Navarro College is also home to the Cook Education Center [1] which houses a planetarium, with a 60-foot diameter dome and seating for 200 [2], and the Pearce Collections Museum [3].

The Corsicana campus has strong ties with Texas A & M – Commerce which has a branch at the Navarro college main campus in Corsicana. [4]

History

Navarro College was founded in Navarro County, Texas after the end of World War II. The US had enacted the GI bill. This legislation promised funds for education of servicemen who had served in the war. Local citizens formed the college and authorized a county tax to build and found the college.

In order to better serve the local community which included students from several Texas counties including Navarro, Ellis, Freestone, Limestone, and Leon, the school opened satellite campuses. The Waxahachie and Mexia campuses were established in the 1970s, and a new campus was added in Midlothian Texas in the 2000s.

The Cook Education Center

In 1997 the Cook Education Center was built at the Corsicana campus, and now houses a 200 seat Planetarium as well as the Pearce Collections .

Campus Offerings

Navarro college is a two-year college specializing in certificates and Associates degrees, and distinguishes itself from other community colleges by having its own dormitories. This makes it a popular destination for foreign students who wish to enter US four-year colleges but have not met the requirements for direct entry. Navarro also offers Dual-credit programs that allow High school students to get college credit before graduating.

Navarro college offers general coursework needed for transfer to four-year college including English, History, Fine Art, and a number of Sciences as well as offering a Fire Academy, a Police Academy and a Nursing school. Graduates of Navarro can move on to most four-year universities, and some continue their education at Texas A & M – Commerce which itself has a branch on Navarro's Corsicana Campus.

Accreditation

Navarro is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The accreditation was given in 1954 and reaffirmed in 1964, 1974, 1985, 1995 and again in 2006.
