In the Water Margin, Wei Ding-guo the 'Fire General' together with Shan Ting-gui were the fearsome commanders of the Lingzhou Prefecture. The evil premier Cai had called upon to repel the Liangshan heroes led by Song Jiang, but like many of their predecessors, Wei and Shan were defeated and were so impressed with the heroes' righteousness that they too, joined Song and his men. It was always a wonderful sight when Wei, in his fire-red armour, emerged on the battlefield together with Shan in black. These two commanders were also instrumental in the capture and recruitment of their former superior, Guan Sheng.
