Predate

It has become used in this sense relatively recently, since the 1940s, and mostly by Americans, but it is really just sloppy writing. It is accepted by Oxford because that is how it has come to be used by some people. It's use with respect to predation leads to vagaries, and there are perfectly good alternative words that could be used when discussing this. A number of the corrections I have made are because you honestly can't tell what the heck the writer is trying to say, which seems to be a common trait among people who use 'predate' in terms of 'predation'. --Thedugganaut (talk) 00:45, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
