The 1971 CFL Draft consisted of nine rounds and 70 selections while the defending Grey Cup champion [[Montreal Alouettes]] did not have a selection until the end of the fourth round when they picked 36th overall. The selections primarily came from Canadian universities as this was before the time American collegians really integrated themselves into the CFL. Interestingly, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, despite being Western Conference finalists, still had the first overall selection, an event which would be impossible in the NFL as often teams who finish with winning records and make the playoffs do not draft so highly.
