If you want an open text encyclopedia, have an open text encyclopedia. If you want to ban people because they weren't nice to people you prefer, than call it an invitational encyclopedia.
I have left because of the recent discussion over whether NightCrawler should be banned. The real reason for banning him seems to be that he may have offended a user the sysops prefer (one who, I believe, never complained about NightCrawler's behaviour). The ostensible reasons are that stylistic similarities show him to be the demonic DW and that his IP address is close to DW's.
However, the stylistic similarities are not to be revealed, and no one will explain to me how you can evaluate the implications of proximity of an IP address without knowing the geographical distribution of Wikipedia users. And NightCrawler is also supposed to be Jacques Delson, who is also supposed to be DW, and NightCrawler's and Jacques Delson's styles are definitely not similar.
To my mind people should be banned for persistent vandalism, persistent violation of copyright, or some other behaviour that threatens the integrity of the encyclopedia. The preoccupation of the sysops with unnecessary bans is just too arbitrary for me, and probably counterproductive for the encyclopedia.
But even I have been known to be wrong. Have fun if I am.
I include the following link to my main website show that I am not DW, either (the idea that I was he once had its devoted followers here).
