Faculty of Medicine UKM
The Faculty of Medicine of The National University of Malaysia (UKM) was established in 1972[1] to increase the number of doctors in the country. This goal is also in line with the people's aspirations to create a national medical institution based on Bahasa Malaysia as an intermediate language. The first dean Dr. Amir Abbas was appointed and began his duties from May 30, 1972, until May 29, 1975. Despite space constraints, administrative tasks were still completed in the government house of Dr. Amir Abbas who has been made a temporary administrative office. The administrative office was relocated to Jalan Masjid in Petaling Jaya and later to Jalan Travers in Brickfields.
In May 1973, the pre-medical course was started at the Faculty of Science in Jalan Pantai Baru. Studies at UKM's Faculty of Medicine began with the admission of the first group of students in the 1973/1974 session with a total of 44 students. To meet the needs of studies, the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) was declared a Teaching Hospital for the UKM Faculty of Medicine by YB Tan Sri Lee Siok Yew, who was the Minister of Health at the time. With that declaration, all clinical programs at the Faculty of Medicine are officially conducted at HKL. The students can gain experience in a leading hospital in the country.
The UKM Faculty of Medicine's development phase witnessed another shift when the desire to have its building became a reality. The UKM Faculty of Medicine received a piece of land from the Malaysian government located on Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, Kuala Lumpur, close to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) and the Institute of Medical Research. This building was completed and fully usable in 1979. DYMM Tuanku Ja'afar Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus has agreed to inaugurate this building.
Once again, the UKM Faculty of Medicine made history when for the first time it celebrated its first graduates in the Convocation Ceremony of the First Group of UKM Faculty of Medicine Graduates in 1979. In this historic ceremony, 37 students were successfully awarded Doctor of Medicine degrees. This success further became a booster when a postgraduate program was offered to students to produce medical experts in the 1981/1982 session. This postgraduate program has been pioneered by the Master of Surgery (General Surgery), Master of Surgery (Orthopedic), Master of Medical Science, and Doctor of Philosophy.
In 1993, UKM established a teaching hospital known as Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). HUKM became fully operational in 1997, further boosting the development of UKM's Faculty of Medicine. This development at the same time demands the construction of a building for the preclinical departments of the UKM Faculty of Medicine placement. Located at UKM Cheras Campus, this 18-storey building was fully operational in 2014.
Faculty of Medicine UKM now stands as one of the leading medical education institutions in this country. Apart from being the center of focus for local students, international students from various countries also choose UKM's Faculty of Medicine to pursue their higher education and enhance their expertise.
