History
SR 13 used to extend into downtown Indianapolis until the 1940s. State Road 13 originated with an old Indian trail. This was part of the route that Eastern settlers, having crossed the lakes to Detroit, used after they disembarked to travel south into Indiana. In the early days, SR 13 was called the "Logansport–White Pigeon Road." [2]

Special routes
There have been two different special routes of SR 13. Business SR 13 (BUS SR 13) in North Manchester and Alternate SR 13 (ALT SR 13) near Lake Wawasee both have been decommissioned.
BUS SR 13
Location | North Manchester |
---|
Business SR 13 (BUS SR 13) was a business spur running through the city of North Manchester. The route started at Main Street (SR 114) and headed north towards SR 13. The road is now Wayne Street and it followed the original route of SR 13 through town.
ALT SR 13
Location | Lake Wawasee |
---|
ALT SR 13 was an alternate loop route running east of Syracuse, near Lake Wawasee. ALT SR 13 has been decommissioned, the route is now county roads. ALT SR 13 headed east from SR 13 south of Syracuse, then turning north on the eastside of Lake Wawasee. ALT SR 13 had an intersection at SR 8, now ending in Albion. ATL SR 13 headed towards US 6/US 33, ALT SR 13 crossed US 6. ALT SR 13 headed north towards Old US 33 (Lincoln Highway), then turning west on Old US 33 heading toward SR 13.
