The Chronicles of Sasoke?

I have been unable to find any information about this film, most search results link to wikipedia or discussions regarding the wikipedia article. Is there any actual information about this film or is it a hoax? Kjarl Dreadnought (talk) 20:33, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Toshio Suzuki is the president

It should be included that Toshio Suzuki is studio ghibli's chief producer and president! he is an important member of the studio; thanks mainly to his efforts in getting films like Nausicaa made and jointly founding the studio with miyazaki and Takahata! The studio is becoming independant [1] by next march, breaking free of shoten and setting up with miyazaki, suzuki as members of the board. Nausicaa did not begin in animage, Toshio Suzuki used animage to pitch Nausicaa as it was originally rejected for not being based on existing manga, which at the time seemed like a bad idea to the japanese film industry. in the final sentence it should also be noted that animage ran so many articles on studio ghibli because Toshio Suzuki (he was a writer and eventually editor of animage) had become so involved with the studio. Toshio Suzuki originally published articles on Miyazaki's work after seeing the The Castle of Cagliostro. I can get more information, japanese documentaries place much heavier importance on Suzuki's role in the studio than the linked italien history site appears to. The documentaries i have seen are made by friends of studio ghibli and are included on some ghibli film dvds. If no-one objects i would like to rework the current paragraphs and write a little more history based on these accounts. will also look into adding the pronunciation which is Ji-bliDiscordance 02:16, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Studio Ghibli Films Template

I just created the template on the bottom of the page with the Ghibli films. For the pre-Ghibli flms I only includes Hols, Cagliostro, and Nausicaa became most of all the other "Pre" films are really only topcraft films, and really wern't either major films for Takahata/Miyazaki (Hols/Lupin) or started Ghibli (Nausicaa). For the Short Films, I only put the major four, but I think we can add the others, once they get a page for them, but until, I do not think we need to put any other shorts. Casey14 23:02, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Listed under "Animation Studios" category?

Shouldn't Studio Ghibli be also listed there? I see other anime production companies (such as Gonzo, Bones, and Gainax), yet no Ghibli.

Yes, go ahead and add it to the category. --nihon 22:04, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

What are people's opinions on the logo? My impression is that the new smaller logo with bright blue background looks a lot worse in the article than the previous b/w logo [2], but I would like to know what other people think before going ahead reverting it. --Pasky 13:27, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

I actually like the blue logo. I think it works well in the article. --日本穣 21:07, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

The logo background is extremely oversaturated compared to the rendering of DVDs containing this logo. My opinion? It looks tacky, and looks like it came from a 1990s web page.--Rfsmit 01:43, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Pronunciation

Sorry its not policy but its part of the style guide, basically a non-native english speaker cant read pronunciations not in IPA, dialects are also a problem, IPA is the only accurate way of writing down the sound of the word. Discordance 23:00, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

The unfortunate thing is that 99% of the people out there have no clue how to read IPA or any other pronunciation guide. (^_^) --日本穣 05:32, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

The IPA page has some fairly handy links though, its not too hard to pick up on. I fully agree with the style guide, the english dictionary style pronunciations arnt good enough and if people have to learn some IPA to understand then good. Its ashame the individual sounds cant be linked at the moment, that would probably be the best way to help people understand the pronunciation. Discordance 05:44, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm a native English speaker, and I often find English-style pronunciation guides so ambiguous as to be useless. Anyone with an interest in matters outside the Anglosphere can at least take a minute to learn the international vowels. —Tamfang 04:14, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Game

I remember reading in Edge about a PlayStation2 game Ghibli co-produced in which you draw your own fighting characters. I don't know if anyone here know anything more about it, a name might be helpful, but I think it should be included on the Ghibli page.

DVD Collection Numbers

I notice that someone has added these numbers next to the film titles in the list of Ghibli films - for example, 7 for Howl's Moving Castle, 15 for Earthsea, 3 for Porco Rosso - these appear on the spines of the DVDs released here in the UK by Optimum, but I have absolutely no idea what they refer to. I've considered everything; the order in which they were made, alphabetical, alphabetical by their original Japanese titles, but none of these fit. I keep them on my shelf in the order they were made, and these numbers are confusing the hell out of me! Does anyone know just what they mean and why they've put them on the DVDs?Liquidcow (talk) 18:48, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I guess the numbers relate to the order in which the DVD's have been releases. Nothing more and nothing less. 10:41, 31 March 2008

they only relate to when the dvd's were released to confirm. 78.32.59.185 (talk) 18:33, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Grave of Fireflies vs Spirited Away

Is it correct to refer to Grave of Fireflies" as "The most famous and lauded film from the studio" when, at least for many Westerners, "Spirited Away" is much more well known than GoF? I would have thought being the first anime to win an Oscar would give SA a little more status. (217.33.68.72 (talk) 08:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC))

Why is the sex of the protagonists relevant?

There is a list of the Ghibli movies in the Works section that lists six basic facts about each movie. One of them is "Sex of lead character" and that doesn't seem very relevant. At least, I can't remember seeing a single filmography list the sex of the lead characters before this.

Wouldn't budget, revenue, or original title be more appropriate in such a list?

Agreed. This information is irrelevant to that section; as such, I have removed it. I feel it would be better to place it within each film's own article if it really is that important. Innocenceisdeath (talk) 19:14, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
It has been discussed in many articles and books that Miyazaki is known for very often having a female protagonist, so that's likely why it was included here. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:29, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Financial problems

"Cut Magazine has an interview with Hayao Miyazaki where the venerable animator confesses that if their upcoming Arietty the Borrower doesn’t do well in the box office, plans are already in place to shut down Studio Ghibli.

'Suzuki-san is making a dissolution program for Ghibli. No joke, we talked about it the other day. For example, Ghibli should be able to continue with about five staff members as a copyright management company even if we smash the studio. So, Ghibli can say ‘We stop film production. Goodbye’. I do not have to be there.'

Topcraft and the Pre-Ghibli works

I removed the (ridiculous) mentioning of Thundercats as a Pre-Ghibli work. From what I gather the show was produced by "Pacific Animation Corporation" which included at least 3 former Topcraft employees, of which one also worked as an animator on Nausicaa. Having a single member among the staff in common with a Ghibli film is probably not enough to note it on this page unless we also add the maybe hundreds of other productions that could meet the same criteria...

I think the rest of the non-Nausicaa Topcraft productions can be removed for the same reason. Topcraft members who worked on N. might have continued working at Ghibli but they are not the same thing and the staff of these earlier productions don't match up with Ghibli's to a significant enough degree (if at all) to be worth mentioning here.

For English information on Topcraft see http://xoomer.virgilio.it/fedgrame/english.htm Giitah (talk) 22:44, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Although Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was released before the founding of the studio. It has since then been released outside Japan / re-released with full Ghibli and Disney credentials. It should now be regarded as the actual first feature film by Ghibli Studios. Furthermore the claim of just being "often considered" as a Ghibli production should be removed. I specifically make no such claim for Cagliostro. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.129.106.43 (talk) 10:43, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Ghibli and Disney

What is the relation between Studio Ghibli and Disney these days? I found this website http://disney-studio.jp/ghibli/ which seems to suggest that Ghibli's works are not only internationally distributed by Disney, but also within Japan, at least for the video market. Is Studio Ghibli formally independent? -- 77.184.170.5 (talk) 12:37, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Studio Ghibli is an independent company which has a distribution agreement with Disney in a large number of countries around the world. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:23, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
Within Japan, many if not most Ghibli works are distributed by either Toei or Toho, c.f. the specific Wikipedia page for each film. Codewyrds (talk) 03:23, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Note that Disney is but one of many licensees of Studio Ghibli works in various regions throughout the world; and was responsible for a few of the US English voice dubs (including some which replaced existing English language dubs already produced by other studios; e.g. both Castle In The Sky and Arrietty both have alternate English language voice dubs). These dubs are then often then re-integrated into the Japanese and some other distributions, licensed back from Disney. Codewyrds (talk) 03:23, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Most significantly to the US market, note that Disney is not the only distributor of Ghibli's works. Theatrical distribution of film for some 13 early works are distributed by GKids, while Disney retains the home dvd/bd distribution channel. See http://www.gkids.tv/ghibli/ and specifically note that GKids, rather than Disney, has licensed all US distribution rights to From Up On Poppy Hill from Studio Ghibli's own English dub of this film, for US release in March of 2013; see http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-06-05/gkids-to-release-ghibli-from-up-on-poppy-hill-film-in-n-america Codewyrds (talk) 03:23, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I just edited the international distribution paragraph to reflect some of Ghibli's international partners, especially Wild Bunch (which was credited as part of Arrietty's Production Committee), which handles international sales (probably where Studio Ghibli doesn't have a relationship already). It is difficult finding information on how Studio Ghibli's distribution agreements work, so I removed most of the points that assert that Disney has the global rights to Studio Ghibli films (which it doesn't seem to have). Jonyyeh (talk) 04:17, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Significant Achievements

The "Significant Achievements" section is a little odd; the achievements it lists are all basically "the first time Studio Ghibli did so and so". None of them are achievements in the sense of "The first studio to be completely successful overseas". While Princess Mononoke was the first Ghibli film to use computer animation, it is not the first anime film to have used computer animation, hence, it's not really an achievement. Regardless of whether the current things listed in that section are notable achievements, the current phrasing is definitely very odd and not consistent with the section title. Digital production

http://web.archive.org/web/20060909041047/http://www.imagica.com/Galette/English/interview.html

Q. Could you tell me the reason why you needed Galette™ in this film production, from the point of Studio Ghibli's animation making history?
A. "Pom Poko" was the first feature-film where we created the animation digitally, and we did a few cuts in this film.
Then we tried to process digitally one sequence for "Whisper of the Heart". The purpose was to inspect how much we could use a computer for multi-layer composition compared to a conventional optical composition method, and we choose -Kodak's Cineon™ system. We scanned shooting film with a film scanner, extracted the mat and then did a final composition. Then we finished this work with the Kodak Cineon™ film recorder. Cineon™ is a total system from film-input to film-output, but we were not satisfied -with the color control to match this film to a shooting film.
In the case of "Princess Mononoke", we built a CG department and then did a digital composition of 150 cuts. This time, the main part of this feature film was shot by film and a main point was how to match digital scenes to shooting film. After consulting with IMAGICA and considering a method how to match these, they adjusted the data to make the film match the original film, which was digitized with film scanner and then recorded with a film recorder. We are almost satisfied with this quality.
"My Neighbors the Yamadas" became the first all digital feature animation film. But "digital" means a great deal of work even after the finishing touches, and we do a hand-writing of a movement of the character and background even now.
...Since we had an idea to do a final output in 10-bit log file, we installed a Cineon™ workstation.Since "My Neighbors the Yamadas" is a special piece of work which we tried to reappear watercolor touch to film, we had a difficult time matching the CRT monitors to print film. At this moment, we thought that this difficulty must have been caused from a special characteristic of this water painting touch.

Then, we did a color control of short film specified for Ghibli's new museum on Cineon's monitor. But it took much more time than we expected, and we encountered the same problem from of "My Neighbors the Yamadas". Actually, we did a color correction at the time of input and output, repeated trial and error process many times, and checked print film. If we had a film recorder and film development equipment, the situation was different, but we had to deliver the data to IMAGICA and it took time. We began to think that if we had to continually repeat this process, we could not meet the deadline of "Spirited Away". What should I do ? (laughing) Then we told IMAGICA our problem

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a Ghibli Film

Now, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is considered as part of Studio Ghibli's catalog and it's considered the first film from Ghibli. Technically, Nausicaä is from Topcraft studio but officially Nausicaä is from Studio Ghibli. In Japan, its original country, is considered Ghibli films like United States, United Kingdom, Spain, all Latin American countries, France, Germany, Canada, Australia. Then, why is the problem for to include Nausicaä in Ghibli films? There are references where Nausicaä is considered Ghibli film: Tokuma and Ghibli considered "Nausicaä" as part Ghibli Collection, Madman: Ghibli Collection "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", Disney considered "Nausicaä" as part Ghibli Collection--Blitz Lutte (talk) 10:59, 22 September 2011 (UTC) 10:58, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Removal of Rotten Tomatoes Ratings

My apologies if this was covered elsewhere, but why were the Rotten Tomatoes ratings removed from the infobox listing all of the Studio Ghibli films? I actually liked this feature, and used it to determine which film I'd watch next! Wiki4Life (talk) 08:27, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. I am thinking that we should incorporate this into a critical reception section and add a box office section where necessary in the article. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 21:55, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I agree that there should be a critical reception section. I don't think Rotten Tomatoes Ratings should be included in the infobox because the ratings can be objective based on the viewer. Changes to the film table

I think that the distributor field should go from the table. If I was studio, I could understand, but distributors are distributors, not particularly crucial. I also think the producers field should be listed to just producers only and we should also add a Music section. To avoid confusion, the writers should be changed to screenplay, the people who represent what got onto the screen since the article gives an overview of those films and their respective articles can and does go into greater detail about that stuff. The Japanese wiki states they have ¥10,000,000 (1000万円) in capital/common stock (資本金), not revenue (which makes sense now that they are a KK). It also states they have net income (純利益) of ¥1,426,000,000 (14億2600万円), total equity (純資産) of ¥8,350,000,000 (83億5000万円), and total assets (総資産) of ¥15,770,000,000 (157億7000万円). Changes to the Film Name Titles

I modified the 2013 release titles to conform to the now-current English naming convention for those titles, which has evolved on the specific film Wikipedia pages since they were first added here. It would seem premature still to retitle the actual pages from the romanji names until they are formally named by Ghibli (or their English licensee). I hope I did so correctly, as a new editor, any feedback is welcome. Codewyrds (talk) 03:50, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

This raised another question to me - because the romanji names are often used interchangeably by some English speaking commentators, is it sensible to *also* record the romanji names in the table, as well as alternate titles? As examples; The Wind Is Rising (Kaze Tachinu) and The Secret World of Arrietty (Kari-gurashi no Arietti) (The Borrower Arrietty) (Arrietty) - all of which would be correct between the US, JP and UK distributions, respectively. Codewyrds (talk) 03:50, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Does anyone have stats on the start up costs and original employee count for the Studio in its first few months? Who financed the Studio and with how much capital? Who are right now the majority shareholders in it?

How much roughly does Miyazaki and the other key people earn each year?

And who owns the copyright to the Studio Ghibli movies, characters and screenplays? Is it the Studio itself or the writers?

about the logo of studio Ghibli in infobox

It may be a trivial thing, but looks weird for Japanese natives. You can see Japanese letters on the log says スタジオジブリ作品, but it should be スタジオジブリ. You can see スタジオジブリ version of this logo on official web site. The Latin letter below says "STUDIO GHIBLI", there is nothing wrong at all. However the Japanese letters "スタジオジブリ作品" can be translated into "studio ghibli products". So this logo is a logo used on packages of studio ghibli products such as DVDs and books.--Akiyama(tentative) (talk) 10:58, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Most of the audience of the English Wikipedia is not Japanese natives, so that really isn't a huge consideration. However, you are correct about the wording in the log. Since this image is an SVG, we need someone with the ability to edit SVGs to fix it. I'm sure we can find someone to do so. I would do it, but I am unfamiliar with editing SVGs. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:25, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

Should we include the co-op works in the main article? Some of them are have a pretty thin association with Ghibli and one doesn't even have an article, but I understand why people would want to see The Red Turtle. Perhaps add a "Other notable works" section or something where we could cherry-pick items? Nausicaa could fit in there too. Isa (talk) 22:30, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

No, listing the main films is good enough. Perhaps we can add a hidden note like we have for Nausicaa. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:50, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Why Ocean Waves does not appear in the list of feature films? (Lampurcias (talk) 03:47, 13 November 2017 (UTC))

Because it's a television film. It's listed in that section. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:49, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Should we make new list for short-films? With info when and where they have been aired and where they can be seen and other similar info like in the other one. "House Hunting" and "Mon Mon the Water Spider" have been mentioned in the page and there's at least two more ("Mei and the Kittenbus" and "Mr. dough and the egg princess") or even more short films released. Adding more information for co-productions

Shouldn't there be more information about the various co-production films, such as with Red Turtle? Such as more information on the collaboration, which production company did what. It would give people more knowledge on how much Studio Ghibli contributed to these other moviesLoki2727 (talk) 19:40, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

That kind of information goes in the article about the film (or other work). Including it here would make this article huge. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:50, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Nausicaa

I can see that Nausicaa has been added back to the table of Ghibli films. Regardless of its inclusion in official websites it was not animated by Studio Ghibli and pre-dates the studio, being animated by Topcraft. The earlier revision made more sense, listing it as a predecessor immediately above the table but not including it. There has already been discussion of this in this very talk page. ERAGON (talk) 19:28, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Just removed it. As a note, the more comprehensive List of Studio Ghibli works does not include it either, but rather has it in a separate related works section along with Cagliostro and so forth. --ERAGON (talk) 19:41, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

The Music of Studio Ghibli

The music of Studio Ghibli is incredibly important to the reception of the films both within Japan and internationally. As well as this, there is a unique way Miyazaki and Hisaishi work together to create the music for the films, as discussed in: Bellano, Marco. "From Albums to Images: Studio Ghibli's Image Albums and Their Impact on Audiovisual Strategies." Trans (Online) (2012): 2-16. Web. Trashbagwithaface (talk) 05:15, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

I was wondering something similar, it seems Studio Ghibli mu
sic on Spotify has over a million likes, Studio Ghibli music is used on the extremely popular youtube channel Cafe BGM and so I would tend to think the music has formed its own genre akin to the visual style, and is thus noteworthy in perhaps showing soundtrack charts, awards and cultural influence. @Imaginatorium: You reverted an edit I made recaptioning this:

...from "logo" to "wordmark".

Your explanation was "does not meet definition of wordmark".

Wikipedia's own definition of "wordmark" is:

A wordmark [...] is a distinct text-only typographic treatment of the name of a product, service, company, organization, or institution which is used for purposes of identification and branding.

...while the definition of "logo" is:

A logo [...] is a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol used to aid and promote public identification and recognition.

The image I recaptioned consists solely of text, and contains no graphics. Also, the infobox says *this* image, which does contain a graphic, is Studio Ghibli's logo:

File:Studio Ghibli logo.svg

Given that, the image I recaptioned seems to very clearly be a wordmark, not a logo.

Can you elaborate on why you disagree?

Stephen Hui (talk) 16:31, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, I did not check carefully which image you were looking at. I was looking at the "Logo" (not really much of a logo, is it?) at the top, which has a dreamy sketch of Totoro with the caption スタジオジブリ (Studio Ghibli). But I missed the lower "wordmark", which indeed is text only, but has the different caption スタジジブリ作品 ("Studio Ghibli product"), which is again not quite a wordmark for "Studio Ghibli". In the end these are reduplicative, so I agree with your decision to remove it. Imaginatorium (talk) 05:16, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
