Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    Translators

    Hello, Wikipedia Help desk!

I've searched around and I'm still not sure this is the correct place to pose this question/request: if it is, that's great. If not, and if there IS somewhere to point me in WP -- point away! Thanks.

Simple request: I've published an article in English. (My first.) I've now been asked whether it's possible to translate it onto Hebrew and have it published on he.wikipedia.org . I know the simple answer is "yes," but also that it's not that simple. I neither read nor write Hebrew, and even if I could get a good translation of the article, I realize we'd still need someone fluent in both Hebrew AND in editing in Wikipedia in Hebrew (and with the proper keyboard, etc.), since I've learned that just getting the article posted initially doesn't end things -- there will probably be unanticipated formatting issues as well as post-publishing comments that have to be addressed and so on.

The question: is there a "marketplace" somewhere in Wikipedia where I can post a request for someone capable of handling the translation, placement and up-front editing of the piece, where people offer themselves up for tasks like this (ideally voluntarily)? I've been unable to locate one so far.

    Thanks!

I assume that the person(s) asking for it to be translated into Hebrew can read/write Hebrew? You should refer them to he:ויקיפדיה:תרגום (the hewiki version of Wikipedia:Translate) or to Wikipedia:Translate us PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 02:45, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Heading text

    Removing "needs cleanup"

After I have cleaned up an article, how do I remove the banner at the top that says "this article needs cleanup".

Also, how do i get someone else to review the article i cleaned up.

    rich (talk) 00:45, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you believe that you have adequately addressed the concerns, you can remove it yourself. Look fo either the "{{Multiple issues|....}}" tag or the "{{cleanup|...}}" and either remove it completely, or amend it as required. As for it being reviewed, sooner or later someone will look at it and "review" it PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 02:40, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you're referring to your edits to the Arizona Stadium article (it helps if you tell us what article you're referring to in case of any special circumstances or clarification), then you would edit the article and find at the top where it says {{Multiple issues|update=April 2012|cleanup=April 2012|expert=College Football|date=April 2012}}. Take out the |cleanup=April 2012 bit. And then save. Dismas|(talk) 02:42, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Both of these articles are locked, but new information has come up that should be added:

In an August 12, 2012 interview with the Deccan Herald, Asko Parpola clarified his position on Indus script by admitting that Sanskrit-speakers had contributed to the Indus Valley Civilization[1]

I'm not sure I should be the one to do the edits, since I published a book on this topic and may have a conflict of interest.S. M. Sullivan (talk) 01:56, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My advice would be to discuss this on the articles' talk pages. If you receive no response in (say) a week, be bold and make the changes! PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 02:37, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The above is good advice. You'll need to be autoconfirmed to edit the semi-protected pages, which happens after your account is at more than 4 days old with at least 10 edits. RudolfRed (talk) 03:26, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A bit late in the day as the 'addmitting' wording has been added to articles, but it's clearly a pov way to phrase it. Dougweller (talk) 05:25, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Fair use for statues?

Recently, it appears there is a group of Wikipedians who have DEDICATED THEIR LIVES to deleting pictures of statues because of a lack of "Freedom of Panorama." Is there ANY WAY images of copyrighted statues could be used under fair use? Or are we just doomed to a modern sculpture-less Wikipedia? If so, I'll start nominating all of the pictures on Christ the Redeemer (statue) for deletion as well. Sound unreasonable to anyone else? DavidSSabb (talk) 02:50, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell all of the photos on the Christ the Redeemer (statue) page are licenced and not used under Fair Use rationale. Did you mean to link to a different page? If you have issues with the WP:FAIRUSE policy, then bring it up at the talk page there. RudolfRed (talk) 04:56, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I meant to link to that page. That page isn't really the point. But using the same criteria under which Commons:File:DanBooneASU.jpg was recently deleted under, and the criteria that every single image of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is nominated for deletion under, pictures of statues where the artist died less than 90 years ago (in the US, 70 in Brazil) should be deleted. My question was, is that actually what is supposed to be happening, or is there a fair use rationale that would allow pictures of copyrighted statues to remain. DavidSSabb (talk) 05:25, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You would only need to delete the photos if they were not licenced, and all the photos in the Christ the Redeemer page are licensed, so it doesn't matter that they are not eligible for fair use or public domain status. As far as I know, Commons never hosts non-free content, so fair use won't save those photos anyway. RudolfRed (talk) 05:56, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On the topic of the Martin Luther King, Jr. a picture could be uploaded locally under fair use. Ryan Vesey 06:05, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair use exists for all statues so at least one image should be used. On another note, Brazil allows freedom of panorama so any images of Brazilian statues can be freely licensed. You can view specific freedom of panorama requirements at Commons:Commons:FOP. I'm certainly not a fan of Freedom of Panorama laws. You can't even upload a picture of a building from Laos due to their highly restrictive licenses. Ryan Vesey 06:02, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    frozen iris

If an iris is frozen one winter however the plants didn't appear to be harmed except no buds & no blooms. Will it bloom the next growing season?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.162.46.110 (talk) 02:59, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. why kashmir is showed as territory claimed by india on wiki?

    Hello Team,

This is surprise to see that most of the part of the kashmir is shown as a territory of china or pakistan on wiki.

Please revised the information correctly as it is hurting all indians who are visiting wiki.

If these territor's are the part of pakistan and china then there will be no issues to claim whole china and pakistan as a part of india.

please check and then post the figures correctly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.131.85.207 (talk) 06:32, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you have concerns about the Kashmir article, you should post a note on that article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 06:40, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This question has been discussed many times - see the archives of Talk:Kashmir conflict. Wikikpedia attempts to be neutral, and, with respect, your view of matters is one of several conflicting views: Wikipedia should be reporting all the views without privileging any of them. --ColinFine (talk) 09:43, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You don't refer to a specific page or map but I guess you saw a map which shows who is currently controlling the territory. The map may have dotted lines to signal a territory claimed by another country. This goes both ways. The unidentified map probably also has a part which is shown as controlled by India but claimed by Pakistan. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:23, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Translators (ATTN: PHANTOM STEVE)

(Sorry that this is a new section -- I couldn't figure out how to place my response on this Help desk page immediately under your answer to my question.)

Thanks for your helpful reply, but the person who asked -- and who HAS offered to do a basic translation -- is, and will remain, clueless as to how to work with Wikipedia -- that's why I'm looking for someone who can both handle the translation (or the "requestor's" initial translation) AND then process it into a Wiki article. Someone facile in Hebrew and working with Wikipedia. (And, of course, he/she would be directed to or know of those pages you cited.) So -- is there a resource on this site to find someone like that? Thanks. (And if you can, please tell me how to format my replies to replies so they end up in the right place, rather than creating a new section each time!) EdEbdavids (talk) 06:37, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I really think he:ויקיפדיה:תרגום (as linked by Steve) is the best place to ask. As for adding to an existing discussion, you edit that discussion (by picking the 'Edit' beside its title), and then add further text. You can indent it by starting the paragraph with a colon (':'): the more colons, the deeper the indent. --ColinFine (talk) 09:48, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, ColinFine (and Steve). Appreciate the advice -- but it looks like, at least to start the process, I'll have to find some level of a combo Hebrew (and possibly)

Wiki expert to place/read the response! Off we go. Ebdavids (talk) 20:10, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    The Prospect Before Us

Article "The Prospect Before Us" refers only to a folk album. Its talk page is inaccessible, and the fact that the title also applies to a Sadler's Wells ballet of the 1940s cannot be raised there in your byzantine, arbitrary, and blinkered editorial process, with which I am personally completely fed up. While the ballet isn't revived these days, its score, which Lambert, who was a brilliant conductor, recorded, is of interest. It was arranged by Constant Lambert from music by Boyce, and was, since Lambert also edited the music he had drawn it from, the set of Symphonies Boyce published under that title (really what we would now call overtures) in the 1760s, indirectly the means by which this music, in its original scoring, which Lambert had "improved", was restored to the current baroque repertory. A short article might not be out of place, but even if the ballet were referred to in your Constant Lambert article (which ignores this important side of his activity), disambiguation might not be out of order.Delahays (talk) 08:30, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Prospect Before Us (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
If you'd like to write an article about the ballet, since you seem to know something about it, you can put it at The Prospect Before Us (ballet). When you've done that, you can add a link to the article about the ballet to the top of the existing article about the folk album by using the {{for}} template. This is how things are normally done when there are two articles about things for which the names are the same. You could additionally add links to the ballet in the appropriate articles for the composers and such. Additionally, the talk page for the folk album is accessible at Talk:The Prospect Before Us. But if you're going to be writing an article about the ballet, I don't see why you'd need to edit the talk page of the article about the album. Dismas|(talk) 09:13, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally - that talk page is not inaccessible, it just has no talk on it yet. To talk there, you could click on its "New section" tab. But I agree with Dismas, it would be better just to create an article about the ballet, as he says. Maproom (talk) 09:28, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Exporting templates to a private wiki

My employer has started a wiki. I would like to export a few templates (not all) from Wikipedia. What is the easiest way to do so for a newbie? --123.236.177.234 (talk) 08:36, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Depending on the number of templates, I would say copy/paste would be the easiest for just a few templates. A template is nothing more than a specialized article. There may be a way to get them out of a download of the database as well though never having downloaded the whole of Wikipedia, I'm not sure on that one. See WP:DOWNLOAD for info on that. Dismas|(talk) 09:06, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But beware: many of the most-used templates in Wikipedia are complicated beasts that use numerous other templates, so it may be difficult to get them working in another Wiki. --ColinFine (talk) 09:51, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to use Infoboxes. It doesn't seem like copy-pasting that will work? --123.236.177.234 (talk) 11:19, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Unless the infobox has another template imbedded in it, I don't know why it wouldn't work. If it did, you'd have to copy that template as well of course. Dismas|(talk) 19:32, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reusing Wikipedia article content in a private wiki

I'm busy setting up a wiki for a disability support organisation. The members have a need to create information and guidance articles for people who are new to living with the particular condition. I would like to "seed" some of those articles with excerpts, or in some cases even entire articles, from Wikipedia. The members will then modify and adapt the content to suit their specific needs. Because these articles would most likely still contain passages from Wikipedia we have some doubts about the copyright status of the artices. Please advise. Roger (talk) 09:47, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In general you can freely do so, as long as the source is acknowledged. See WP:Reusing Wikipedia content for more information. --ColinFine (talk) 09:52, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That policy page isn't really clear about the copyright status of documents that use passages from Wikipedia, as distinct from republishing entire wikipedia articles. Can we claim full copyright or are we forced to use CC by SA for our entire work just because it contains some material from WP? If we can't fully copyright our articles then we'd rather use WP as a source the same way sources are used here by paraphrasing rather than copying - it just means a lot more work and time... Roger (talk) 10:33, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Anybody? Please, I really need to resolve this. Roger (talk) 16:35, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You could always seek advice from Moonriddengirl (talk · contribs) she is quite good on this area of things. Wesley Mouse 16:41, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We cannot give legal advice. If you are concerned about reusing the content, you should ask your lawyer to review the licence. RudolfRed (talk) 21:04, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not looking for legal advice - I just need clarification of Wikipedia's own rules. Roger (talk) 21:11, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you're using Wikipedia as the source, even if you then change it, then you need to follow our rules about credit and derivative works, and can't claim copyright; that's pretty much axiomatic. Anything more complex than that does require a lawyer's advice. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:00, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Missing reference in Chinese Wikipedia 'Hong Kong Tramways'article

A few days ago there was a visible reference to a book called 'Amazing Ding Ding' in this page, but it has now gone. This book was only published in June of this year and I notice that The Centenary Date with Hong Kong Tramways, which was published in July is still there.

Can someone explain why this is, it is my belief that some sort of underhand practice has taken place here to deliberately remove the earlier book and if this is the case it renders Wikipedia useless in a free information world!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lurdenlaw (talkcontribs) 11:25, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This help desk is for the English Wikipedia and I don't know Chinese. It was removed in this edit. You will have to discuss it at the Chinese Wikipedia. If you make absurd claims like the sixth most visited website in the World being useless because a link is removed from one of millions of pages then they may not take you seriously. Wikipedia is a wiki and things are changed or removed all the time for various reasons. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:45, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

With respect this is NOT a claim let alone an absurd one, for your information I was on the Chinese site and was linked back to here, hence my question. I appreciate that one of the main strengths of wikipedia is its ability to be edited by users, but if people start to edit it purely for their own (commercial) gain then that will render the article and by definition wikipedia useless over the long term. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lurdenlaw (talkcontribs) 11:50, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your only interest in Wikipedia is adding this book to both the English and Chinese Wikipedia. It looks to me like the one with a personal interest is you. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:00, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever you are you certainly appear to be rather sad and somewhat pathetic person. If you look at the details of the books before you make wild accustaions you will see that I have NO vested interest in either book other than being a buyer of them and interested in fair play to both authors and if, as you claim, this site is only for the English Wikipedia and I can't edit the Chinese one then what's your problem? Subject CLOSED! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lurdenlaw (talkcontribs) 13:15, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can edit the Chinese Wikipedia like everybody else. You apparently want the subject closed so I'm not asking what makes you think otherwise. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:05, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This thread does contains "wild accustaions", but they were not made by PrimeHunter. Maproom (talk) 15:38, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed few days ago that the link function in editing give always a positive response, even for not existent articles. Now I wanted to change the colour of this template Template:Timeline Classical Composers Baroque from the painful to the eyes bright green that I see to something easier to read but, clicking on edit it, I discovered that the colours used are: offWhite, paleGray, darkGray, baroqueBlue. Now I wonder if Linux or FF (or my monitor for the last one) are the cause(s) of the issues. Any info on both issues would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Dia^ (talk) 11:41, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It defines its own rgb color with id:baroqueBlue value:rgb(0.6,1,0.5). I don't know what baroqueBlue is supposed to look like but 1 seems like a lot of green for something called blue. It's also bright green to me. You can change the rgb definition. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:51, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Product is dead, but no official word so nothing to document?

This has been bugging me for some time now but I don't really know what to do about it. Jumpgate is a game I used to play for a while. I came back to it and found it utterly dead. There has been absolutely no official word about it dying (all released employees mention strict NDAs) and the only place information is coming through is through third-person leaks posted semi-anonymously in forums. The main website is still up but all links are dead, officially due to a temporary server outage sometime last year. With this kind of situation, will the Wikipedia page always show it as currently active, as there are no citations to link to otherwise? As a side note, the article for its sequel is flagged as likely-dead. Odysseus (talk) 16:33, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The second paragraph says "The remaining server was shut down on April 30, 2012". I have replaced "is" by "was" in the first sentence of the article. Maproom (talk) 18:30, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Bah, I should have checked my sources again anyhow within the last couple months. Looks like they finally put up a proper message on their main website rather than the dying thing they had there before. I also need to at least read the article history more closely rather than just saying "nothing has changed". Thank you for your time on this Odysseus (talk) 23:16, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    User:Michelle19660620/Jan Hofmeyer Community Services

Hi there, I published an article for the 1st time last night. This is for my MBA project, but the article lasted about 5 minutes before it was deleted off the system again. I managed to publish a much shorter version and it seemed to have made it through the day. Q1: Is there anyone out there that can tell me if the shorter version is violating any Wikipedia rules? The new article is called Jan Hofmeyer Community Services and the older deleted version is currently in User:Michelle19660620/Jan Hofmeyer Community Services.

As I am unfamiliar with the site, I don't know if you are able to access the older document.

Q2: Are detail like the below allowed for the article on Wikipedia? Jan Hofmeyer Community Services (JHCS) is a non-racial charity organisation registered with the Department of Social Development as an independent non-profit organization on the 1 August 2000 [009/757/NPO], to uplift the marginalized communities of Jan Hofmeyer, Vredepark and Vrededorp. Since 20 June 2008 JHCS is also registered as a section 21 Company. The organisation is registered with SARS in terms of section 18a of the income tax act.

Help will be much appreciated. Michelle

My guess is that the article was deleted because it did not demonstrate that its subject was notable, and that the current version Jan Hofmeyer Community Services will soon be deleted for the same reason. (Ordinary editors, like me, do not have access to deleted articles.) Maproom (talk) 18:41, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Brown University people entry literature

Problem: some named MikeWazowski (is that the Wiki computer?) keeps deleting me, saying there is no verification? to my entry Dear Madame or Sirs: I attempted to place the date of graduation and the degree from Brown University and then followed it with a list of my internationally published novels (and they were highly critically acclaimed in newspapers in the U.S. and Europe)on the Brown U. people/literature site. It is important. My entry was removed (due to placing it myself? or due to the fact that Shangri-la was cited as the official sequel to LOST HORIZON--there is only one book possible for that title, this book, due to the fact that it was published by William Morrow NY, the publishers of James Hilton's original and they were the only folks along with the estate of JHilton who could approve it), therefore, however, all my information is correct and my name should be entered in that site along with my literary (major publishings available on Amazon for credence) accomplishments. Please help me to get on the site or provide someone (other than myself) that might be able to write and submit this piece. Many friends and fans of the books have asked why my name does not appear on the Brown University people list/literature. The article in question is List of Brown University people, and I assume you are Daniel Altieri. There is no Wikipedia article about you, as there is about almost all the others listed in the article – this explains why your name does not appear on the list. Maproom (talk) 19:50, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou Maproom: it is true. There are no books about me. However, my name lined with Brown and graduation can be sited in several places including Dan Altieri 1971 John Hay Library archives for a published thesis. The books and at least several of their foreign titles with my authorship are available throughout the web: i.e: Dan Altieri COURT OF THE LION (by the way named to best historical fiction lists); also Dan Altieri DECEPTION: A novel of murder and madness in T'ang China or DIE EISERNE KAISERIN (a huge success), or Dan Altieri L'EMPERATRICE DES MENSONGES, OR Dan Altieri SHANGRI-LA" the return to the world of LOST HORIZON--etc..I do not know how else to provide proof or verification--as a scholar and writer, one of the things we love about Wikipedia is its constant work to retain honesty and authenticity, but how might Daniel P. Altieri (A.M. 1971) be put into its proper place without the unneutrality of nepotism--all this information is easily verifiable. The publishers used to put out write ups all around the world but I would jnhot know how to collect them all--There was William Morrow in NY 1988, 1991, 1994, along with Michael Joseph Viking Penguin, UK 1989, as well as Bertelsmann (Europe--parent countryof Random House and owner of our major imprints in Europe (well, many of them). My name is everywhere. Please help me--this Brown network is most important and my place on it most most deserved--and this is one case where I must self-promote. Years ago our dear friend's father wrote the screenplay for Lawrence of Arabia--due to the blacklist his name was excised, I am not saying that this is happening now, only an honest search for truth in information. But this is the truth and it is sad to be constantly deleted--I was careful to avoid any statements that were not readily available. \By the way the eNY Times Notable book for Shangri-La: read--"...beautiful and subtle." I just would most love your help to finally get up on that much deserved list. Thankyou, Wikipedia rocks and you folks too Dan Dear Maproom_I did remember something, Dan, here again: there are several mentions of Daniel Altieri author in Wikipedia: One referring to the Precious Consort (the real one in China long ago), does mention THE COURT OF HE LION and another a very brief one mentions SHANGR-LA in the sequels part of the James Hilton article when it says there are only two sequels to LOST HORIZON--my name appears there as well with Eleanor Cooney--however, in truth, there is really only one sequel that was authorized by HIlton family and publisher and that is Shangri-La, the other "Messenger" was not officially approved-so perhaps that article mention needs emmendment. Thanks again Dan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Preciousconsort (talkcontribs) 21:26, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any doubt that you wrote those books, and that you graduated from Brown when you say you did. But a mention in the List of Brown University people article will (in my opinion) require an article about you; I assume that the lack of such an article is why MikeWazowski (who I believe is an ordinary human Wikipedia editor) keeps deleting your name from the list. An article about you will require evidence of your "notability". This must involve third-party citations. And "third-party" excludes Amazon, which sells your books; and your publishers; and even Wikipedia itself. A review of one of your books, particularly in a respected publication like the NYRB, would count.
I can't create an article about you myself, as I know nothing about you and have never read any of your books. But I can warn you of the obstacles in creating an article. If you read the whole of this help page, you will see several complaints from new editors who have created an article, failed to demonstrate notability, and found it has been deleted. Thankyou Maproom: and editor MikeWazowski: I appreciate your task and understand the way this must proceed & I appreciate that you have stayed with me on this most important quest and do need toresolve it . Therefore, for a start, I am going to dig up (although many in storage), after so many years, a few of the reviews of notability from U.S. newspaper publications and Foreign ones may still be immediately available--thankyou and please stay with me as I shall attempt to properly resolve this174.62.64.19 (talk) 18:06, 13 August 2012 (UTC)presciousconsort Dan[reply]

Dear OrangeMike:and Maproom: I enjoyed reading the little blog.about Orange mike And to everyone helping me here--Maproom and MikeWazowski et.al.it is great to see the human side, right behind this immense human/computer accomplishment of Wikipedia. Briefly, I was not writing very much about myself, but by simply putting the book titles and my date at Brown etc. and knowing it was in red color, I hoped that "Someone might pick up the ball and edit a legitimate piece". I was happy for the red color--please someone out there, you know me--edit this article make it "blue". Left alone, I feel that I might be forgotten. Did I mention that both COURT OF THE LION and DECEPTION/IRON EMPRESS and many titles in Europe achieved the distinction of garnering the best consistent reviews around the world for the publishing house back then. And that these first two works were highly acclaimed critically around the world. In fact Deception, titled Eiserne Kaiserin was touted on the same page in Die Spiegel in Germany as Schindler's List. But I felt that if I did not pull it together to make a bit of controversy, there would be no one out there who would remember me for the list.In England, when the British version of COURT OF THE LION came out, the entire staff of Michael Joseph, Viking Penguin stood up and applauded as we literary novices entered the room and the Publisher rode down in the elevator to offer a bottle of wine--these moments are lost, but at least to be on the notable list of Brown Students would be some remembrance, some honest worthy compensation. But how to remind people? I am not cool or hip, -- but seems the books were, very evidentally. But now, but for A few people each week visiting the Kindle ebook sites where many of the international reviews were gathered, that is all. I needed to start something--and being not computer savvy--but knowing everything I would say to be the truth as my temporary Brown People Entry list only mentions the nameof the books, there was little room for self-promotion. Hey, remember me, dear Brown, we sold several (low) million copies and the San Jose Mercury News on a sunday said..." the best book of...and Le Figaro in Paris...wow! Best historical books lists, Alas...But who would remember if not for that rewarding little line in Brown notables, so I dove in, broke the rule but knew that I was down in the color red and as yet unconfirmed, and unauthenticated, and hoped it was a "red flag" so that someone would go, oh yeah, let me confirm this stuff about this guy? Those were great books. We were even put on the short list for the BOOKER PRIZE (but no one would know as it was an error of nationality, obvious ly long ago in 1989-90some over-eager but well-meaning British judges jumped the gun without seeing that the coauthors were American. But simply because they enjoyed the reads... nice feeling for the moment, but well, it too, was never recorded. Someone, out there, from U.S. France, England Germany where ever you might be, maybe some way we will make the list? I have enjoyed this time with all of you, and look forward to continuing to hear from you a I solve the list citation problem. You are doing great work--no kidding here. Dear Maproom: Thankyou for your response regards a review of quality for my verification. I have many such prestigious reviews on the lines of NYRB from around the world, how and where would I cite them?Where would I put them? I have the general year placed journal or major paper that the reviews appear, the authors etc. Inorder for my Brown people list entry to be returned, should I replace my name on list? (that sounds wrong) and then add these great review cites so that an editor can check them and decide against further deletion? How? Where?174.62.64.19 (talk) 19:01, 14 August 2012 (UTC) Dan[reply]

You begin by requesting the creation of an article about you at Wikipedia:Requested articles (obviously, disclosing fully your own conflict of interest). At that point, offer as much specific information useful in the creation of an article as possible. Thus: don't say, New York Review of Gallimaufry reviewed This Book of Mine sometime in the 1980s; because that doesn't help. Instead, we need to know the usual reference information, i.e.:
Fonebone, Cunigonde. "This Book of Mine Cures Warts in Toads, May Inspire Global Reunification" New York Review of Gallimaufry March 17, 1987 (Vol. 139, No. 17); p. 43, col. 4.
Once there is an article about you here, then it would be appropriate for somebody (preferably somebody other than yourself) to add your name to the long illustrious list of Brown alumns. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:50, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou OrangeMike (by theway, much enjoyed the very hip picture of you). The odd thing is that I am not so much requesting a full article about me,(I understand tahtisthe process) and there already articles about the Books COURT OF THE LION and DECEPTION etc. galore. There are even mentions of the books in other Wikpedia articles: Court of the Lion is mentioned in Wikipedia article of Yang Guifei; Deception of L'Imperatrice des mensonges (French bestselling title of same) is mentioned in Wikipedia article of Juge Ti (Judge Dee); Shangri-la is mentioned (erroneously, this article needs a major correction and apology to us --the authors) Wikipedia in James Hilton sequels article. Yes, I would appreciate it if someone would [please reverse the deletion from the Brown U. List, that is sufficient mention for me for now--unless someone wants to write yet another story about TheCOURT OF THE LION, or DECEPTION /Eiserne Kaiserin novels etc.(my/our critically acclaimed novels of China.) However, as I can cite (many more than I can list from all over the world, references to the notable level of critical achievement for the first three books mentioned in my (alas, deleted Brown LIst): OK for Shangri-la Kirkus Reviews, "Shangri-la: the return tothe world of Lost Horizon," Kirkus Reviews Review post Kirkus Reviews Issue Feb. 15th 1996; for The COURT OF THE LION: Publishers Weekly Issue Jan. ?1988 (spectacular praise, for DECEPTION: a novelof murder and madness in T'ang China in Kirkus Reviews, review posts, Kirkus Review Issue March 1, 1993. I don't care about an article about myself but anyone who is familiar can write about these highly reviewed books. I had to get file folders for the sheer amount of review material worldwide from press and newspaper coverage. pleaes continue until Iam back up on the list. Dear SarahStierch: Thankyou for your response. I have appreciated the well-meaning and helpful advice from the editorial staff. I was hoping that the sheer amount of notoriety received in literary critics review material much of it posted on the web from Parisian papers Le Figaro, German Die Spiegel, To London Times, Publisher's weekly, Kirkus reviews and many many newspapers, and the remarks and reviews keep coming long after these bookswere published--nevertheless,I was hoping that the notoriety of the books themselves would have provided already ascertainlable proof of my legitimacy and "notability", without an article asn such--MAPROOM said if I could come upwith one gret prestigious review cited, that would be proof enough, I got a hundred of them--how to proceed and get back on the list--through out the late 80's and through the 90's the books were praised,staggeringly--comparedtoNameof the Rose, Better tha Shogun etc etc. etc. the reviews iwere ncredible, awesome (if you will excuse) even from the perspectives of the most hardened of lit agents and editors inNY back then.

But about me, what would there be to say. I wrote them and coauthored them and am writing new works and painted large Chinese brush landscapes and visited China and translated Chinese and Japanese that appears inthe novels, my very self. Rode some fine horses, danced ballet (really), and, much earlier on attended Brown (with degrees), University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University's daunting Asian studies department and others in other fields, etc etc. and went on to lecture a bit and then simply lay low and created and wrote... so who cares about me, it is the books that have achieved the notableness--but that should carry me onto the list? Shouldn't it...Heavens, I didn't found a city, or start a great institution (had lots of fans, can't speak for them) or anything...so where to go from here to get on my rightful place in the list? Where can I gather and post some of the most easily accessible of my prestigious reviews..,?Or why doesn't anyone just click on Daniel Altieri author. They'll keep coming--match them with COURT OF THE LION or DIE EISERNE KAISERIN or L'IMPERATRICE des MENSONGES or SHANGRI_LA or HELP!!! Onward and hopefully upward. What's a fellow gotta do?--Did i mention Best histortical ficition lists (several)...and 174.62.64.19 (talk) 23:54, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    How access "deleted" pages?

A year or so ago, I was asked by a nonprofit club I volunteered at to add a page to their website, and we promptly found that we had lost control of the site. No big deal, I'll put your info up on Wikipedia for now. It's blatant advertising so it won't _stay_ there long, but you can see it while it lasts. Actually, the page lasted longer than I had expected, but it did eventually get taken down. We now have control of our website again, but I cannot find my source text. And, I cannot even get to the deleted page thru my "contributions" link. How does one access a "deleted" page? It should still be in the records somewhere, just marked "don't show this". — Preceding unsigned comment added by SandyJax (talkcontribs) 00:01, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rename of "The Qube" back to "Chase Tower"

In reference to the following page: The Qube (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Problem: The title of this article and all references to the building's name should be changed back to "Chase Tower" from "The Qube". It appears that a Wikipedia contributor has changed this information on or around May 1, 2012.

Reason: It is true that the name "The Qube" is used to reference the building, however it's official name is "Chase Tower" and will remain so for the time being. "The Qube" is an internal branding name that is used by the employees of Quicken Loans, one of the "Chase Tower" tenants, to describe the building. The term comes from the shape of the building being similar to that of a Cube, combined with the propensity for Quicken Loans to use a Q whenever possible.69.14.61.121 (talk) 00:53, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I received a reply from a Vchimpanzee which didn't address the issue at hand, at all and here is my reply to Vchimpanzee which has yet to be answered: Dear Vchimpanzee -- I realize that allure is not the goal of Wikipedia, It was a compliment extended to an organization of growing prestige. The point of my earlier writing is the non-response from Excirial about the last revision of Mr. Morehouse's biographical article. It was revised after reliable sources were implemented based upon the approving nod of the earlier editor, Matthewrbowker, once I asked if such a source method would be considered valid. I would simply like to know what is considered objectionable about this article now, so that it can be corrected in a timely fashion and (again) re-submitted. If Excirial is simply too busy, both within and without Wikipedia, it would be appreciated if someone else could assess the article and detail to me specifically what is wrong and how it can be corrected. I would apprecaite somone's assistance in doing whatever seems in need of correction so that the article can be posted Thank you so much Stivemeister (talk)Stivemeister

In its present state, the article has several problems.
    1. It has a syntax error, causing a conspicuous error message, and preventing the references from appearing.
    2. It does not establish that its subject is notable (maybe this will be resolved if the references can be made to appear)
    3. It was written by someone with the same name as its subject, and who therefore presumably has a conflict of interest. Maproom (talk) 14:40, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Archive usage when first citing source?

Let's say a reliable web source (only available online) dies, and I know that there is something I want to cite in it, but it hasn't yet been cited in the article I want to use it in. If there's an archive (say, on the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive) of the page, can I cite it (assuming a reliable live source cannot be found)?

For reference, here's my dilemma: at the article Dylan and Cole Sprouse, there is a hopelessly dead source (the source disallowed bots to archive it) that I want to replace. The information is fairly simple factual stuff (not any sort of thing that a POV could be applied to) that I know is on their official site. Their site has been unavailable for at least two weeks. I conducted a thorough search and could not find a live reliable source for the information cited. Is it okay to use the archived version of their site as a source? - Purplewowies (talk) 06:20, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Citing wayback is general the same as citing the website. I make no statement on whether the site was or was not a reliable source. RJFJR (talk) 18:20, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm reasonably sure it's reliable. I just wasn't sure it was okay to cite Wayback from the start. I've only ever used it to replace dead sources already in use. - Purplewowies (talk) 20:06, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Same person keeps posting libelous material on my site

I'm a writer. Not a famous one. I don't even care if I have a wiki page, but I do. The same person is constantly going onto my page and siting extremely negative and libelous (it is sourced, but from years ago and is also biased) and every single day I have to go and delete the information.

I know it's the same person because this person contacted me and told me he was going to do this. I really don't understand the rules of arbitration or know how to contact anyone about this matter. I have said many wonderful things in my life, and I have also said many stupid things. Neither of which should be celebrated! I am merely a writer among writers trying to make a living.

As the page stands right of this instant, it shows I wrote a book in 2007 and work on a TV show. Great, perfect, neutral. How can I keep my page just as that?

Please help me. I know this is run by everyone and there's no one owner or whatever, but I don't need to be punished any more than I already have. Is it possible for me to block a user from adding info to the page? Or at least block anyone at all, except an editor of Wikipedia?

I hope you will help me. Thank you.

I have looked at the article Lesley Arfin, and tidied it up a bit, including restoring your date and place of birth – that is material which does belong in an encyclopedia article. I have looked at the "extremely negative" material which someone has been adding, and I agree that it should have no place in the article – it is far too unimportant and insignificant. I have added the article to my "watchlist", and if they put it back, I will delete it again. Maproom (talk) 09:10, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have spotted edit warring going on in the article and asked everyone to calm down here, where the affected parties have agreed to drop it for the time being. If you are still concerned about the content on the page, have a read of Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Help. You can then contact the Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard and file a report. However, there is no guarantee that anything can be removed, although in this instance it looks like a case of undue weight being placed on a source that has been regarded as potentially unreliable. The important thing is to keep calm, remain civil, and ask politely. Hope that's of use. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:54, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

At the site of Tamar (2 Samuel) I noticed that there were a lot of bare links linking to an online bible. I've been looking in the help sections, cause I'm sure there is something about it somewhere but can't find it. My question: What is the correct way to mention the bible verse/book (I suppose without the link) and should there be a link to an online version of the bible somewhere in the article?--Dianafl (talk) 12:58, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    There doesn't appear to be an issue. Mdann52 (talk) 15:10, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Bare link" means the url is displayed to readers by only writing the unformatted url as in http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt08b13.htm#1. I suspect you have something else in mind. Is it about external links in the article text like 2 Samuel 13 made with {{bibleverse}}? PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes the bibleverse thing. I'm still learning, so I thought that a bare link a direct link in the text was. hello, I'm writing an entry about a poet, and I would like to add two external links I'm not sure about. One of them is a youtube video of her reading to an audience - how do I know that it is good in terms of license? The second one, is a link to a audio of the poet giving a reading of her poems. The audio goes up when I enter the site, without asking for specific media player. Can I use this link too? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Meitalklachuk (talkcontribs) 16:15, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You shouldn't link to it if the site is violating copyright, so the question becomes do you have reason to believe it is not a copyright violation. Do the sites make any claim that they are valid within copyright? RJFJR (talk) 18:25, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some youtube sites have an appropriate license, most do not. If you cannot tell, add the link here, and we will check for you.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:40, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure where or how to check if the sites are valid within copyright. May I add here the links to check it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Meitalklachuk (talkcontribs) 18:41, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean this link, the license is not compatible with Wikipedia. You might contact the creator and ask them to chnage the license. I cannot make the change because it is not my video, but on my videos, there is a link where is says "Standard YouTube License" and I can change it to "Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)".
Please feel free to add the other link(s), and I will check if I can.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:47, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, all three of those are not acceptable. The first has a specific copyright notice. I already commented on the second one, which has the standard Youtube license, which is not acceptable at Wikipedia (although that one is easily fixed by the owner, if they are willing). I don't see a copyright notice on the third, but if there is no copyright notice, the assumption is (with rare exceptions not applicable here) that it is subject to copyright, all rights reserved.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 19:47, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    USAF Pararescue Beret

I am trying to add a new photo to represent the USAF Pararescue caereer field, I am a member, I want to replace exsisting Photo of Pararescue beret with my photo, how can I do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pjrecon62 (talkcontribs) 17:05, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article has a number of images of individuals associated with the unit. It is possible another one may be warranted. It isn't clear to me why you would want to replace the image of the beret with an image of a person, they seem to satisfy different functions.
You can upload a picture of yourself at:
    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
See the upload link on the left.
Then you can propose the use of the photo on the article talk page, or propose replacement of an existing picture. I urge you not to replace an existing picture without making a case on the talk page, partly because it is, in general polite to check before removing someone else's image (although some feel differently) and second because you have a conflict of interest with respect to an image of yourself, so it is best if other editors agree. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:38, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Translating existing articles into English

I have worked as a translator for many years, but have no experience with creating Wikipedia articles. Since all I wish to do at the moment is take certain Italian articles and translate them as directly as possible into English (where none exists), can you tell me if there is a simple way to do this? I won't be wanting to change the format or content of the articles, which in this particular case all seem to be written by experts, but rather work directly on the existing Italian page, translate and save into the English website. Bethel University (tennessee) page

Hello, I would like to know how to keep wikipedians from simply going in and deleting work being done on a page. I am with the university's IT department and our Director is having us to update our page on wikipedia. I had done a lot of work and was currently working on trying to finish editing the sources and references on the page when one of your wikipedians deleted all of our work. It was not finished yet, none of us have worked with wikipedia before, and were working on editing paragraphs and things a small amount at a time. The wikipedian mentioned that our writing was too promotional in his comments-- but our university is a bit different from other Liberal Arts schools. The content was edited by our director as well as our development office. I am about to start to add the information again for it is the information we have approved and want on our site but I do not want to have a repeat of one of your wikipedians deleting our content. I will try to do a small paragraph at a time this time around and make sure all references and citations are included rather than pasting all the information in at once and then slowly editing and adding citations and references. The site that was edited and information was deleted from is the Bethel University (Tennessee) site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethel_University_(Tennessee)). The user that deleted our information is <LlamaDude78>. He does not have a page where I could email him to let him know to not delete our content. Thank you. --BIT2012 (talk) 18:45, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate that you want to improve the wikipedia page about the University that you work at, however please see WP:OWN. No ones owns a particular article, and as a Bethel University employee, you have an equal right to edit the pages on Bethel University and on Exxon Mobil. Similarly someone who works for Exxon Mobil (or elsewhere) has an equal right to edit both pages. Doing small edits is just fine, as is the idea of copying the article into your sandbox, making the changes there and then copying it back in. Also, please read the Wikipedia infomration on Conflict of Interest.Naraht (talk) 18:49, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Conflict of interest is very relevant here. It is likely (though not inevitable) that the community will not agree with you entirely about what is an improvement and what is not. It is much better for you to suggest your improvements on the article's talk page and let others make the edits. --ColinFine (talk) 20:34, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You lose a mark for giving a broken citation for the page you edited – it does not have an unpaired right parenthesis at the end. But your Director deserves a Fail, for encouraging students to edit Wikipedia, without first learning for him/herself how things work here. Maproom (talk) 21:46, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

editing my page to include updated source information

Hello. We received a notice that our page needs secondary sources. I assume that means that our references needed updating as it appeared that the link to the source was broken. I updated the info, but now it's listed twice and I cannot figure out how to delete the previous text. Please advise.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aetcnrc (talkcontribs) 19:02, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article has only three references, and two are broken. You attempted to fix them by typing the reference into the reference section, which seems logical, but that isn't how references are done. See Referencing for beginners for help, and ask again if that doesn't help enough.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 19:32, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else fixed your error, and I improved one of the refs--SPhilbrick(Talk) 19:40, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is no page in Wikipedia that is "your" page: please see WP:OWN. While you are about it, you should also read Wikipedia's policies on conflict of interest, and user names. --ColinFine (talk) 22:44, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This help desk is for using Wikipedia. You should go over to Reference desk/Computing and ask there. For future reference, it's best for you to download IE8 directly from Microsoft's website. - Purplewowies (talk) 22:50, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
IE8 is not available on XP so you either upgrade your Windows or switch to Google Chrome. ibicdlcod (talk) 12:42, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's IE9 that's not available on XP. Up until my XP partition killed itself, it was running the latest version of IE8 just fine. Also, personally, I really hate it when people suggest that I change to a different browser, especially when it's the one that I'm least likely to use (and on the OS, not everybody can upgrade, but I'm not so irked about that).
Asking my father, who works with computers for a living, he said this: you might have downloaded a virus. You should run a virus scan with an antivirus program and remove any viruses it finds. Then maybe you might be able to get a download of the IE8 installer from Microsoft's website (from another computer if you have no internet browser), save it to a removable drive (a USB flash drive or Jump drive or even a CD-R or floppy disk if you have to), then install it on your laptop. (The suggestions for what to do came from me, so they might be wrong. My dad only suggested what happened when presented with the information you gave.) - Purplewowies (talk) 22:09, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry if you've lost your system, but downloading software from an unsolicited advertisement which appears on your computer is liking inviting a random person who has come to your door to come in and take your valuables away. --ColinFine (talk) 22:47, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's possible it sounded like advertising in its tone, even if that wasn't your goal. Maybe you should try to submit it through WP:articles for creation or make it on a user subpage if you want to recreate it? - Purplewowies (talk) 04:54, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are we talking about Poets Corner Group? If so, then the subject may possibly be notable but the article itself has multiple serious problems. It is indeed written in advertising language, not the neutral, factual language required for an encyclopaedia article (for example, the first line is "Poets Corner is not only an idea, but a dream" and continues in a similar style). It contains the line "Our motto remains: 'With a will, to conquer by the quill'", which makes it abundantly clear that the person writing the article is a part of the organization so there may be questions of neutrality and conflict of interest. It contains a list of the organisation's non-notable staff (unnecessary) but no clear, factual description of what the organisation is and what it actually does (necessary). And of the five references you gave to support the article - none of them inline, just bare URLs - one is a sales listing, one is a blog, one is the organisation's own website and one doesn't work, leaving only the article in The Hindu as a single genuine independent source to show the organisation's notability, and one such source is not enough. The criticisms of the article as it stands are perfectly justified and it needs a lot of work to avoid deletion. Karenjc 08:49, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Need help to removed red-links.

I have a specific question regarding an article that I'm translated in my userspace: User:Mentoz86/List of Norway international footballers (1 – 24 caps). As this is copy pasted from no:wiki, the entire "national team career"-row have red-links that is not used on en:wiki, and I want to get rid of them without removing the text. Anyone got any tips or tricks on how to do this, without doing it manually? Mentoz86 (talk) 12:39, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copy into a text editor and replace [[ with and empty string and the same for ]] and then copy and paste it back into your draft. RJFJR (talk) 13:21, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Redlinks are useful things - they cause people to write articles. The best way to get rid of them is to turn them blue by writing articles about them. To start just a few lines briefly detailing who the person is/was and what they are notable for is sufficient. Roger (talk) 13:25, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll keep the redlinks on the footballers, but I'm not going to write articles like these:Category:England national football team results about the Norwegian team, so I want to get rid of those links. Will try RJFJR's suggestion later, but I don't think it'll work because the red-links have piped text, and it's only the pipe-text that I want to keep, not the name of the articles in Norwegian. :S Mentoz86 (talk) 13:57, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I use a text editor designed for programmers that has a macro function that might be able to handle that but it would be tricky and need to be watched. Doing it manually may not be as bad as it sounds once you get into the flow of making the repeated changes. (Sorry, I didn't realize they were piped.) RJFJR (talk) 14:07, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've now done it manually by replacing with a space, for the 20 different article names, and replaced 1 with 1 for all digits. Could be done easier, and now the problem is that there are too many spaces in between. But thanks for the help. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:49, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    File deletion

    Hello,

The article was marked for speedy deletion, and I am now revoking any Creative Commons licensing. I would like to know how to delete the file, or would like to have it deleted. If this is not possible, I will claim copyright violation and begin legal procedings to have the image removed. The file in question is located here: File:Malfunction films.png

    Sincerely yours,

David A. Barak— Preceding unsigned comment added by Creativehumanoid (talkcontribs) 14:54, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You do not need to begin legal proceedings to have an image deleted. Since you have requested it, I've added {{db-author}} to the image description page. Are you and User:Dbarak the same person? He (his account) is the one who uploaded the image, not you. - Purplewowies (talk) 15:15, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We will almost certainly be accommodating, but you are going about this the wrong way. For example, licensing as Creative Commons is irrevocable, so you shouldn't be stating that you are revoking the license, you have no standing to revoke the license. You should be politely asking if an exception can be made, in light of the fact that the intended purpose of the image is no longer in existence. I think that is a reasonable request, and support the deletion of the image. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:25, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Article edit count?

    Hello Wikipedia Community:

This summer I'm doing a bit of research on Wikipedia entries in the field of Science and Technology Studies. A central question I'm asking is the extent to which this field, as it is now on Wikipedia, includes, features, and references the contributions made by women, feminist theorists, and feminist theory. To answer this, I'm gathering data on existing pages using mixed methods. One piece of information I'm interested in finding out is how many times a given article has been edited, by whom, and what types of edits have been made over time. I've found the "history" tool useful, but not all that easy to use for my purposes. For instance, while it is common to have a list of how many edits any given *editor* has made, I find it is not easy to see how many times an *article* has been edited. I've been downloading the edit history and manually calculating this, but I thought it would be worth asking around to see there might be an easier way to collect this data, and any related data regarding type and kinds of edits.

Thanks in advance for any insight on this.

    Best regards, "Shameran81" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shameran81 (talkcontribs) 21:04, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If your field of study includes computer science you might be interested in the downloads of our database. The reason I say might is because the dumps are very big and you would need to figure out how to process the data extract useful information. RJFJR (talk) 01:21, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Naraht Thank you. That is a nice tool to have at hand. The information is very much summarized, however. RE: RJFJR Thank you. I can probably sort out how to process/extract data. I imagine the dumps are big. Are downloads of a particular article available or does the whole database dump have to be downloaded? Shameran81 (talk) 20:08, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Gregovic

I have a problem with the above referenced page. Ms. Angela Gregovic has listed on her page that Vera Gregovic is her grandmother. This is not true. Vera Gregovic had only one child, Floria Gregovic, on Decemeber 12, 1948. Floria had three children: Vera (1977), Romulus (1979) and Nicholas (1983). These are the only grandchildren of Vera Gregovic. I know this because I am Romulus Gregovic, grandson of Vera Gregovic. I do not know who Angela is or if she is a part of my extended family, but I do know that my deceased mother Floria was an only child due to a hysterectomy that my grandmother Vera Gregovic had in approximately 1954, and that there are no other siblings for Floria Gregovic. The only decendents are Nicholas, Vera, and myself, Romulus. Angela Gregovic is not the granddaughter of Serbian actress Vera Gregovic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gregovic79 (talkcontribs) 08:56, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have deleted the information: that is fine: anybody may delete unreferenced information from Wikipedia pages. Wikipedia Language in Coded Messages

A million thanks to Mdann52 for a excellent job of removing my present name from Google searches. Now, when they hit on my present name, they just get a "run-around." Thanks again! Franklin Paladin (talk) 09:57, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Question. I have tried several times to do the same for my former name. All to no avail. The unfinished Biography had been ripped out of my personal Sandbox and with great clumsiness displayed in a truncated form - three pages were missing at the end. As of today the unwanted "hit" for Google is still there:

QUOTE User:FRANKLIN PANGBORN/BIOGRAPHY - WikiPedia Mobile by ... wiki.verkata.com/.../BIOGRAPHY_-_PETER_WILLIAM_RAINIERCached You + 1'd this publicly. Undo User: User:FRANKLIN PANGBORN/BIOGRAPHY - PETER WILLIAM RAINIER .... Peter W, Rainier, who started writing while an emerald miner, continued this from his ... UNQUOTE.

What does this wikipedia coded message mean?: "You + 1'd this publicly. Undo User:" Sounds like someone in Wikipedia really tried to help, once ? How do I get this Biography back into my personal Sandbox and my former name reference erased from Google searches once and for all? Franklin Paladin (talk) 09:57, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The quoted Google result is from http://wiki.verkata.com/en/wiki/User:FRANKLIN_PANGBORN/BIOGRAPHY_-_PETER_WILLIAM_RAINIER. We don't control http://wiki.verkata.com. They scrape our pages but are not affiliated with us. Apparently they don't respect the noindex tag on Wikipedia pages. Google respects noindex so you don't see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:FRANKLIN_PANGBORN/BIOGRAPHY_-_PETER_WILLIAM_RAINIER in Google's search results. The correct noindex code for Wikipedia is __NOINDEX__ as displayed here and not as written in the source of this edit. Your code in [4] is incorrect but it doesn't matter in this case because __NOINDEX__ is already added by {{Userspace draft}}. If User:FRANKLIN PANGBORN/BIOGRAPHY - PETER WILLIAM RAINIER was deleted then maybe the copy would eventually disappear from Google's index. Would you like the page deleted? Can you confirm this by logging in as the page creator User:FRANKLIN PANGBORN and request deletion? This help desk is indexed by Google and will soon show up in Google searches on "FRANKLIN PANGBORN". Would you like that prevented by hiding all occurrences of the name in this discussion? Is there any way to see "Feedbacks linked" or "Related feedbacks" just like Special:RecentChangesLinked.

I just saw that my watchlist now contains an option named Feedback from my watched pages », just under the page title, to go to feedbacks of those articles. But I have moved many articles from my watchlist to a user-subpage so that I can use it as another watchlist through Special:RecentChangesLinked. What should I do to see the feedbacks on pages with links on a particular page (Analogous to Special:RecentChangesLinked). This would have been very helpful for WProjects as they could monitor the feedbacks and take immediate actions on articles. ···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 10:06, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's a really good suggestion :). I'm adding it to the to-do list, but I'm not sure when we'll be able to get to it (development on new features rather than on fixing bugs is ending soon). There is a feature that allows you to see feedback from pages you've watchlisted, if that's helpful? Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 16:39, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you!
If you are referring to Special:ArticleFeedbackv5Watchlist, then it wouldn't help me unless I put every article on a particular WProject to my watchlist. So each member of particular WProject must put every article on their watchlist in order to see feedbacks and take actions collaborately.
But, creating a special page for related feedbacks will not help all WProjects as this would require creation of a page that lists all the articles of the particular WProject. Hence, for helping all the WProjects we will have to create a tool similar to the external watchlist. But can such a tool be technically feasible for feedbacks? So a Special:RelatedFeedbacks page would be of great help. ···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 17:55, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    likeness law

In the U.S., for use in Wikipedia, what is the law (apart from copyright or trademark) on using an image of a living person who may be recognizable to a third party but who may not have consented to the use, including commercial use (Wikipedia or maybe Wikimedia requires that licensing not exclude commercial use), of their likeness, who may not be a public figure, where the image is to be used other than for an article about that person (it may be used in an article about an organization or a product), and where it may be possible for someone unknown to interpret the image and its context as an endorsement of the organization or product by person/s in the image?

Further, unless the law completely bars such use for a likeness of an adult anyway, is the law more restrictive where the person may be a minor or incompetent or may be under age 13 or as young as approximately age 4?

If news or some other noncommercial use is permissible, do all of the pages in Wikipedia qualify?

If personal consent or the consent of a parent, guardian, or custodian is required, how is consent to be established? For example, is it to be postally mailed to a Wikimedia Foundation office?

I don't know whether an image is made where privacy is expectable. I assume privacy is not of concern where consent exists, even if the consent is obtained after the image is made. But if consent is not required, where is privacy expectable (or, if easier to address, where is privacy not expectable)?

Can a caption solve the problems?

I previously discussed this at Wikimedia Commons. Because they address Commons, providing the image to Commons is not problematic and there's no issue with use until someone copies or links from Commons to elsewhere, so it was suggested that I ask where use is contemplated, which, in this case, is in English Wikipedia.

I'm inclined to caution in this matter, meaning I'd rather not use an image if it might violate the law, rather than go to the law's limit. But an image with people would be nice to use.

This looks burdensome and I wish it weren't. Perhaps I could use the reply to post guidance somewhere on a Wikipedia page, since something like it seems to be missing.

    Providing Sources

    Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Siebert Realty

    Good Afternoon,

I am trying to write an article about our company, Siebert Realty, that turns 50 this year. I have been with the company for 26 years, so I know alot about its history. I'm having trouble getting the article through because I don't have enough sources to backup what I've written. I have tweaked the article alot since I first posted it, trying to make it sound less like an advertisement... and more like a wiki page about the company.

I recently found a history book that a local writer put together about the Sandbridge area. We are briefly mentioned in, but not much. I plan to include that source as a footnote. Can you give me any other suggestions in how I can document my article. Is there a website that houses information that I can use (company registers, etc.) We're not a huge corporation, but we do have a big presence in our community.

Any help you can give me in getting my article published would be greatly appreciated.

I work for a government agency. The law was recently changed regarding the student services we provide. We need to edit the page.

I have been put in charge of editing our wikipedia page. Is there a way for government agencies which provide services (in this case student financial aid) to create an account to be able to edit pages immediately?

Who should we contact to verify our legitimacy and set this up? Everything in the FAQ seems to deal with private firms who may use the opportunity to advertise or shill. We provide financial aid, and have zero motivation for any of these things. Also, we would like our account name to reflect that edits are made by us, for credibilities sake. The ToS poo poos that. Is there an exception for government agencies?

    Thanks.

At Wikipedia, the credibility of information is not established by who edits it. Indeed, Wikipedia has a strong policy against editing under a conflict of interest, which is why we discourage people from having "official" accounts, and why we also discourage people from editing articles where they have an interest in promoting the entity described in the article. Information at Wikipedia is based on information which is published elsewhere in reliable sources, for something as simple as the services your organization provides, just leave a link to the source of the information. That is, if you have a press release announcing the changes, or a listing on your organization's website listing your services, that should suffice for the changes to the Wikipedia article. If you leave the information on the talk page of the article in question, it can be checked out and fixed. Does that help answer your questions? --Jayron32 16:27, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you can provide sources that prove that this is how the chain is generally known and referred to, then someone will move the page. Note that the official name of the company is not what is important here, but how it's known. BTW, the website appears to be unavailable ATM. The only other on-line source quoted in the article, the coloradosprings.com article, calls it just "Dion's". Rojomoke (talk) 16:48, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why you speak in the imperative. Wikipedia will not cease to exist if an article doesn't have a lead. However, as explained in several places in the MOS, it is expected that all articles have a lead section. If it disturbs you that an article doesn't have a lead section, you are allowed to make it better. --Jayron32 17:03, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There has never been an account called User:agenteames. The two articles were created in 2004 [5][6] by a user who was not logged in. That was possible in 2004 but not today. User:Mseames has edited both articles. Is that you? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:29, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is I ! You're a gem, thank you!! I've been trying for hours to find my account and log back in. That makes me so mad I was not logged in when I created those pages!! I also created the Eros Ramazzotti page and other pages. Probably wasn't logged in then, either! Mseames (talk) 23:54, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
