He represented his native country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, where he lost in the second round of the men's lightweight division (– 60 kg) to Canada's Michael Strange.

Better known as Mikhail Kazaryan he represented the Soviet Union at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. There he was defeated in the third round of the men's featherweight division by Italy's eventual gold medalist Giovanni Parisi (RSC-2).
