The MSI Wind Notebook is a subnotebook / Netbook computer designed by Micro-Star International (MSI). Wind stands for “Wi-Fi Network Device.” It was first announced at CeBIT 2008,[1] and first listed for pre-orders on 9th May 2008.[2] There will be 8- and 10-inch versions supporting a relatively high resolution of 1024×600. Storage will be via a 80GB 2.5-inch hard drive; 1 GB of RAM will be standard. UK pricing is currently at £349 (USD$678) for the XP version and £319 (USD$620) for the Linux version[citation needed], which is on the low end of the initial estimate of between £299 to £699 when first announced.[3] In the United States, the SUSE Linux version will have a SRP of USD$399 and the Windows XP version will cost USD$499 (USD$479 with a 3-cell battery). Only the 10" LCD model will be available in the US.

There are 4 known OEM versions of the Wind.

All OEM versions are offered in some different colors than the original MSI Wind exception made to Tsunami Moover.

It will feature one of the new Intel Atom 45-nm processors running at 1.6 GHz.(1.9 GHz with AC & TurboDrive enabled)[5] Also featured is Bluetooth, WLAN and a 1.3MP camera. The Wind PC is MSI's response to the successful ASUS Eee PC.

Availability

The MSI Wind was originally scheduled to ship June 27, 2008 in the U.S. Pre-orders on the MSI website were taken on June 16, 2008 for the 3-cell version with XP installed. A version with the 6-cell battery has been pushed back to September.[6][7]

On June 27th, the release of the 10-inch MSI Wind was hit with another delay. Due to an "industry wide battery shortage," MSI included free overnight delivery with the new July 7th ship date to those who pre-ordered.[8]

On July 17th MSI informed all retailers that the estimated date for shipment is the 23rd of July.

On July 23rd MSI stated that all Master Importer units have been delayed util the 28th of July, 2008 which affects all retailers in the U.S.

On July 28th, most retailers will be receiving shipments by August 4th. Most large retailers, however, have warehouses reporting thousands of back orders which could mean that many consumers may not get their hands on one until September or October 2008.

Future models

MSI plans to release an 8.9" version, but not for the US/EU market..[12] MSI also is currently working on a new UMPC that is smaller and thinner than the current version. MSI stated that the next Wind will have similar components (including the Intel Atom processor), but it will be aimed at business people. The new generation Wind is expected to be on sale in Q1 of 2009. The exact price is unknown.[13]

A desktop Wind PC (Nettop) is also in development.[14][15][16]
