It is one of only two Pokémon (the other being Sableye) that is Ghost and Dark-type, a combination that gives it no natural weaknesses and immunity to three different types. However, unlike Sableye, Spiritomb's defensive stats are above average which makes it an incredibly powerful tank in the metagame.

Spiritomb (ミカルゲ, Mikaruge in original Japanese language versions) is one of the Template:Pokenum fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Spiritomb in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Spiritomb first appeared in the Nintendo DS games, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The name Spiritomb is derived from the words spirit and tomb. Spiritomb's Japanese name, Mikaruge, may come from the Japanese words for: jar or urn (, mika), referring to its existence as a container of souls; and pumice (軽石, karuishi), referring to its base, the Keystone.

Biological characteristics

Spiritomb resembles a purple swirling vortex with several swirling green lights inside its face which hold a resemblence to will-o-wisps. Additionally, in Pokémon Battle Revolution, Spiritomb often makes movements as if it were trying to escape from its stone base, in reference to the souls that are contained in the Keystone. While making these movements, Spiritomb also appears to have a thin "neck" attached to the Keystone.

Spiritomb is an entity comprised of 108 spirits which were sealed away within the cracks of the Keystone for evil deeds done 500 years in the past.

This Pokémon has an unusual connection with the number 108. It is number 108 in the Sinnoh Pokédex, is 108 kilograms in weight, has base stat values of 108 for both defensive stats, if you subtract the first two numbers in the numbers of steps you need to take for a Spritomb egg to hatch, you get the value 108, if you multiply the numbers 3 and 2 (the number of people you must speak with in The Underground to get a Spiritomb) repeatedly (3x2x3x2x3) you will arrive at 108, and exists as the aforementioned collection of 108 sinful spirits. This is an allusion to a Buddhist practice performed on New Year's Eve in Japan, in which a bell is rung 108 times to chase away the 108 temptations to overcome in order to achieve nirvana.

In the video games

Spiritomb can only be captured after placing an Odd Keystone in the Hallowed Tower on Route 209 and speaking to 32 people (or one person 32 times, re-entering each time) in the wireless multiplayer underground mode. Talking to the underground Hikers does not count.
