Mid Dome was the source of an experiment regarding land erosion. In the late 1960s due to on going land erosion [[wilding pines]] were planted as a proposed solution to this. The solution carried out as desired, with the pines spreading quickly over the western slopes of the mountain. In the early 1990s it was noted the the pines were spreading beyond control and effort was established in the early 2000s to try to control them. Since that time aerial spraying of the pines has been undertaken and decreased the area covered by the pines. |

Mid Dome (1478m) is a prominent mountain in the northern Southland region that overlooks the Waimea plains. Surrounding farms at the base of the of the mountain in fact make up the original East Dome station which lies to the east of the Mid Dome.
Mid Dome was the source of an experiment regarding land erosion. In the late 1960s due to on going land erosion wilding pines were planted as a proposed solution to this. The solution carried out as desired, with the pines spreading quickly over the western slopes of the mountain. In the early 1990s it was noted the the pines were spreading beyond control and effort was established in the early 2000s to try to control them. Since that time aerial spraying of the pines has been undertaken and decreased the area covered by the pines.
