finally have some time to myself that is longer than an hour. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:37, 3 January 2009 (UTC) : Uhh ...if you want. Icy // 01:05, 3 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

No way! I don't deserve it. How could you insinuate such a thing, you bad boy! :P
Please, keep the credit - share it with Icy if you want. I already feel kinda bad for splitting a DYK with Chamal - I still don't think half of it should be mine, even a quarter. —La Pianista (TC) 02:29, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
<3 All those hyphens...
*fanning self* Why, sah, I do believe...why, I do believe I am getting the vapors...La Pianista (TC) 04:31, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you sure do deserve a big trout whale for saying that. That's rich, coming from someone who wanted to hunt me down with a trout for saying I'm no good at anything. But heh, I guess I'd feel like that too - I'm not too comfortable about the DYK for 14"/50 caliber gun with Ed. Chamal talk 04:50, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, you cannot give me any credit if you don't give Pianista any. Even if you want. Above comment struck. Icy // 15:43, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wait a minute! I didn't say I wasn't good at anything - that came from some other guy whose name I can't remember now. That would have been truly trout-deserving. I admit I'm a clever gnome and copyeditor, but nothing of a content-builder. That's why I didn't deserve the FA or DYK nom - our FLC, though, might be "creditable" on my part, since I'll be keeping up with the images and comments. K? :) —La Pianista (TC) 16:22, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ZOMG all of you. Pianista and Icy, I'm nomming that article right after this (look here). Just add bloody co-noms, because you guys did do a lot - that article had NO chance of passing a FAC before you two. You guys are gonna get credit either way...I'll make sure of it. :P
Chamal, you wrote the majority of that article, so take THAT and chew on it. :)
Anyway, I work for eight hours starting at 1 my time, and I don't think that I will be able to get on after that. So I'll see you kids later. :P —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 18:07, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, you'd better remove my credit unless you want me to...uh...What can I do to you that I haven't done already...?
Okay, fine. Have it your way. ;P —La Pianista (TC) 18:15, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Icy, you better add your name too. :D
<3 Thanks Pianista! Geesh, make my life difficult. Now you get to help address any reviewers' concerns... ;)
Now, off to get ready for work. Cheers all! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 18:35, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
All righty! Stay safe now - don't leave your baby without a Daddy. ;) —La Pianista (TC) 18:40, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Co-nomed  Done. But I'm late again. Aw, well. Against my better judgment, I added my name. Icy // 18:42, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings (and some Milhist business)

First, happy new year!

Second, I've raised a couple of things here which could use swift responses. May I trouble you please to check them out?

My age

I don't actually like beer so I wouldn't drink it if I was fifty. Now you're a man, will you resist the alcohol?!

Do you know when the WikiCup scoreboards are updated by the way? I want to know my score! I've also taken a decision. I will alternate between article building and vandalism reversion each day. Huggle's just not as exciting as it was when I first used it! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 23:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

LOL, and yes I will - only have had alcohol in church before! :D (communion wine)
Nope, I have no idea. :) And yeah, everything gets less exciting over time...I dunno. Content additions are a lot less fun right now, and with my busy schedule it's hard to do content building anyway! Maybe I'll go to AfC or AFD...w/e lol :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 23:17, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I saw some guys userpage where he stated that he'd only support people for adminship if they visited and commented on at least five AfD's a day.
Do you see a GA in that transport article if I keep working on it like I am now? I try to add a ref for any comment that is not obvious. Also, what is the general attitude to images on GA's and FA's. Do they have to pass some sort of relevancy test? (I'm new to this!) Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 23:38, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Walking out the door right now, will reply in full later...but for the "roads" section, look at Road FA's...don't they use Google Maps or something? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 23:48, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The roads section was added by someone else today. I don't like it and will jazz it up when I get to roads. That road section is just a copy of the road section from the main Buckinghamshire article. See ya later! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 23:51, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
GA? Yes.
No, just make sure that the licensing is OK. :) Yes, that Denbigh Bridge pic is ok.
What I meant by Google Maps is that some road FA's I've seen use it to reference where these roads go (through x town, etc.). Would that help you? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 06:00, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Ed. I'll try that thing with Google Maps tomorrow (today's my vandal fighting shift!). I've just been playing about with Twinkles configuration- I've altered it so that I don't give out shared IP notices with warnings- level 4 warnings don't look as forceful with them there!
The WikiCup scoreboards have some scores but I don't know if they're real or not (you've got no points at all). I haven't seen any bots editing the scoreboard. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 20:03, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Lol well have fin with that. :P
Yes, they are right. See User:Garden/WikiCup/2009.
I have a book called The World's Great Railway Journeys...would any of these routes help?
London Euston to Glasgow checkY
London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverly (The Flying Scotsman)
London Paddington to Swansea (The Red Dragon) checkY
London Euston to Holyhead (The Irish Mail) checkY
London Paddington to Penzance checkY
London Victoria to Dover (The Golden Arrow)
Beford to Bletchley checkY
London to Cologne
I hope that one of these routes can help. :) Cheers! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 23:54, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The one's ticked above are of use to me (all routes out of Paddington and most out Euston have to go through Bucks). London has about 20 main line termini- three have services to Buckinghamshire (the other being Marylebone). I don't know why Bedford to Bletchley is a great railway- just a commuter line. Anyway thanks- I'll see if I can purchase that book from somewhere. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 19:04, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(out) You are a funny one, Ollie. I'll add the stuff you need for you as soon as I have time (i.e. like when I slog through this bloody FAC!. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:21, 4 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Is it a large book? I don't want you slogging through pages and pages of text to find one sentence for me! It's hard work, this article. Bucks has a long railway history- we had two main lines in 1838, a branch line in 1839, another important railway in 1850, another in 1854, in 1863, 1889, 1892, 1906 and 1912- all to be written up! I'm only up to 1839! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 00:35, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's an encyclopedia of sorts - about two pages on each route. Nothing compared to what I slogged through for Error: {{sclass}} invalid format code: 6. Should be 0–5, or blank (help)...:) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So what do we do? Do you want to give me a {{cite book}} ref for each route. I can then add them to the relevant section, as long as the source says what the text says! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 01:01, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, sure! And I'll add some stuff too...but tommorow. Have to go now. -_- Sorry! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:27, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I won't be in till about 19:00 UTC tomorrow evening- going to London! Did you see the new Wikicup scoring regulations- no Huggle or Twinkles! Poor J.delanoy!, I think he's a bit upset judging by his userpage (He's withdrawn). Even when Huggle was allowed, you'd have to revert 100 vandals to get 1 point! See ya later today. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 01:54, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh darn it. One last check of my watchlist reminds me tha tI forgot about this...again. I'm really sorry Ollie...I promise that I will get to it... =/ —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 08:05, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, this sucks. I don't know anything about your geography, so when I see town names, I don't know if they are in Buckinghamshire! =/ —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:32, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage

Can you give me any tips on how to make my userpage better...? It just seems to be pathetically short and anything I add to make it longer seems to be pointless and just drags on. I've thought of adding book reviews like yours, but I want something else too. Any ideas? Oh, and I want to think up a colour scheme that goes with my sig, but I've tried that ([1]) and it just seems girly. Any ideas? Your and Pianista's userpages are so good! Not a lot of time right now, but my suggestion is to talk to Pianista - she likes to help design user pages... (the next Phaedriel? :D) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 19:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(Sound familiar? :P) If you like, though, I can change it. How about "rigged"? "Riddled"? "Covered/Smothered with", perhaps? Re: navweapons.com

Thanks for the welcome back message. I commented at the FAC. Hope it helps. Also, I have been watching your contributions closely since you were coopted to fill in as a coordinator after I bolted, and you have done an outstanding job. You pick things up quick, and you work well with others. AS a result, I am of the opinion that you would make a good admin, and if you like I would be willing to file an rfa for you if you decide you want adminship responsibilites. TomStar81 (Talk) 23:50, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See Ed, I told you it was coming. Co-nom? -MBK004 23:56, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Heh heh. Co-nom? —La Pianista (TC) 00:16, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Pianista, it is usually better if the noms/co-noms are done by admins. -MBK004 00:30, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@La Pianista: Since you and Ed are so close, you should run for adminship too, as a couple. :P LittleMountain5 00:57, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(@ Tom) Thanks! I replied to it there...but MAN I knew it was one of your FACs...I just couldn't remember which. :)
(@ Tom, MBK, Pianista) Well, ah, I can't claim that this was completely unexpected per MBK, and becuase of that I have been thinking about it, but do you guys really think that I have a chance? I mean, I do not participate in the "admin" areas very often, and, well....yeah.
(@ LM5) LOL o just shut it, pal. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:09, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(@ MBK) Eh, it doesn't really matter if the nominator is an admin; what does matter is the strength of the nomination. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 02:21, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@ Ed: You as hell do have a chance. J.delanoy's an admin, and he admits that he just Huggles around here. He's just good at what he does and is of the right temperament - just like yourself. :)
@ MBK: OK...if you think so. On second thought, I might not be able to write a really good nom anyway.
@ LM: Oh, yeah. We'd be an unstoppable duo. I say, our kid would be a crat and an admin...on ten different wikis. ;P —La Pianista (TC) 04:14, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@ Ed: Definitely! Let me see: You have 1 FA (almost two), two A class articles, four GAs, your a coordinator of WP:MILHIST, and you're well known. I think you have a great chance!
@ Pianista: That would be amazing! Seriously though, you would make a great admin! LittleMountain5 21:34, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I personally think Ed would do well as an admin. Great temperament, skills, experience. Of course, if I were him I wouldn't say no to obtaining some more experience in admin areas... (-cough, cough-) but he would have my support. Icy // 22:08, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(out, @ everyone) - Three of those four GA's shouldn't be there - I have to merge them into Alaska-class cruiser (look at them...they are virtually them same (cut and pasted). Doesn't look so good now, eh? :)
Well, with the cries of "yes you can" flying around...I guess that I could try for it. Thanks everyone for your kind words (that I probably don't deserve :D). —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:30, 6 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Your RfA is in work. We'll (Tom and I) will provide the link here for you when we are ready for you to answer the questions and accept. -MBK004 02:38, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Thanks guys! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:39, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@ Ed: Go stuff yourself, Ed, if you think you're not good enough.
@ Pianista: J.delanoy passed his RfA (second one), at a time when life was much easier. A huggler wouldn't have a good chance of passing an RfA now without a lot of good contributions. But that doesn't affect Ed; he's experienced in a lot of areas in Wikipedia, so no problem. Chamal talk 02:40, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
LOL well then you can't say the same thing. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:42, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/The ed17 is ready for your acceptance and answers to the questions. After that let me know and I'll finish up the things needed and transclude to WP:RFA. Good luck! -MBK004 03:15, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck! This will be on my watch list until it passes, and if you have any questions feel free to ask me or MBK or anyone else you think may know. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:17, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One minor but important detail: just above the question is a line that say "candidate please indicate you accept the nom" or something to that effect. You need to write that you do accept before this can go out into the main page :) TomStar81 (Talk) 04:08, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done - was doing it when you messaged me, but I had to figure out how to word it. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 04:10, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One thing, remember to resist the urge to go oppose bashing, (which is our national sport according to Wehwalt on Cam's RfA. Responses in the discussion section to legitimate criticism like you have done is excellent. -MBK004 04:53, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

@ Ed: Schoolwork + new year of piano = chaos. :) Handfuls of upcoming competitions, exams, and stuff. My piano prof may be the coolest guy in town, but he doesn't leave time for me to breathe! And he does that intentionally - he told me so. :P So I'll be around only weekends, or maybe a few mins late a night if I can. That's all I can spare for now.
Hope everything goes well! Good night/morning/afternoon/evening to all of you. :) —La Pianista (TC) 06:15, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Going good right now, Ed! Good luck with it! But man, you haven't participated in XFDs? What the hell? I don't think some people would take very kindly to that. Chamal talk 12:51, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, The ed17. You have new messages at Townlake's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
I know you're probably a little down and out right now seeing how your RfA is progressing, but it might be best to look at it in the following way: You are receiving lots of advice and constructive criticism, and one of your nominators (Tom) had two RfAs before succeeding in his third. Your time may not be now but it will come. -MBK004 17:41, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with MBK. Besides, I think the chances are even better for a candidate the second/third time around. See, if you show how positively you can take constructive criticism and use it to mold yourself into a better admin candidate, you've shown the community more evidence of how ready you are for adminship. :) —La Pianista (TC) 19:51, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(going out the door right now) Thanks for the support, everyone...it means a lot. If it even had a chance after my stupidity in answering the PPOL questions, I royally screwed myself by just answering Koji's bait, I think. :)
But yes, both of you are entirely right. I see a few "you shouldn't have to wait 6 months" opposes/neutrals, so I can't be too far off; with the advice I'm getting, I should be able to get through my next RfA, I would think.
The only things that puzzle me are the (a) civility issues (when have I been really incivil?) and (b) the signature opposes. Otherwise, I can take the rest and try to improve my editing. Cheers everyone! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 22:21, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree on that - the civility part. Even when I was certain I had pushed you too far, you just don't explode. Arg. So good, you're bad. ;P
And, though perhaps your sig is hard to read for some of the hard-of-seeing folks (or those without ClearType installed), perhaps you might consider changing it if it's a concern. —La Pianista (TC) 00:38, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah...I guess that I probably should. :) I don't have time to play with fonts right now though; too many articles to work on. Maybe when I go back to college this weekend... —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:41, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently going to college is going to make you less busy, huh? Icy // 01:19, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your Rfa

Ed, I am going to be blunt. I do not think you are ready for adminship, so I have opposed.

NOT!
You've been a great adopter and I can see from the tally now that it is most probably going to pass. Remember me talking about you going for adminship in October? (Chit Chat Part 4) You said you weren't ready back then and I sort of forgot about it. Anyway good luck- I'm sure you will succeed! Yep, that was awhile back. :) I woulda have been ripped to shreds then though...look what is happening now! :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:35, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, leave it a few months, do lots of admin stuff and almost all the opposer's will support. You'll do it! (What do you think of it now? Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 22:31, 7 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Hopefully. :) It's looking a lot better, Ollie! Good job! (Maybe consider splitting it to "Railroads in Buckinghamshire"? I dunno...) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:57, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed - great job! I'm always baffled by the magic you article-builders can work...
And, Eddie... <span-style="text-decoration:blink;"><3. <British romance-novel accent>You try my reserve. I simply cannot...*leans back, near fainting*...why, I must support myself, I simply cannot bear it...Ah! ;P —La Pianista (TC) 01:02, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then get to work article-building yourself, you busy kid. :) You'll be less amazed. :P
I try! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:07, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll think about it. All the articles I want to write are about pieces that have hardly enough sources to be notable...and Google searches are fruitless. -_- —La Pianista (TC) 01:10, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch. Libraries are no help?
Saw that you are going out. Good luck with your piano! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:11, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Non. The local library just has old movies and romance novels... the only decent one is downtown, and I don't expect Mom to take hours out of her busy day to drive me there. >.>
Yep. Bai! Listen to this and think of me. ;) —La Pianista (TC) 01:14, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Google Books no help either? Ew, what are you trying to write about? :P
 Doing... :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:16, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I was to split the article into Railways in Buckinghamshire, what would I do with the railway section in the current transport page? Could I get two GA's! By the way, quadrupling refers to laying two more tracks next to the existing two tracks to give a four-track layout (for fast and slow trains). I've added a link so you can find out about it. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 13:14, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@ Ed: My pr0n Clean link, really...and ja, not much, but it's the only one in English. -_-
Actually, I was still thinking about that La Plus Que Lente by Debussy. There's even media for it at Commons. I think Google books is a good idea (why didn't I think of that?) I'll get to it when I can. :) —La Pianista (TC) 05:17, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(out, @ Ollie) - Summarize the the railway article in that section, and add a {{main}} tag to the top of that section.
(@ Pianista) - Remember to search on "limited and full preview only" :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 07:15, 9 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

No, you made the right descion. Its always better to correct and find out you were wrong than not correct and find out that what the other guy added was misinformation. I was converting the range for the guns since Cla68 pointed out that only USS Iowa ever fired a gun out to 24 nautical miles. After thinking about it, his point made sense: all the battleships should state 20 miles since that was the standard distance a 16-in shell was fired out to, with Iowa's record setting shot noted separately. TomStar81 (Talk) 06:06, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Yamato-class

You are correct that it is an extremely interesting topic (I'm aiming for an eventual FT). My sources are excellent in that they cover pretty much everything. That said, the articles on the individual ships (Yamato and Musashi) need sources with regards to their construction process (the one thing none of my sources touch on in great detail). If you have sources that cover that bit of the class, assistance in those areas would be GREATLY appreciated. Cam (Chat) 06:43, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I don't have sources like that (U.S. battleships and Conway's 1906-1921 only). =/ I could help with c/e'ing, common sense checking, and a background of the "treaty battleships". However, if I remember right, wasn't the construction of those ships some of the most secretive ever? I don't know if many sources, if any, will cover anything. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 06:51, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well there are sources out there (since the info was uncited before). If anything, I bet Cla68 has access to some excellent Japanese resources—I already signed him on to this thing, so you're not the first to be press-ganged into this project. Full speed ahead (which, for the Yamatos, means 27 knots;) Cam (Chat) 06:58, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Format Question

I need some help. I've been trying to use the approved formats like {{USS}} and {{Sclass}}. but every so often run into places where I can't figure out how to do it. I'm working on lead sections for Essex class carriers, and almost all of them have had several designations. You can see this well on the Franklin (CV-13) page. This ship was later classified as a CVA, then a CVS, and then as a AVT. I have used the "multiple quote" system because I didn't know how to do it correctly, but want to do it a better way if there is one. ThanksBusaccsb (talk) 01:49, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Either use the most common designations, or just go with a normal link (i.e. [[USS Shipname (ZZ-0)|USS Shipname (designations)]], I think... Cheers! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:57, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll play around with those. ThanksBusaccsb (talk) 07:16, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's getting there...

I've re-named it Railways in Buckinghamshire as you suggested. It's looking quite good although I'm only up to 1900 in the history section! Any suggestions you have about it now will be very much appreciated if you've got the time. I know the intro needs some references, but that can wait! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 01:57, 12 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

As long as the intro's information is contained and referenced in the main body of the article, no references are needed in it. :) I'll add suggestions when I can, but it is looking very good right now! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 02:01, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've got most of it done. I'm up to 1900 and most of the English railway network opened before then. So just 100 empty years to write up as well as some modern stuff, (and a huge copy edit!) and it'll be done. Thanks again. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 02:55, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! I didn't as much as I thought I would from that book becuase I don't know England's geography (place names, etc.), and it had much less history than I thought (it basically described the routes...only.) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 03:04, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's all of use! Anything describing a route can be used so thanks for your help. I've used a few books I remembered I had on the London Underground as well.
Your RfA ends tomorrow morning (Or this evening to you!) My earlier optimism will carry on to your next one should it fail (as I think it will, unfortunately). But never mind, you'll do fine next time. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 20:21, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, well next time I go home I will ping you and ask for help on London geography (I left the book @ home). Do you know how to use IRC? (IM'ing would be a LOT easier than back and forth Wikipedia edits)
Oh yeah it's gonna fail unless I get a support spree from some random place (fat chance). :))) O well; it doesn't affect my article-writing, so it's all good! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:25, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want me to make 20 socks and make them all support you? I'll do it if you want. I am being serious- I won't be caught. (I AM JOKING BY THE WAY. FOR ANYONE WITHOUT A SENSE OF HUMOUR, I AM NOT GOING TO CREATE ANY SOCK-PUPPETS!) Just in case.
I've heard about IRC but I don't really know what it is. Can you help? Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 20:36, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Lol save it for WP:EfD, pal. :D
Go to http://www.mibbit.com/chat/. Type in your name under "nick" (Delete the name that's already in there). Under channel type "#channel you want" (for example, #wikipedia-en-milhist). From the dropdown "IRC" menu at the top select "Freenode" (That's the server the wikipedia channels are on). Then click go and viola, you're in the channel and can start typing. Thanks to Patton for thisEd 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:39, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are you on it now? Can you type something! Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 20:47, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will be on later - have to go for now. =/ Jon Catalan should be on the milhist channel though... —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:49, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is that the channel you use? Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 20:52, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(out) Yeah lol :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:10, 13 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Hi. Have a nice dinner? I've made this diagram showing the railways of Buckinghamshire in 1906. Is it suitable for inclusion in the article? I'll try the IRC now. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 00:22, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you get the information that you used for the diagram? (you need (a) source(s)....like refs in an article) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:25, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's pieced together from the text and my personal geographical knowledge. Can I use the same sources as the main body of text? Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 00:59, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What about this. It's from 1961 when some of the network had closed but most of it is there. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 01:40, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just a heads up, this article doesn't have an infobox. There is one that is applicable, see the talk page where I put forth the suggestion. Most of the British naval guns have infoboxes but the American ones don't currently. I think I've mentioned it on the talk pages of those that lack it. Perhaps that is something you would be so inclined to fixing? -MBK004 20:43, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll start on it after dinner. :) Also, apologies for missing your inquiry on the talk page - I've been on and off quickly lately, and must have missed it on my watchlist. =/ —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:47, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I added one to Mark 8; they are rather annoying (why couldn't these guns just use one shell? ;) J/k, but you get my point. :)

Your RfA

I'm sorry, but I've closed your RfA as No Consensus.

However, the bulk of the opposition to your RfA rested on the fact that many people didn't feel you had quite enough experience with admin-related areas. I have very little doubt that, given a few months of additional work in those areas, my next "Your RfA" message will be totally different. ;) EVula // talk // // 05:18, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks EVula; I knew that it was going to go that way for a bit anyway with the large number of opposes!
...and yet more thanks for the inspiring message, friend. :) Cheers, —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:25, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Take the oppositions points to heart and see if you can get more active in admin-related work, and in...oh say April or May - if you would still like to be an admin - I will renominate you. You have the skills and the brains to be an admin, if you can address a few of the oppositions problems then you should pass the next rfa. TomStar81 (Talk) 05:29, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will try, but no guarantees...I <3 my article work a lot. :) Also Tom, could you look here at the bottom? I replied to you :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:31, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c × 2) Yep. And I will most certainly be there, whenev. :) Don't feel like you have to run again if you don't want to, though. I've seen too many users simply retire after adminship, since, I think, they felt obligated to the wiki. And, if I may add, obligation is the direct enemy of the 'holism. It's human nature - you'll love to do something until it becomes your job. —La Pianista (TC) 05:33, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks guys :) I once felt like I had no friends whether in RL or online (well, to be fair, at that point I had no internet access); now I feel like I have too many! I'm totally, completely and utterly blessed to have people like my RL friends and you guys on here, even though I don't know your full identities :))) I don't think that I even could be depressed right now... :D Thank you all so very much, —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:39, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're very welcome. I luv ma peeps (which, unfortunately, includes you), too. ;) —La Pianista (TC) 05:42, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"unfortunately"? I'm hurt. :DEd 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:43, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately for you, I mean. How sad it is to be bound to a lady always sky high on some mysterious piano-related rocks; with a sassy, coquettish attitude, finishing approximately 75% of her posts with a raspberry (:P); and who is willing to destroy anything that gets in the way of her passionate klavierlust, even if it means her other lust? —La Pianista (TC) 05:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that makes sense now. The only thing I see that might be wrong there is the percentage; I'd go to 35% :P, 25% :D, and 10% :D :D :D. (Yes, I know that pianos < than me. =]) Anyway...g'nite everyone. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:49, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just as an aside, I totally agree with La Pianista; as much as I'd love to see us gain another content-savvy administrator, it does often come at the expense of content work. I've been fairly fortunate that, even after my sysop and 'crat flags, a full 1/3rd of my edit count is in the main article namespace.
Regardless of what you do, however, have fun. If that means focusing on just article work and not submitting an RfA, so be it; your well-being should never be placed second to a website's needs. :) EVula // talk // // 05:50, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that is lucky. :) Well, I wasn't going through RfA to become a full-time admin; it was to help people who needed it every once in awhile at WT:MILHIST, WT:NOVELS and here. Maybe I'll go through it again in a few months, and maybe not. W/e...it is not a big deal to me at all (it's an aside or a side note). :D Thanks EVula! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 05:54, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's up to you, but if you'd like for me or any of the people who do a lot of nominating at RFA to peek over your shoulder a few times over the next 3 months, it's very likely you can pass an RFA 3 months from now. There's no need for you to change your focus, your focus is fine; just learn a little and participate a little in a few new areas that interest you. Best of luck and continued success at MILHIST. - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 16:33, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, ah, sure? I think that I might participate more at AfD and maybe AN/I. Thanks Dan; it means a lot. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:08, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I toolllllddd youuuu soooooo!!!! Okay, screw that. I couldn't help it. -cackle- Anyways, I'm sorry. I really disagreed with some of the opposers. But some of them had points, and those are the ones you should listen to. Ja. Icy // 21:22, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
LOL I was waiting for something like this... :) Thanks Icy, <3 ya as always (:D), —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 23:10, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, sorry your RfA failed. There's always next time, though! And it's definitely time to archive... your page is 126 kilobytes long! :) LittleMountain5 00:33, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, same idea here. Apart from the signature, civility stuff, I guess the opposes did have a point. I hope there will be a next time? Chamal talk 00:40, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Eventually maybe probably. :)
(@civility) Did anyone else see what Wehwalt but here? Slightly hypocritical, IMHO, but... I shouldn't complain much. Someone will oppose me next time around.... Yes, I may be a little annoyed about the civility opposes...Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 00:48, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry - I share your...(is this the right word?) "civil"...annoyance. I mean, even the most pious and cool-headed people say regrettable things every once in a while.
Just be glad that a great many folks out there think you'll stand a chance if you try again. Mind! I'm not badgering you into doing it - just letting you know that if you try again in a few months, after a bit more experience in adminly areas, the weather will be in your favor. Mah too pennyz. ;) —La Pianista (TC) 06:12, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commiserations

Hi, I know what it feels like. So have a beer, relax a bit and try and focus on all the things you enjoy about this weird place, as well as the nice things your supporters said. WereSpielChequers 14:33, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, hey...you need something to eat with that drink:
And I'll be there for you when you hit RfA again! Ecoleetage (talk) 16:52, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
LOL you guys are both dorks. WSC, I'm relaxed; it wasn't a big deal to me, though I did like some of the positive comments I got (I'm addicted to positive reinforcement now! :O)
Eco, I'm disappointed - I don't see the word "queue" in that. ;D Anyway, thanks for the support guys :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:14, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for 12"/50 caliber Mark 8 gun

Updated DYK query On 14 January, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article 12"/50 caliber Mark 8 gun, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Gatoclass (talk) 16:17, 14 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Hey, Ed, I've got a question about the 12"/50: do you have a figure for muzzle velocity? That might be a helpful bit of information, if you can dig it up (compare with BL 12 inch Mk XI - XII naval gun). Parsecboy (talk) 17:00, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See here, middle of the page. Which one of the six? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:07, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would probably use the numbers for the full charge on both the AP and HC shells in the infobox, but you could quite easily include all 6 figures in the text. Maybe something like "The gun could be loaded with both AP and HC shells, and could use several different propellant loads...The standard full charge produced...while the reduced flashless charge propelled the AP shell at...and the HC shell..." Parsecboy (talk) 17:14, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alright; I will add that to the article in about 3 hours...after my classes, when I get back to my room. ;) (in class now :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:18, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I s'pose I could've done it myself, but I too need to dash off to class. History of the Roman Republic: good times. Parsecboy (talk) 17:26, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
