Grovyle (ジュプトル, Juputoru, Juptile in original Japanese language versions) is a fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise.

Grovyle's name is most likely a portmanteau of grove or mangrove and reptile; its name could also be derived from "grow", indicating the growth of plants. Its Japanese name is likely a portmanteau of the Japanese word for arbor (樹木, jūmoku) and the English word reptile.

Biological characteristics

Grovyle's appearance is styled after that of the gecko. It also looks similar to the velociraptor. It is a green lizard with a pink underbelly broken by a strip of green near its waist, which resembles a belt. Long, streaming leaves stem from its wrists, the top of its head, and its posterior.

The leaves that grow out of Grovyle's body, as well as its matching green coloration, provide excellent camouflage against the background of its native habitats, the forests and jungles. These leaves that grow on its arms seem to allow Grovyle to use the move Leaf Blade.[1]

Even if spotted, Grovyle has little trouble escaping danger. Its powerful thigh muscles make it very adept at climbing trees and jumping from branch to branch very quickly, disappearing into the forest and eluding its pursuers.[1]

In the video games

Grovyle are notable in the Pokémon video games for evolving from one of the three species of Pokémon from which the player can choose at the start of their adventure in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and EmeraldTreecko, who evolves into Grovyle at level 16.[1]

Grovyle's greatest assets are its Speed and Special Attack, while its low Hit Points and Defense make it a fragile Pokémon, especially against physical attacks.[2] As a Grass-type Pokémon, Grovyle can learn powerful Grass-type attacks such as Leaf Blade and Solar Beam.

In the anime

Grovyle first appeared in episode #317 of the Pokémon anime, "What You Seed Is What You Get", assisting a trainer in guarding fields of watermelon. At first, Ash and company are perceived as thieves, having been caught eating watermelons found floating down the river. Grovyle battles Ash's Treecko, helping Treecko master the Bullet Seed attack in the process.

Ash's Treecko evolves into a Grovyle in episode #342, "Exploud and Clear". Its personality does not change much; Grovyle is as much of a loner as Treecko was, and it loves the challenge of a battle. It also habitually keeps a twig in its mouth, although larger than the one it used to keep as a Treecko. When Ash returns to Kanto to take the Battle Frontier challenge, Grovyle is one of the Pokémon he takes with him. Ash continues to use Grovyle until its evolution into Sceptile.

Grovyle is also one of the Pokémon used by Ash in his battle with Norman, the Petalburg City Gym Leader. A very tenacious Pokémon, the near-defeat Grovyle manages to knock out Norman's Slaking through the use of the ability Overgrow.
