"'Dharmaraj Cheralathan"' (born 21 April 1975) is an Indian professional Kabaddi player. He was a member of the India national kabaddi team that won the gold medal in World Kabbadi games in 2016.[1]

Dharmaraj has played for 18 years at national and international level.

He has represented India, and Railways, and is a member of the Kabaddi hall of fame with 9 Gold medals at events including: the Kabaddi National Championship, the SA Games and the Asian Beach Games.

Dharmaraj won Gold at the Asian Beach Games and also won a Gold Medal for India at the 2010 South Asian Games.[2]

Early and Personal Life

He hails from Tamil Nadu, comes from a family of farmers. Cheralathan has three siblings that include two sisters. “Farming was all that was important to me while growing up. Even my brother is a farmer. We spent a lot of our young days working in the fields.”[3]

The 42-year-old has a son as well. Cheralathan’s brother D Gopu is also a hot property in the Pro Kabaddi League and is a defender just like his brother. This season, Gopu will be seen playing for Dabang Delhi.


He said in the interview to sportskeeda that "He started playing Kabaddi at an early age and enjoyed playing it. He never thought it would bring me to this stage.”[3]

Pro Kabbadi League

The 42-year-old defender is a veteran of the league who has played for Bengaluru Bulls and Telugu Titans before this season and was bought by Patna Pirates in the auctions ahead of the 4th season.[3]

Cheralathan was a sensation in the strong Bengaluru Bulls defence in the first season, wowing everyone with his ankle holds and his cool head under pressure. At the age of 42, Cheralathan has managed to keep his fitness intact which makes him one of the most agile men in the tournament.

Cheralathan went for 29 lakhs in the auctions for season 4. Went on with landed the job of skipper for Patna Pirates in season 4.

Dharmaraj Cheralathan won the Pro Kabaddi Season 4 title with the Patna Pirates [4].he is one of the valuable player in season 5.
