Dirck Helmbreker, also known as Theodor Helmbreker, (1633–1696) was a Dutch Baroque painter and draughtsman who worked primarily in Rome.[1] His paintings belong to the group of artists known as the Bamboccianti, and, like other northern artists working in this style, he specialised in small-scale genre scenes in the manner of Pieter van Laer.[2] Born in Haarlem, Helmbreker arrived in Italy in the 1650s, eventually settling in Rome by the end of the decade.[1] His genre scenes, which were among the last generation of the Bamboccianti,[2] tended to be more classical in inspiration than many their earlier low-life scenes.[1] Ultimately, these works found great success with Italian collectors.[1] He died in Rome in 1696.
