Kappa Delta (ΚΔ) was the first sorority founded at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University), in Farmville, Virginia. It is one of the "Farmville Four" sororities founded at the university. (The others are Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha; a clock tower at the university campus with a clock face representing each sorority is dedicated to the four).
Kappa Delta has over 230,000 members, more than 14,000 undergraduate members in 149 active collegiate chapters. Kappa Delta also has more than 510 chartered alumnae chapters, the most of any National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) group. It is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.
History
Lenora Ashmore Blackiston, Mary Sommerville Sparks Hendrick, Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson, and Sara Turner White founded Kappa Delta on the beliefs of friendship, fellowship, and sisterly love. Kappa Delta was the only sorority to become a member of the National Panhellenic Conference immediately upon petition. Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson was the granddaughter of the former U.S. President John Tyler and was named after her grandmother, First Lady Julia Gardiner Tyler.

Symbols
The official symbols and mascots are the nautilus shell, the dagger, the teddy bear and the katydid.[1] The official colors are olive green and pearl white.[1] The official flower is the white rose.[1] KD has 3 official jewels, the diamond, the emerald, and the pearl.[1]
Famous firsts
Kappa Delta was the first sorority that was accepted into the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) as soon as they petitioned to join. Kappa Delta then became the first NPC group to form partnerships with various women's organizations, such as the Association of Junior Leagues International, which has an impact on women's community leadership, the Girl Scouts of the USA, and the Women's Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee.

Social Initiatives
Kappa Delta organized the Confidence Coalition in the Spring of 2009. The movement brings together all individuals, organizations and companies committed to promoting confidence among women and girls. By banding together, the movement aims to empower women and girls to stand up against issues that impact their self-esteem (i.e. media stereotypes, spousal and dating abuse, bullying, hazing, gossiping).[3]
Some national campaigns include the "Go Confidently″ campaign, which is meant to raises awareness, and the ″You Make Me Smile″ campaign, which is meant to boost confidence. In 2010, Kappa Delta created International Girls Day on behalf of the Confidence Coalition. With the message ″She Can Do Anything!″, the celebration acknowledges the spirit of girls and encourages girls to make their dreams a reality.[3]
